Heaps of info on here so have a good search. I use Castrol GPS motorcycle oil. Some guys use car oil, but for piece of mind and very little extra cost go with motorbike oil and you can't go wrong. Hard to find anywhere else but bike shops. Not something you buy from Repco etc.

I use 5w/50w Mobil 1 fully synthetic in the r6...according to what Ive read you just gotta use oil that doesnt have EC written anywhere on it as it "may" cause clutch slippage....its a 50/60% call i reckon on wether you use motorbike specific or not, IMO

You would be better off using Mobil 1 4T Racing as it's specifically for bikes and has the component removed of the Mobil 1 car additive package which can cause clutch slip, especially in wet clutch applications.

I used to use it but found out that Honda actually recommends semi-synthetic so changed to Motul 5100 for peace of mind about 3 years ago.

Just put in what your owner's maunual recommends. FWIW I use 10W/40 Q8 semi synth.

What sort of oil does Buell recommend for the big compressor?

This is what i use (because the Triumph warranty states you must use it).

You can get that oil from Supercheap. I'm using Motul 5100 and it's all good by me.

Any full synthetic will do fine, as it doesn't have the additives that a semi synthetic has that break down. You could in theory go to extended oil changes with this stuff.

Any semi synthetic motorbike oil will be ok. This is just dinosaur base oil with an additive package. The additive package is what breaks down, but it is adjusted for motorcycles. Change when recommended in manual.

Most diesel oil will be ok, again a semi synthetic but it has a similar additive package to the semi motorcycle oils.

Not so good are car semi synthetic oils as the additive package breaks down and some (very few) contain shit that could damage your clutch.

Single weight dinosaur oils would be fine too as they have none of the additive which breaks down.

Personally I would stick to a viscosity as recommended by your bike manufacturer, this will usually give the best mix of cold start protection, fuel consumption, power output, wear protection, clutch performance and gear changes. If you do elect to use a different weight oil, one or more of these factors will suffer.

Motul 5100 10/40w semi synthetic on all my Honda bikes. No problems at all change oil every 3500km's or half a year.

It's kind of pointless worrying what oil you are using when changing that frequently, you could run any oil you like.

Yep, I use Delo 400 FWIW. Cheapish and seems to last longer than normal motorcycle oil before turning completely gungy and black (oil changes every 2000kms, but engine design has no oil filter, just a sludge trap behind the crankcase).

Hahaha, after seeing Kim's bike's, I think anybody should be very happy to buy one of his old ones

I usually change it more frequent after buying a new (secondhand) bike just to make sure I flush all the crap out.....just a peace of mind. I find I get smoother gear changes after each oil change but that might just be me. I use Motul 5100 cos I get it cheap.

Wasnt there a tread not too long ago on how new bikes had to use mineral oils for first 6000km or 3000km only after that to be changed to a semi or full syn. oil??

Couldn't find it, but I remember that it wasn't as important as getting old oil out of bike in that first 1000km. Said to do it a few times before 1000km even in the first 100km or so, heap of crap that needs to be removed.

I used Castrol mineral activ 4 or something bike shop had in it for first 300km and then replaced it with Castrol GPS semi syn till 1000km and replaced it again with the same.

It was an opinion, not a requirement.

The Triumph used Mobil 1 racing 4t from day one (as recommended by Triumph).

Conventional wisdom says you should use a mineral oil on new engines as the anti-friction properties are less than with semi or fully synthetic. This means that the bedding in process isn't protracted and you don't glaze the bores. However, with modern coated bores and high precision machining tolerances, you have to wonder whether it's less relevant now.

Incidentally, our company tested Mobil 1 on our vehicle fleet when it was first being developed. Spectographic analysis showed that wear debris in the oil was about 3 times less than with the Mobil multigrade used at that time. That's not the whole story of course, frequency of change and price also have to be factored in.

I run Motul 5100, 10W 40.

My engine has down a good 94,000 km and it's still beating... *phew*

I know the guy at the local motorcycle garage who stocks it in bulk so you can get good
4-5L for $36.00, instead of paying $55.00 retail. But you gotta supply your own container.

PM me if you want some.....

*yay for KB*

When I first changed the oil on the GN I used a 10w 40 mineral oil.

I noticed the gear shift was kinda stiff when cold.
Sometimes on real cold days it was hard to select first until the bike had been running 3-4 minutes.

I changed to Motul 5100 10w 40 and the gear shift feel improved greatly.
I also noticed a fuel economy improvement.

I've always run full synthetic in my cars in the crankcase, gearbox and diff.
Might cost a little extra but seems to me to be worth it for the added protection.

There is a heap of good info in the maintainence section at the mo. i just stated a thread asking for oil advice for my bike, and Motul 5100 is probably the way I am going to go.

Was browsing in Supercheap today and considering what i've been reading on here it sounds like (as i've pretty much always felt anyway) full synthetics are the shizzle and I thought of getting some Castrol R4 Superbike oil.....:sweatdrop $95!!!! for 4 litres!!!! sheesh, at that rate you'd wanna leave it in for 10,000k. If I did'nt already have a new bottle of Motul 5100 at home I would have given it a try though I think. Is anyone running this oil at the moment? If so what are your thoughts?

Fully-synthetic oil, like AMSOIL, lubricates better and better the hotter it gets, while semi-synth and mineral oil gets progressively less useful at high temps and max power tails off. That's why it all fully-synth for highly-tuned racing bikes, especially for those long endurance races like Le Mans and Daytona.
