Heard this on the wireless last night and wet myself. cops and labour are claiming the increase in violent crime is a good thing because it means more people are reporting it rather than it's increasing.
i'm sure if it was down they would have patted themselves on the back and said they'd made the country safer. oh look they do:
"But then they say "There has been an actual reduction in recorded offences in seven of the 12 police districts, and police staff serving in those districts will feel specially proud of what they have achieved." "
:lol:

The increase is in reported family violence.
It's the following trend of Kiwi's to DIY.

Typical response from Labour. It's irrelevant what they'd say if crime stats did in fact go down because the way our country's being run that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

Fucking gummint spin doctors - will happily twist the figures to show themselves in the best light.
As far as "more is being reported goes" - suuuuuuure, that's why the street where I work has more gangs of youths with too much spare time and aggro attitude than there ever was before. That's why the cops have to have a permanent presence in our street now and I've seen violent incidents outside my work when I never used to.
Anyone wants to drag our political arsewipes from their ivory tower and tie them to a lamp post in Otara at midnight has my unconditional support - I'm sure they would see that there's a lot more to "report" these days.

Overall crime stats mean little for three reasons.
1. They treat every crime as equivalent - a murder the same as someone possessing cannabis
2. A small change in a very frequent crime can mask larger changes in less frequent and more serious crimes
3. Certain crime stats can go up or down in relation to how much effort the Police put into that area.
The stats to 30 June 2007 have violent crime up 4.4% and sexual crimes up 4.6%. This is not good news but understandable under a Labour Government. The Police Commissioner’s Office should focus more on reducing the crime rate rather than spinning more crime as good news.
The spin is that the increase in violent crimes come from more work on domestic violence. Well domestic violence tends to be minor assaults, so how did assaults increase in the last year:
* Minor assaults up 2.2%
* Serious assaults up 4.8%
* Grievous assaults up 10.0%
Speaks for itself.

How do they know that it is because more people are reporting it?
Do they keep stats on who did and didn't report it in the past?
Do they ask everyone who reports a crime if they would have previously?

Because that was Annette kings answer on the TV1 news last night when Jon Key said crime had actually gone up 30% in Labours 8 years of office.

Does the 30% include all the criminal activity by Labour?

Yeah, that's a whopping 100% increase on previous year.
And the stats for dog owners breaching licence conditions is staggering...

Exacterly.................this is a serious crime.........the advantage of wheelchairs are that they are not registered so easy for thieves to sell on the Blackmarket without raising suspicion.....and the great thing is that if caught in the act the owner cannot chase them

wouldnt hospital statistics be a better way to see if the percentage of crimes being reported matches the percentage of crimes being reported?
if hospitals are also reporting an increase in people coming after being beaten it kind of kills the cops idea that more crime is good

Yeah, but if the cops are doing the beating they can get their clearance rates up, increase rates of incidents, can apply for more funding.

As long as it's ok for lower socio economic citizens to sit down with a crate and get paraletic whilst watching 'thugby', then this country will always breed domestic violence like it's going out of fashion. Garbage in, garbage out...

I suspect that the reporting rates are constant or declining and crime is going up, but that doesnt fit with the helengrad master plan. Nearly everybody I know has had their car stolen or broken into and didnt report it. I reported it the first time, and then saw what a complete waste of effort and time it was so didnt bother in the future.. LOOK, The policy is working!!! Dont follow up on these violating simple crimes and less get reported!!! were doing good!!!

Thanks to a Labour government more people in the lower socio-economic groups are now able to afford a phone to report domestic violence crimes.
Surely that's a good thing?

Surely that's a bad thing?

What we clearly need is an improvement in the reporting of unreported crime. It's that figure that's causing the headaches and now the Govt has a handle on it they should simply declare what that number is, let us get an absolute measure on the crime and we can take it from there.
If Mizz King is able to confirm the level of crime reporting has increased... it implies they know how much by, and they therefore know the unknowable.
Which just proves why Labour keep getting into power - they're magic! Helen's speeding problems go away, they know the unknowable, art forgeries aren't an issue... it's just nirvana!
I love New Zealand. Now if only my taxes weren't so high, the PC bullshit was done away with, crime was lower, we had more police, less spent on crims and dole bludgers, the foreshore belonged to everyone, and I wasn't held accountable for the alleged sins of my forefathers. I think it'd be ideal.

Hamiltons in for real trouble judging by the number of blue bandana wearing youth I spotted, when I was riding through at 2pm a few weeks ago.
Was school time and it wasn't the holidays. Must of been 15-20 of them giving their hand signals to the traffic near Melville. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/sauer/angry-smiley-011.gif

Let me guess - the amount of booze was entirely acceptable, but the number of yoofs was grossly underreported so all the destruction, drunkenness and staggering about was just the physical manifestation of a statistical anomaly?

Well - in good old Wellington WE know who is REALLY to blame for the increase in crime stats.... US, the public!!! Its all our fault - naturally - apparently we are stupid.....
From TV3's web page...
Wellington's top cop believes people leaving valuables in their car is the major factor in the region having the highest increase in recorded crime.
General crime statistics released yesterday show recorded crime rose 6.9 percent in Wellington to more than 45,000 incidents in the year to June.
Wellington Police District Commander Superintendent Pieri Munro says violent offences were up but credits that with the city's crack down on domestic violence.
He says dishonesty offences were also up but says that is because people are not using their brains.

Well that changes my estimation of police intelligence.
Other breaking news - police say if people weren't there they wouldn't be assaulted!

Hamilton police yesterday attacked people's apathy towards protecting their own homes in the face of the city's continuing burglary problem.
[QUOTE]"Only last week, we warned of the dangers of leaving curtains open. QUOTE]

You must feel silly for not only owning nice stuff - but for leaving your curtains open too!

So it's all our fault that we're being attacked and burgled and that the reported crime rate is so high. We should all feel ashamed of ourselves for owning nice things and leaving the curtains open to force the poor unfortunates to steal from us or invade our homes. We should feel ashamed that we go places where we force people to attack us and we should be ashamed that we report these crimes and artificially create the impression that the crime rate is higher than it has ever been.
