View Full Version : Is it JUST me, or is BroTown seriously pathetic?

I can't believe that someone gave the go-ahead on this
steaming pile of elephant reflux
Practically all the dialogue on BroTown is a poorly thought out rip off of the comedy people like Billy T James came up with YEARS ago...
Maybe it's just me, but I think some things make it on air, in the name of being PC.

I'm starting a petition to replace BroTown with Broken Towers, a brilliant new series I have thought up, all by myself. It will center around a motel, where a highly strung, bumbling manager will have to contend with his condescending wife, inept and foreign bellboy and hosts of peculiar guests. I'm thinking it could be set somewhere in the UK. I'm even thinking of making some delightfully clever play on the name of each episode, just juggling the letters of Broken, to form funny alternatives. What do you guys think? <_<

It’s a cartoon comedy, please don’t dissect it. It’s not a science project

Well, yeah, no point dissecting it, per se. But the damn thing isn't even bloody funny. It's pathetic. The jokes are obvious and sad. The stereotypes are overworked.

All it had to do to succeed was be as funny as the Simpsons was, several years ago, but they couldn't even manage *that*.

If this 'comedy' does meet with general approval, that says more about the low level of mental processing ability in the New Zealand populace than I feel comfortable saying myself, frankly.

Watching bro'Town makes me embarrassed for whomever's responsible. Didn't they cringe as they laid down that script?

I know that, and I realise it's just my view, so thats why I just change channels. Just thought I'd share what I was thinking.
But, I still think tv, even cartoon comedies, should have some level of intellect. Heaven forbid some of it should rub off on the masses watching it

Look at cartoons like South Park and even more so King of the Hill and Family guy, so many levels of comedy / innuendos you actually have to think while you watch. And, they are somewhat original.

Pah! All my mates and I think BroTown is hilarious :2thumbsup
And to combat your petition I've requested they all write in saying what a great show it is :moon:

Thanks for reminding me it was on tonight.
Oh and it's only a 6 episode series so it'll all be over soon.

And also, talking about British comedy. Did anyone catch Little Brittain on Prime last night? Great stuff!

It's pretty lame...

But...

In it's defense...

It's better than the current crop of local reality shows (how did they get that name?)

It's why I read or listen to music.

I agree, but it's a bloody good effort. Concidering it is NZ first attempt at having a cartoon comedy show.

Southpark, Hummmm? I can be funny. But most of the time it's boring.
As for Family Guy...That is SO funny :D I can't beileve they stopped making it. And Futurama, also a damn good show to watch.

But we know that you have a dry sense of humor. Like Sierra desert has more moisture than you do.

Yes, have to agree about the reality shows. When they first started, I watched the American Idol type program, and admittedly enjoyed it. I haven't watched the current series, probably because they take quite an investment of time, and they have a new series every couple of months.

I haven't watched Celebrity somebody, Country nobody (name?) once, and thats coming from someone who watches just about everything. Living the dream was watchable, since it was the first application I've seen, of a unique idea. No doubt there will be more, which I won't watch.

I am watching My big fat obnoxious fiancee, that I find rather amusing. Ofcourse, I'm only watching this first series/type of program, none of the numerous I expect to follow. I guess it's the age old "things get old, fast" factor.

Family Guy = THE BEST!

I have all of the DVD's from my American cousin, and I love them! I even heard that they are making more episodes currently!

The sheer brilliance of it is mind boggling

As for Family Guy...That is SO funny
Glad we agree :D Did you by anychance see the episode where Peter thinks he's black, and gets pulled over by a cop, who then does a routine that has to be in my top 10 funniest moments, ever. (...subject is being beligerant.....officer down.)

Others, the "and then" gag from Dude, Where's my car? And, one or two gag's from SuperTroopers. Ok, really silly movies, but they just cracked me up :D

Oh yeah, as you say, Futurama is damn good aswell!

And where Peter thinks that he is a woman, and then he addresses the black men at the Million Man March, and says that they are responsible for the downfall of society, and they are lazy etc etc, thinking he was talking about MEN in general! :)

And where Stewie has his "sexy parties", I love that bit...

So many good memories

Yeah its not everyones cup of tea but it cracks me up and is the only TV program I make a point of watching these days. It has a pretty small target audience (i.e. young urban polynesians) so understandably aint going to tickle some people but I also like it for the cameos and some major laughs for sport fans too (Tua's "Did I do da damage??" and great to see George Nepia get some respect!).

It also makes an attempt to address social issues like low income families, alcohol abuse, racism, gays etc. I guess some people don't like to see that side of our society on TV getting so much attention and rather it be kept out of the limelight.

Yes, and no. It is always good to get that side of society out in the open, alot of people, me for example, know it's there but simply forget it during the daily goings on of life. But, it would send a much more powerful message, if it was made available (through interest) to more people.

It has got a very small target audience I suppose, so why then is it screened in a prime slot? Surely putting something enjoyed by a greater margin of people on at that time would make sense? You could move BroTown to an earlier slot, or later I guess (due to the content, as per their warning) and replace one of the repeats tv3 show?

I still think it is forced on us, in a prime slot, simply because it is NZ made. I'm all for NZ made programs (anything for that matter) don't get me wrong. Kia Kaha :)

Top three TV comedy series of all time, in order:

Futurama
The Simpsons
Monty Python (I think that counts)

Everything's getting so political lately though!

The only programme I MUST see is 6ft Under.

I don't watch programs like that,but I saw a little of it tonight,and um...no thanks.

I had the TV on to watch Seven Wonders of the Industrial World - what a great series that has been,I've enjoyed everyone - sorry, but no one was murdered in gory detail,no one fucked on screen or shouted fuck, fuck, fuck you silly cunt really loud so the kids could hear, there wasn't even a car chase - but call me a retard,I really enjoyed them all.Actualy I kinda liked picking holes in the reproduction of history - like tonight they were puttering on the river in 1930 with a little Suzuki outboard on the boat, the bulldozers were a bit too modern with hydraulics and stuff, but that's nitpicking....I wait all year for a handfull of programs like that which never even rate, yet all stations are chock full of shit I'd never watch if you paid me....well,show me the colour of your money eh?

Whatever their logic was it seems to be justified because the show is a hit as far as ratings are concerned. Every NZ forum I visit seems to have a BroTown thread and they're all very similar with one side who hate it and another that love it. I guess the big selling point is how much of the show you can relate to. Being a Maori who grew up in the melting pot of Auckland and also an avid sports fan I get all the jokes from the drunk dad bringing home fish'n'chip to the pressures of church and sports acheivements so its a great laugh for me.

Its basically like one of those "you had to have been there" kind of jokes. If you weren't then it aint funny at all and kind of annoying.

Heh, I thought when peter died and he nicked his own wallet was pretty funny.
Or the time they had Peter's boss over for tea, and Brain choaks on that bun, and they do the hinmlick (?) and it ends up going into the bosses throat and he dies. Then 'death dog' turns up for brian....etc soooo funny.

But I think I do remember watching that episode.

:niceone: Hey Stoney can I play the part of the BellHop? Maybe we can call him something like um.... Manuel, complete with Espanol accent and everything and has quite a clumsy overture. I know I'll have to lose about 15kg off my ass but when it comes to fuckups you can't go past me. :2thumbsup

Yeah Ive seen most of those aswell. Definately emphasises the fact how easy we have it these days. Although I thought the 103 man death toll on the hoover dam was pretty good. Considering the death toll for the railway across the states was in the thousands I think.

Watched bro town the first time and pissed myself laughing for most of it. Last nite I didn't even laugh once. They have fairly quickly run out of ideas, oh well, onto the next thing i guess.

Yeah you're right. I like the lighthouse one.....and sewer system in London was pretty interesting too. Panama canal too. Makes you wonder if anyone would have the balls to take on an equivalent project like those were in today's terms. or a car tunnel across the Atlantic.... Seems everything is too expensive now days.

Think you must have seen some of the extreme engineering docos on discovery. They did one on building a tunnel from new york to england. Would get you there in 2 hours or so i think. Was pretty cool, used trains that levetate on electromagnetic tracks that run in a vacuum.

The hong kong airport would be one of the biggest recent engineering feats. That was imo alot bigger and complicated than the hoover dam (although with alot more sophisticated technology). Quite alot of decent "dreaming" engineering tasks are in the extreme engineering series.
