Folks I can offer advice about the best leather suit for road riding but when it comes tooff road Im a newbee.
I've lucked in ( I think) with a set of MX pants and my Tpro chest/back protector. I'm wearing my Sidi race boots which have a fair bit of armour.
Lid wise Im wearing a New HJC trail helmet and im wearing a lightweigh pair of leather race gloves.
Am I on the right track or headed for disaster?
Is there other gear I should wear?
All or any advice gratefully recieved

you sound like your on the right track for basic gear,
how much ankle rigidity do your boots offer?

there's more gear that id suggest getting, a kidney belt is a good idea, some sort of knee protection, either knee pads/guards, or a full knee brace (broken knees suck!) see how you go with the gloves, but you may find you want to upgrade to something thicker once your hands have worn a few rocks and branches. have you got goggles? if not total motocross sells Smith goggles with rolloffs for $100 which i think is a good price.

it all comes down to your budget and how far you want to go with it (like most things)

someone else may want to add to this.

You need knee protectors. PM me, I've got some MX gear I don't use anymore.

Jeepers mate you know what they say "Big feet Big ???"

I'm a size 9 as well lol

Frosty you might want to keep an eye out on Tme or somewhere. I use Azonic armour. Has all the protection, albows, Back, roost, shoulders and a kidney belt incorporated. By the time you buy a roost vest, albow pads and belt you are there anyway. Got mine on t/me for less than $150-00. Trick is to look in the bicycle section as well as MX.

Helmet (you already have)
Boots that offer good ankle support( already mentioned)
Goggles ( absolute must have )
Armour only really protects from roost a must if you ride on dirt or get behind a four stroke.
Elbow, knee guards I never wear them but it makes good sense.

Boot sizing varies between manufacturer, Gaerne always run a bit large, Sidi are bang on, Fox always seem a bit on the small side.

Get some full length motox boots - you need your shins protected. Get some knee guards or braces as others have suggested. Body armor is also good. Instead of just a roost protector, go for a body suit style.

Couldn't agree more. Mine has some healthy scars on it which would have made some awful grooves in my body had I not been wearing it (what happens when you get out of sequence on a set of high speed whoops at Woodhill.....).
You can borrow mine if ya want Frosty, I have no dirt bike and there isn't one on the horizon at the moment (Mrs Trumpy wants a new bathroom and the consequences of not supplying said bathroom are too awful to contemplate...). If you want it I can bring it it up with me next week.

I'm a big fan of the pressure suit (or precious suit as some call them) bit pricey but they have all in one.

anyway if you want a kidney belt I got one you can have for $30. I paid $70 for it.

Road boots aren't anywhere near as good as proper off road boots, they should be the first thing you get

Sounds like you got some good offers. Personally as mentioned by some previously I would go for a pressure suit.

I have a EVS suit it has elbow, shoulder, back and chest protection as well as built in kidney belt thats held together with big velcro pads. Bloody good at keeping your stomach in place if your a fat bastard like me:rolleyes: it has saved me from big bruises on few rides where trees/branches wanted to get the better of me. Its also relatively easy to put on and get off. Only problem is you can get a bit hot and sweaty. The cons are: you need to wear a t shirt underneath else the fabric plays hell with your nipples:crazy::eek5: Some may find this enjoyable but I didn't:doctor:
There a bit pricey new $280ish all the local bike shops seem to have them, cyclespot, botany honda ,colemans etc. I have seen the occasional one on trademe. Reckless is right t/me is the best place to look.

Knee pads are a good idea too. I think BOOOM or cheese had a good cheap source for these about $30.00 if i remember right. but can't remember where they said he got them. Get the articulated ones the straight ones are shit ( even for kids)

I see you must have had fun with the kids at the sandpit then good on ya. probably bump into you up there with my mob sometime.

Try on a pressure suit before you buy one. I brought one and hated it so i think there a personal preferance. As for your knees i wouldnt ride with out knee braces it doesnt matter how good or bad a rider you are it really hurts when you blow a knee out and theres time off work involved too! EVS do a good resonably priced knee brace called the EVS Vision i have had mine for over a year after a crappy knee injury and havnt looked back.

With pressure suits, I think the EVS is the best one. My one rips up. I tried one that you put on like a t-shirt, but it was horrible. It fitted badly and felt uncomfortable. My EVS one rips up like a jacket.

I'm backing the thor pressure suit, fits better and has better back protection, I had the evs previously, had a big off and smashed ribs, you could just about line up the edge of the solid back plate on the evs with the fractures, the thor has a nice big soft back section with a spine protector.

The only thing I didn't like about the suits is the fact they zip up the middle, that's where you get hamered the most.

I've got the O'Neal underdog armour. I've never had a problem with it, fallen a few times and it didn't even hurt (except for my legs which are not protected). Cost $199 new from trademe.

Goggles and safety glasses.
Glasses great for slower cruising in good conditions.
Bung them in your pocket/bumbag and use the goggles for the rest.

Goggles all the way, when you ride on dirt or clay you'll see why.

Hey Frosty I just bought a shirt $20 bucks and matching pants $69 bucks.

Trade me. Cycletreds bargain stuff. They damn well ripped me $8-00 bucks for the courier (my Fastcourier tickets are $2-95) and when I complained they professed to doing me a favour by combinning the freight on the 3 items and not charging me seperate freight on each item and I bought BUY NOW!

oh well so much for happy customers, NOT!

But there is a few more shirts and stuff for similar prices if you are interested.
