Alright, so my flight arrives at 8am on Friday 2nd of November, and i'm yet to book my flight to hop across to Blenheim on the same day. Just wondering what trouble there is to get up to in Wellington City for a person with no transport other than walking or public services.

I'm going to check-in for my outgoing flight first thing so I won't be lugging my pack around.

What would you do given 8-10 hours of free time?

Get a bus in to the city and back. There is HEAPS to do in Wellington. I reckon if you can't find anything to do in Wellington, day or night, you're not consuming oxygen. Gassit Girl and myself try to spend a few days there once a year or so

So you are suggesting that he needs to take a box of matches?

Walking from the airport to the city only takes 30-40 mins. Good exercise as well, for where you're going!
Has anyone mentioned a visit to Te Papa yet?

I think to be Politically Correct and all you should really use weapons that the Maori activists would use.... and Molotov cocktails would make a much more impressive sight!

I thought that Te Papa was rubbish.

Gareth - in Wellington buses and trains can take you virtually anywhere you wanna go...unlike the joke that is public transport here in Auckland... you will be able to get around fine.

You could kick around in the city for a while...can't remember too much else. It has been a long time since I was in Wellington...

Hey, um, you should go visit Te Papa.
They have the Britten bike, and a whole whale skeleton, and Phar Lap's bones, and other stuff. You could take a bus.

Talk to our colourful homeless people. Crab Crawler, Blanket Man, Glue Sniffing Stubby, Shouty Maori lady, Tinny Tyke - all hilarious and easily evaded if things turn nasty.

Now that brings back memories of good old Wellington 'Culture'!! I don't see any homeless people in Auckland CBD... its so crowded with 5 foot tall asians you can't see shit.

I did a (free) tour of Parliament Buildings last time I was in Wellington - it was actually really interesting.
Otherwise, take the cablecar up to Botanic Gardens if it's a nice day because the view is fab.
There is also a horse and a bike and other things at Te Papa, apparently.

There are so many things to do in Wellington; I grew up there and it's full of interesting nooks and crannies. Take the shuttle to Courtnay Place and beat the feet, you're sure to find something/somewhere of interest in fairly short order. (There's a great sushi train about halfway down on the right.) Pidgeon Park at lunchtime is usually loaded with lovelies.... Chuck a rock at a policeman and see the inside of Wellington Central, that's always a laugh. (Bad breakfasts though, cold eggs, yick.)

On foot from Courtnay Place head to Cuba Street, up to Vivian Street (the K' Road of the capital) and down Willis Street to Lambton Quay and maybe around the wharves. Te Papa (Their Place) can be done on a skateboard in fifteen minutes, it's a crock of over-hyped shite IMHO but it's a national icon, as is Parliament, make of them what you will but I'd skip them both if I were you.

If you get on the cable car make sure your life insurance is paid up; I know the people who service it. Good views from up there though and also Mount Victoria but public transport up there might be tedious, it's been a while. (Many a child has been conceived on that hill.)

Wellington is so much more than cheesy tourist attractions; get off the beaten track and meet the locals, they're great people and they are the only thing I miss about the place.

I would have said Te Papa as well but everyone else has!
Could always go to the reading cinemas and watch a movie with a glass of wine and sit on a lazy boy? or go to the embassy theatre where they showed Lord of the Rings that first time...
or ride one of those crocodile bikes along the water front
Or go up the road a bit and do the fly by wire thing... that sounds like something you would be in to

How about organising a Friday lunch for the Welly kiwiBikers? I'll meet up with ya for a brewski. I'm sure there will be other takers.

Otherwise, I'm right near Wellington MC so if you can hook up a demo, lets go for a ride round the bays!
