Saw it. I know and like Jim Boyd, but I think he's losing it. Prosecuting fishermen? Does he realise how many Kiwi's fish?
If, by some paricular form of lunacy, he won. Just imagine what that means for an island nation, one with a large fishing industry.
He should concentrate on bringing to justice people who wring magpies necks.

I don't think I agree with you there, I reckon all living things experience pain, however, possibly not as we know it. They even suggested at one time, that trees feel their own variation on pain when they get cut down. I truly think it will be a long, long time (if ever), before we'll know for sure.

And I'm without doubt that they are suffering, you can see that just by watching. But, I don't really have a strong view either way for fishing, I've even tried it myself but I am too impatient, and never catch anything (oh, I get violently seasick, another small problem). Thinking about it now, I don't really have a problem with fishing, since I doubt any fisherman reels in a fish, thinks "nah, this one hasn't suffered enough" and lets the line out to reel it back in again. I can definitely see the attraction of catching a Marlin, but, I've heard it can take numerous hours (6 or 7) to reel in some of them. So I guess you can argue both sides ad nauseum.

I eat meat, fish, and even walk on grass.

there is the point of a fish having a very short memory span. So pain now forget later. But i mean seriously there are endangered species but most of the fish types being caught are a dime a dozen. I dunno i find the whole issue silly. Then again those who harm the fish and then let them go are just dickheads. If the fish is damaged then put it out of it's misery and have yourself a nice dinner. If not tag and release.

The funny thing about the people who go on about this sort of cruelty to animals Is that they are most probably hurting a lot more plants/animals than what the fishermen are doing.

Have a look at this

And have a look at an email response in relation to this (or a similar article)

It’s taking the piss, but raises a good point.

I don't think yank burly would attract many fish, it would be like using a cheese burger for bait.

I personally envisage it read in a style akin to Eric Idle's declamation of the poet Ewan McTeagle's masterpiece, 'Can I have fifty pounds to mend the shed'.

Oh jeez, thanks for the memories - I don't know if he's still around, last time I saw him he was living on Waiheke when I was there - he had an old Valiant he grafted some huge fins on,a heap of shit, still had his tight jeans and he talked so loud in that special Sam Hunt cadence that you had plenty of time to avoid him.He was on stage at Nambasa,for,um...37hrs straight, well,it seemed like that, just on and on and on and on about ''this is one I wrote...'' even further back he used to haunt the same West Auckland vineyards we did,in an old International ambulance. Can't stand the man...I'd guess I'm not alone with that....

They're fish. They smell bad, they taste worse, and they have horrible sharp bits that always end up giving you a nice infected cut on some place that's impossible to apply a dressing.

I reckon we should stop pissing about and start poisoning the sea PROPERLY. None of this run-off crap, just set up factories on the coast that spew toxic waste directly into the sea.

That'll learn the buggers.

And get rid of those bloody cute sea mammals (whales, seals, dolphins) that everyone reckons are cute, but I reckon are just biding their time for just the right moment to take over the world.

Get them before it's too late.

And what's up with crabs? Walk properly ya daft buggers!

I half agree and half not agree with the article.

As far as I am concerned hunting, fishing etc should be fine so long as you aint tormenting the animal - because the latter isnt sport its sadism.

For example, fox hunting would be ok if there were lots of foxes and you went out and shot them with a rifle - like rabbit hunting. But making it run in fear of its life for hours on end and then getting a bunch of dogs to tear it apart is just plain sadistic and cruel.

Same with fishing. Use a heavy duty line, catch the marlin, real it in quickly and put it in the freezer, no problems with that - but using a light line and making it swim around til it tires it self out (for plain sport) is cruel and sadistic. Doesnt matter if the animal can feel anything or not - tormenting something in my book is just plain wrong.

I think thats the point they were trying to make, there is a different between doing something for sport and doing something just to take pleasure in being cruel.

A Northland SPCA inspector says he is prepared to prosecute gamefishers for animal cruelty on the grounds that fish have feelings.

Bay of Islands inspector Jim Boyd wants gamefishing to stop, claiming fish can feel pain and that fishing causes them "severe distress".

He warned gamefishers they could face fines of up to $125,000 and/or six months in jail

what the f#@k

Said inspector may have bitten off more than he can chew. I hope he devotes an appropriate amount of time to commercial fishers who snare albatrosses on long lines, or dolphins & seals in their nets.

Well, probably, but who, apart from Mr Boyd, gives a toss what a fish feels?

I think Tiggerz put a good case that I agree with. Note that I have shot and killed a few things over the years and would not put myself in the "love  the little critters class :Pokey: "

Arrr remember the SPCA inspector :tugger: has a vested interest in this. Come on he gets to go out on the sea in a big boat :drinknsin paid for by others so he can justify his sad bastard :buggerd: life. I hope he only eats shit :sunny: as that's the only food that will not feel any pain when it is got ready for consumption. Fucken dick heads. :finger:
