Is 43 the forgotten bit?
Looks like a great ride, hope to do this one day but will probably be checking out the sprints.

Sounds good and I'm tentatively in, bearing in mind I may have to work. Although I suggest an early lunch at the Whangamomona Hotel as I think we'll need it by then. It's at least 3 1/2 - 4 hrs Palmie to Whanga, taking into account gas stops and pics. The place is a bit of a legend too and going in this direction we'll hit the most intense parts of the road after Whanga. The Hotel is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of the area. Afternoon tea and gas in Taumarunui/Turangi? :niceone:

Guys quick note, the petrol station on main rd at Hawera is out of commission with major rebuild, there is another one in Eltham which is still getting tanks as well, this may be ok by then.
There are 3 other gas stations in Hawera and am happy to show you, might go for a ride from Hawera.

Did this road once, a couple of years ago after visiting Shaun Harris for some suspension set up help. Quite an experience. Saw about 3 cars in 150km on that week day. One of my fave rides.

Open to suggestions re stops etc. Seeing as you & Meanie know the road you've probably got a few more clues about times etc. Would prefer to limit stops on the boring bits (ie getting up there and then back from Tamarunui) but keen to take in the scenery on the Forgotten Highway itself and get some pics to match yours!
The Concours should be able to do it with only one stop for gas but we'll have to fit in with whoever has the smallest range so these stops might be ideal for coffee/lunch??? Keen to just have a relaxed ride and go with the flow...

ashhurst to stratford is 207km. My mapping program has it at 2 hours 38min but in reality it is a pretty easy 2 hour trip.
Then FH is 151km and 2 hours 2 mins according to this. When Menie and I went across we stopped a couple of times and had a chat and took our time and it we left stratford at 10:45am and got to Taumaranui at 12:46pm. Although in a bigger group I would be thinking more like 4 or 5 hours to get across FH.

As a local to the area & a frequent rider of SH43 I would HIGHLY recommend stopping @ the Whangamomona pub for lunch & for those that haven't got one yet, a Whanga passport
Cost's $3 & the proceeds support the local school :niceone:
BTW, yep im in for thise ride for sure, but ill prolly turn off @ Taumaranui & head west to the coast & back down to New Plymouth for any other local riders wanting to op for this.

Sounds good. The Daytona will need fuel at Stratford and then will be fine for Turangi although MWV8 and Chanceyy will need to gas at Taumarunui.
There's literally dozens of photo ops on the FH. It took Sarah and I two hours to get from Taumarunui to Whangamomona which is only 88 km. The atmosphere in the various places is just too good to hurry through. So as Cowboyz says below its quite feasible that the FH alone could take 3 - 4 hrs. The road itself can be ridden quite quickly between stops which just adds to the experience. I do recommend a rest stop at the Hotel which is just under halfway. Totally agree with not stopping at the boring bits

The goat died,so poodle was chosen, similar to our government situation.
Nice money container on the bar for donations for upkeep of the road, someone should tell the politicians, our taxes are for that.
Any thoughts on doing the trip reverse way, then when at Whanga pub,say 1.30 ish(depending on start, not sure of time needed from Manawatu),and photo stops, you have say 4 hours riding to get home and maybe 3/4hr for pics from pub to Stratford. On a good run Stratford- Palmy 190 kms say easy 2 hours.Mind you at that time (3pm on)a few cops might be about.

220 is HEAPS. Dont get all excited about carrying extra fuel. Fill up before you leave, fill up in stratford and you will get all the way round to Ohakune if ou want to.

Not quite, theres 14 km of gravel left on the Taumarunui side of Whangamomona. Easy and recently graded.

You'll have no probs Lee. The FH is only 151 kms with fuel at both ends.

Just went for a 70km two up strope and my ass is a little weary... So you are lucky on the VTR..
My seat slopes foward to the tank and doesn't flatten out at all so the boys get a little knocked around, now add a pillion sitting on the very slippery seat and heavy braking situations and what do you have.... Two lumps, one either side of the adams apple lol....
Don't worry hornetchap, you will be fine..

Oh the naivety of it!!!!!!!! I seem to remember not so long ago trying to convince this lot to get to taranaki without stopping and ended up with Meanie and Myself riding alone.
For the wider info. When Meanie and I headed off we never did any excess speeds. We left Ashhurst at 6:55am and arrived in Stratford at 9:01am. Then the detour further north putting us back in Stratford at 10:45 and in Tamuarnui at 12:46. Then Waioru at 2:20. Home at 5:26pm. If you take the easy 1:15 from Waioru then that makes 4pm and take out the northen detour of nearly 2 hours then even with pic stops it shouldnt be later than 5pm. Bet it is alot later than that though.

Would you lot be interested in me setting up a barbecue at Whangamomona on that day?
Was thinking it's a cheaper and Faster option for lunch than waiting ages for the pub food when a heap of bikers all roll in together.
You can still grab your beers at the pub then stroll across the road for 'bangers in bread'. Just a donation to help cover costs maybe.
I will sacrifice my 'ride' as a Thankyou to those who supported my racing over the past couple of seasons. Give something back and all that.
Could also bring a Van for 'breakdown recovery' if needed.
Can bring spare fuel for those a bit unsure.
Taranaki crew: Any one got a decent barbecue I could use?
Just a thought.

Racey.
That's a helluva awesome offer! Let's see what everyone feels about this. We'd need to be absolutely sure of numbers etc so you didn't end up feeding an army or worse preparing to feed an army and have a half dozen turn up! :niceone:

Consider a bbq given mate,3 burner, grill & hot plate wooden trolley with wheels, only prob is in Hawera, would be keen on helping as well,if you have room for two passengers, like the idea of numbers for food, mind you if you scout out to Whanga early morning might be good selection of road kill, just tell em the small long items are skinny (organic)chickens.:sunny:

I cant see it be any more gruelling than the ride we did around Taranaki/Owakino george/eight mile/Taumarunui and home, in fact its less distance
You had no probs doing that one, this,l be a walk in the park
I think the important thing is to get to stratford in a reasonable time so we can enjoy the FH as it should be and have plenty of time left to cruise home
Itd be a shame to have you bail when i know you breeze through this
Racey Rider your offer is bloody awesome and id be keen and quite happy to swing you a few bucks to cover costs and yea a recovery vehicle for the hondas would be good

Had to re-route the throttle cables. The previous idiot owner had them wrapped around the front brake hoses so had to remove them aswell.
Was a good chance to change front brake fluid and do a nice bleed... No more spongy fronts lol......
Went out around the outskirts of palmy then into town to terrorise the locals.... Poor buggas having coffee down George st. The Monster has a great bark on overrun, nice crisp crackle being heard around the streets..
Anyway, see pics for old and new cable routing... Much more clear view of instrument panel!!!

I didn't know any better when I got the bike as I had nothing to compare it against.. All I knew was something was fucked up but it has taken me this long to sort it... It has made a huge difference, now I can see if my indicator is still flashing many a K up the road, or I can now see if I am about to run out of gas....All the important things can be seen...

Goodo - it's not a hard ride so no need to turn it into a 24 hour event. :Police:
Awww dude - the Ace will love it!
Keep trying to tell you my bike is not the problem, it's my backside thats not up to it! I rode from Turangi to the Vinegar hill turn off in one stint last night and the last 30k were mission and unenjoyed, but the coolness off the evening may also have had something to do with that but whatever.
Echoing a young ladies comments about the Ace's seat "it may look comfortable but it ai'nt".

Yeah cheers James, check the above post, Tai'nt no big thing really dude but if I cant ride the bike in "reasonable" comfort then I wont. There are obviously times when you have to like last night in that bloody cold, you dont have an option and that ok, there is no control over that, we thinking about it I could have always left sooner but oh well. But in this instantance I know already that there is a couple of stints at least I wont do in one go. I do try and push myself every now and then to ride a little further to get acustomed to longer distances but I seem to have hit a comfort wall an about 100-110k and if I dont mind not enjoying it I can do another 30k or so then it's time to stop.
Gotten better though coz when I first bought the bike 80k was it, full stop!

Yeah definetely thinking about the sheepskin thingy, damn it, too busy riding it though! But I might give that fellow in Otaki a call, he's sounds pretty on to it, make em while you wait and so on. Failing that the next step would be a "Riderz" re-shaped seat, but that means a trip to the funny farm (Auckland) unless you know of someone reputable thats nearer?

Place in Tauranga that does them for around $500, they have had a thread on kb with an offer of a discount for kb members They supposed to be good

Hmm, 500 slides is pretty big coin, reckon a Corbin single seat would'nt be much dearer. Perhaps reshaping a single seat like on the Ace would work out cheaper, food for thought anyway. The best thing of all I could do for my bike comfort probably is loose some friggin weight!

Date 25 November 2007.
Suggested route/plan:
Leave Palmy 8-8:30ish
Cruise on up to Stratford and stop for a coffee/petrol break
Head on up Highway 43 stopping whenever people might want to take snaps etc.
Lunch in Tamarunui or Turangi. Gas if needed.
Potter on down highway 1 and stop either at Flat Hills or Mangaweka for another coffee/petrol stop.
Home to Palmy over Vinegar Hill.

In palmy that can tear your seat down and reshape, re-faom with softer stuff etc etc then re cover... I can't remember the name of the out fit but the repaired my textile pants too look like they were never burnt.. Will PM you the name when I get home tonight.. Couldnt agree more nzsarge..if you're not comfortable you're not enjoying the ride. I know without my "spongebob" I can only handle about 40 mins on the back of the bike before it gets uncomfortable. The castlepoint ride was basically my first all day ride and I think I coped pretty well but was eager to get back home once we got back to masterton. Definitely started to get uncomfortable from there onwards.

Left Wanganui at 9am, drove up to Stradford and onto the forgotten highway. Stopped at the Whangamomona Hotel and met Geoff.
I anyone is keen to do this same ride next year (early ) and book in for a night of drinking etc then we need to get in quick. He said they are starting to get bookings for March already. But if we give him numbers he can get it all set up food wise and rooms. They have good parking out the back for bikes apparently.
Last weekend he had 41 bikers drinking till 2am so it gets full.
After running into an old Army instructor who now works for MTA and the pair of us diagnosing an ill Cam Chain Tensioner for an old lady parked at the hotel I was on my way again to Taumaranui and down to Wanga's via the Para Para's.
All in all the road isn't too bad. They have been doing some work on the 12km gravel section but it isn't deep gravel, more like bike sharp stones. So some care will be needed however I suspect the road will have been traffic swept by then..
This is going to be an awsome ride and I can't wait.
Will need to set the Sag on the Monster before this as it may be jumping all over the show riding solo and the road is up down left and right with many bumpy parts...

:niceone:

Used to go from Hawera to Piopio took about 2-2 1/4hrs about 200km,Stratford is 30 km north of Hawera. Should be able to get to Stratford in 3hrs from Hamilton.Took us an easy 3 1/2 hrs from Hawera to Hamilton, mind you depends on the road and condition with road works.Awakino still has gas station open, otherwise next one is Urenui.

Heard there are a few roadworks around the place north of Waitara, but haven't been up there myself lately. Unsure how long Awakino is going to be open for. Plenty of gas at Waitara, possibly even a coffee shop too. Te Kuiti to Waitara is easy on a tank with plenty to spare.... should be easy, stop making excuses Hamilton crew....

I plan to either catch the NP crew at the turnoff, or see everyone at Stratford.
Might be able to rustle up 1-2 from Ham town.
Does 10.45-11.00ish in Stratford sound about right?
NP lot will be at Shell Stratford at 10 -10:30am Sunday.

Probably hjc,matching pair lol.
Pissed myself at the ladies selling on right side as you walked in,biggish lady was giving tips on the rabbit, letting you try the feel and how it went in your hand,on inspection I asked if the reverse cycle was incase it got stuck, much like reverse on my drill. And embarressed the shit out of a guy buying a vib for his girl, was asked red or blue,I piped up and said he's wearing a holden shirt he'll take a red one.She had ford top on so went blue. Was an eye opener too,was asked if I wanted the pics on couch with the girls, said nah and also said to wife she'd put the pics on here.Saw quiet a few elderly people(50+),good on em I say, will be there hopefully when I get old lol.Shit I'm nearly there.

Yeah I am sure i could fabricate something up... A quick thought was rear demister wire from a car. They run 12v. Make up a little box with the wires working like oven elements, top and bottom. Would need an on off switch so you could time the cook time then turn off, pull over and eat..
Hhhmm this seems like a cool project...
