View Full Version : Amusing Incident

Probably complete bullshit ... but i got a laugh out of it.

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office. Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:

"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.

Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.

Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed.

Good Day"

Was in Scotland a month and saw an old warbird come down the glen we in were nice low and slow which was fuckin awesome...... but paled in comparison to the Eurofighter that came through a few minutes later just as low but not so slow!

Campbells not welcome.

Going back a few years the Skyhawks used to do low level training in the Marlbrough Sounds and would come over the ridge behind the house and down towards the sea and out of the bay low enough to be lifting spray off the water, was absolutely awesome until the friggin neighbor complained and the never did it again! }=(

A few years ago, I was in Perth, and visited the naval base open day on my last weekend there. The local RNZAF Skyhawk squadron (this was before Alan Clark decided they were too dangerous and needed to be locked up in a hangar) joined in, and performed a few stunts and whatnot. I tell you what - they may not be the fastest or most modern planes around, but they're pretty stunning when they do a full-throttle fly-past at less than mast-head height. :shit:

Bloody excellent! Loved the 3rd of those. Wouldn't need to perve at the sunbathing beauties - would already have a huge boner from all that Lima-Lima stuff!

No wonder the RAF have stopped investigating claims, when local residents say their tv aerial has being blown off the top of their roof.:sweatdrop

I wouldn't be surprised if that was completely true - being a rep, I used to take the A68 inland route, which in those days didn't have all the speed cameras on it that the A1 had. In between those two roads is the Otterburn ranges, a live fire training ground.

Anyway, one memorable Friday afternoon, heading south at shall we say, get home ASAP speeds, I came over one of those crests to find a Lynx anti-tank heli hovering just over the road about 100 yards ahead...the thing went up like it was in a lift and I took a few minutes to get my heart rate back under control. I can still see those TOW tubes looking at me!

Sod, yer speed cameras, I never broke the limit past Otterburn ever again, and changed my regular route out of S'land to the A66 (but that's another story)

Pity the Dutchy was quick enough....otherwise I'm sure we'd see very few radars employed in future to catch the unwary....

I first heard this story about the time of the Falkland war (1982) and it involved a Harrier jet rather than a Tornado, and a shrike missile. It was obviously false even in those days before the internet, as an ARM would not be armed, even for training, over home terroritory. A Sidewider or similar (even a pheonix) would not be able to lock onto radar.

Yeah that's true as well - not only is the Sidewinder an Air-to-Air missile - it also uses an IR homing system... ;)

This may well be an urban legend (or the bit about the missile lock could be an embellishment) and the '50 would not bother complaining to the RAF anyway but.... while driving around Scotland in the early 80's in an "older" car I was accelerating hard up a long straight hill..... Suddenly there was a deafening roar, I thought the engine was about to drop out the car! The very next second two Tornado jets passed me heading in the same direction at VERY low level and quickly disappeared over the hill I was climbing. They were sub-sonic but only just!

The RAF do have low level training areas in the more remote and hilly areas of the country. I've often wondered whether I was used for a little target practice that day.

Two Hunter traffic patrol officers from Newcastle were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the F3 Freeway. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 800kph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a RAAF Williamtown FA-18 fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over Wyong, approaching from the ocean.

Back at police headquarters the Local Area Commander fired off a stiff complaint to the RAAF Liaison officer at Williamtown.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAAF style:

'Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.

I like them all jets & props, the P51's sure sound good but one of my favourite propeller driven planes would be the Hawker Sea Fury
