You want best OR cheapest?
http://www.discount-domains.co.nz
you could try some dodgey US registrar - there are plenty.
And they are cheap as fuck..
but id rather pay slightly more and support an NZ company who is good and answers the phone..
(also who knows what dns glue is :P)

.nz domains are controlled by the DNC (domain name commisioner) and are therefore a "set" price.
Wholesalers (like me) pay $22 per year for .nz domains, so $25-$30 is a normal charge to joe public.
.com's however are controlled by some dodgy US state dept (internic) :)
and therefore NZ sellers are just reseller of some other US company.
We (me as the company I work for) buy our .com's from tucows at a ridculous $25 USD per year, but they supply "intergration" so the extra charge is worth it.
As a consumer with a credit card tho' you have the option to shop around
Just avoid the "fly by nighters"
Chances are you'll end up buying from ENOM tho'
ENOM are buying up every large .com registrar there is

Also, bear in mind that after you register a .com, there's a stand-down period before you can transfer it. If you plan on hosting a site immediately you will probably want to register it through your ISP of choice to save hassle.

err or change the nameservers to that of your hoster?
why transfer between US registrars? there are no NZ .com registrars to transfer to

thats fine. Google 'online whois' and punch in your 'large-buttplugs4u.com' or whatever yours is.
It will give you a list of contact options, Technical, Adminstrative, etc etc.
Thats your first point of call for tracking down whomever owns it.

El-cheapo registrations...not had any probs with godaddy myself. I always use an escrow service like www.escrow.com or moneybrokers.com when transferring.
PM me if you need a hand with this Finn as it's a bit of a mine-field
Do you want kiwi hosting or international hosting?

Nah you need a UDAI for .nz domains to transfer (or "steal") and as long as they cant get into your email you normally cannot get that.

Have used www.webhostingspace.net, US$10/yr registration. Not had any probs with .net/.com reg and support for hosting has been good. Stupid cheap hosting costs... from about US$1.65/mnth for basic/small plan.
