View Full Version : Auckland: Ride to work day

Yes, it's that day again.

Ride to work day.

It's NOVEMBER the 7th. That's THIS WEDNESDAY. Yes, THIS Wednesday. The one in three day's time. No I don't know where the year has gone to either, but nonetheless, Ride to Work Day is this Wednesday.

So on Wednesday, get the bike out and ride to werk. Or school. Or Uni. Or just ride round in a circle. Or if y' work at home ride AWAY from work.

Anyway. just get the bike out and ride it.

But wait . THERE'S MORE.

While you're riding to werk (or wherever, I'm not going through that again), call in at your friendly local McDonalds. Buy a coffee or a brekkie or summit, and make a donation to Ronald McDoanld. They help sick children. Y' wanta help sick children don't y' ? I mean , even if y' don't you're not going to admit it here. And then , send your receipt into BRONZ and y' go in the draw to win a FREE HELMET.

That's free. As in a PRIZE. So y' get to be a caring, kind biker person, helping sick children, bringing happiness to little kiddies etc (I'm gonna work kittens in here somehow) AND y' get a free lid too. Better specify a larger size, to allow for head swelling.

But wait. THERE'S MORE.

If you go to the Greenlane, or Pt Chev, or Grey Lynn or Manukau Maccas to do the Ronald McDonald donation thing and help wipe the tears from those little cheeks, and still those quivering lips (are you ready for the kittens yet?), you can get a Ronnie Run badge. These are the same badges that were used on the original Ronnie Run as organised by Telemarchios (world famous in an obscure suburb). So if you've been collecting the Ronnie Run badges since 1735, and your life has been made bleak cheerless and purposeless becos you thought you couldn't get another one, do not despair. Help is as close as Maccas .

But wait. THERE'S MORE.

If you work in the CBD and are doing the ride to work thing, we can make YOU a TV STAR. We need half a dozen cute, hunky, sexy, intelligent, sensitive, brawny, buffed hunks to become TV stars. As we can't find them, we'll settle for you instead (chicks very welcome too) . You just have to ride up Hobson St at 7:40am. Whereupon Breakfast TV (and a real hot reporter chick) will film you. Instant stardom. Well, if not stardom, planetdom.Or space dust-dom. Anyway, y'get to go on TV. And maybe chat up the reporter chick. Post if you're interested.

So don't delay. There is no excuse. Just do it. Ride to Work. Or I'll bring on the kittens.

Where do you live Ixion, it's pissing down here.....I've had to fit water wings to the DR to get out of the carport. This is likely to become "the ride to work with optional breaststroke" day tomorrow.

That is now. This is Auckland, so there will be four changes of weather before tomorrow.

The rain will clear this afternoon as the front moves over, giving way to sunny skies tomorrow.

Weather report for tomorrow

North Island, mainly fine, remaining showers in the north clearing. A few late showers along the east coast. South Island, early drizzle in the west, then fine. Mainly fine elsewhere, but showers in the far south, late showers in the east.

And I sacrificed a cyberkitten to the biker gods to be on the safe side.

(Of course, a real biker rides to work every day rain or shine )

I rode the gixxer to work yesterday, rode the gixxer to work today and will definitely ride the gixxer to work tomorrow, because that reporter chick sounds absolutely lovely on the phone.

Best then, that, you get your bike all cleaned up and have it all polished and shiney........

Oh dear, what a shame your bike doesn't have a lot of chrome on it to make it all shiney......:Pokey:

Cos after just speaking to her on the ph, she will be checking out the bikes to see which one she will sit on the back of.

Don't get too excited gents. I understand Big Dave is going to be rocking up on the Harley of all Harleys to pilot her.

I'm fairly sure it won't be mine then....mind you, the worst of the mud has dissolved lately revealing the fetching scratched and dented tank.

:weep:

I wonder if kiwifruit would let me borrow the MV?

Hmmm.

Oh, that's right, he went and bought one without a pillion seat.

I told him, I said, buy one with a pillion seat, but did he listen? Noooooo, he did not listen. Goddammit. What is the point of an MV without a pillion seat?

Ixion
6th November 2007, 11:10
Where chicks are concerned, even an MV does not trump a Harley. It's the chrome. And the vibration. The chrome gets them on, and the vibration gets them off.

Oh the temptation... will be finishing the work thing at midnight, if I can snaffle a nap on station and get some decent kip at home, I could well be tempted to tail this wee ride...

...and save the kiddies of course...

You want I should dust off the Moggy Club in case any more persuasion is required?

I called into Pt Chev and they knew nought about this, they also rung Grey Lynn for me and again they knew nothing.

Just seen the list on TV and apparently its WESTGATE mcDonald's.

Unlikely the Maccas staff would know about it. We tried to see if the word could be got out to them, but apparently it is too hard, because of multiple shifts and such like.

I was on station at green Lane from 6:30. peggy was lined up to be at Grey Lynn (though I haven't confirmed she made it yet). The Starnger was going to do Pt Chev. Originally we hoped to have someone at Westgate 9and teh SHore) but we ran out of volunteers.

Given that I didn't see a soul at Green lane I doubt there was much missed.

How did the TV show go ?

I went to Pt Chev after leaving the filming..... trying to explain it to staff was kinda hard (english is their second language), so they got the Manager...... and even he knew nought..... so he kindly went off to ring Grey Lynn.

So obviously no one showed up to drop off the badges etc.

Filming went good, Big Dave and Klingon spoke.
We rode from the forecourt area and lined up by the set of lights and then rode back into the forecourt area. We did do a practise run beforehand.

I taped it and watched it back, and it looked ok.

Sorry I cant load it up for all to see.

PS: I am wanting to get a badge thou !

How did the TV show go ?

It went well - Big Dave said "stick with me and I'll make you a star" and he did :D

Oh, and nobody bumped into each other or fell off or did a wheelie or left their light on and got a flat battery.
But someone did try to steal crashe's bike while she was still on it! :spanking: I'll let her tell that story.

No, the maccas staff were not involved. Apparently it's too hard to bring them into the loop, cos of shifts and bad english, and some sites are franchises and and and .

But The Stranger was on station at Pt Chev from 6:15 till 8:15. You should have seen him ?

Did you get a McDs receipt ? If so send it in (I'll post an address as soon as I find it out) and go in the helmet draw.

I'll organise a badge for you (and anyone else interested) Just post up y' name

Auckland City Council sponsors a free breakfast in February for Bike to Work Day (i.e. the organic zero-emissions kind of bike). http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/whatson/events/biketowork/default.asp

Maybe next year they could also sponsor breakfast and/or freebies for the emission-reducing, congestion-busting, parking-freeing motorised kind of bike?

And maybe Mayor Banks could join us for the ride?

Ixion
7th November 2007, 10:00
It would probably be possible to arrange sponsorship for some sort of breakfast (ACC or others).

The problem I see is that Dorkland is so big.

I think the treadley one was just in the CBD, and sort of assumed that anyone who didn't work in the CBD wasn't worth considering. Probably true for treadleys but not so for bikes.

So it would need to be a number of breakfasts , at various points. Which gets much more complex and much more expensive.

Given the resounding non interest in the "Meet at Maccas" theme, I suspect that breakfasts might be equally unpatronised. Perhaps because the treadley crowd tend to work in jobs where arriving to work on time is less important? (That's not actually a shot at the treadlers, just that some jobs are less clock driven) . So they can take the time out of the morning, whereas bikers tend to have to be at work on time and therefore the morning communt is more time stressed ?

if you havent haerd the cops where out in force busting people and ticketing them for
lane splitting
The POLICE where wading into the traffic around Tristram Ave pulling bikers off the road for lane splitting!!!!
Groups were being pulled off at a time getting a $50 fine
The ticket is for "failing to stay within the entirety of a lane"
great support huh

Went to the BRONZ meeting tonight and got myself a new good looking FFM M9 lid.

It was their monthly meeting and I must say that I was impressed with the thought and actions that they are taking on, on our behalf. Enough for me to join.
