Cheers For all the help - now here's the weekend report...
I hop on the bike at 4:45 and get to Taupo at 10pm. This is my first long ride ever, so I don't think it was tooo bad, but here's why it took so long:
AKL -> Ngaruawahia - fine, except for the traffic - every man woman dog whelp sideboard and goldfish was on the road... This was my first introduction to the biker signal of holding a hand out doing "talky" signs... for about 2 ks, this nice cruiser dude was riding in front of me pretending to be a lobster before I realised he meant my indicator was still going... If you are a KBer - thanks!
Ngaruawahia -> Pirongia ... Easy - done this road in the cage before. nice road not many people - was able to pootle along at around 70-80 ks for most of it... Bum getting numb, but still Ok - Started to think I might've got lost before Te Awamutu, but that was probably saddle soreness.... I was looking for it looking for it looking for it - Ooooooh - there it is. As an aside, there was a nice big group of bikers out for a trip to Raglan at the cafe that I stopped and said "Hi" to.
Pirongia to Te Awamutu -> Kihikihi ... Starting to get very saddle sore now... I'd chosen the wrong pair of trousers (Grommet) .... I was wearing a pair of boardshorts under my overtrousers. Nice shorts they are, but they have seams and pockets... and they wrinkled and got creases in them which ate into my arse... Not pleasant. But the road was nice... and clear... and the sunset was beautiful.... I came steaming in to Kihikihi all happy and feeling very filmic - That mental helicopter that follows me making me look good was taking some great shots - at one point I even thought I was Steve McQueen from The Great Escape - Man was I having fun. So much fun that:
Kihikihi to Te Kuiti!!!!!! Yup - I saw the Marae in Kihikihi and thought "I'm supposed to turn there, aren't I? or is it later - I think it's later..." And then carried on riding... and riding.... and riding... and end up in Te Kuiti.... Nice Shell station with a map. Good time to get off the bike and stretch. No-one tells you that Saddlesoreness goes away almost the moment you get off the bike.... AND THEN HURTS LIKE HELL when you get back on M****F**** was the next 10K painful. But.... the 30 from Te Kuiti is nice at 100ks in the dark... Yeah, I know - I'm a learner, but I had to be in Taupo at 10 or I would lose my bed for the night.... Nice twisty turny things... Lots of "I think I can take this corner at .... A LOT LESS THAN THIS!!!!" training... But no bins, and I now have a lot more respect for the road. I also know what my limits are to a certain extent and don't like finding them ;-)
So - All in all a nice run - lovely weather.... nice roads.... Great time. The trip back was fun too - I came up the 1 to Toke and then to Arapuni->Ngaruawahia and on. Just as an aside - Up'n'Go is GREAT for bikers - no helmet removal, just lift the visor and suck on the straw.... A whole meal in 10 seconds.....
Cheers for all the advice - wish I'd taken it! :-)
