Which bike to use for road trip?

Off to the South Island, gonna do a few days riding down there. Still on restricted licence, can legally ride my weak GN. However, just bought me big bro's Honda CX400 off him and REALLY wanna take that. Hmmmm.

Which bike should I take ya reckon? What are a) the chances of needing to show my licence, and b) the consequences for having a bigger bike than allowed?

That being said, I'm sure the 400cc would make for a more enjoyable trip. Can't say I'd recommend it though.

My suggestion is take the smaller bike, as this is supposed to be an adventure rather than a race ie; enjoy the bit in between points A and B rather than measure the time elapsed between them.
I know the GN will be a pain but you'll look back on the hilarity of it afterwards and will probably meet more people / have memorable experiences with this bike.

Yep, I reckon the GN would be awesome fun! Probaly go better than my 200 and that gets around a few places, recently doin 1500kms in 3 weekends, guys think it's a great laugh and I find it a hell of alot of fun! :ride: Theres people on Advrider forums in the minimalist thread (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201349, A bloody good read) that are doing 1000's of MILES on them in the space of weeks!.

Plus you'll be legal which is great for piece of mind. when are you going?

I have a CX400 custom and a CX400 euro. Take the GN250 with a tall pack and either a pack on your back or load the pack rack to give you a back rest. this will give you better view of the scenery. The CX400sport will load up your forearms too much. Also you can load more on a cruser. Have done the southern tour with this set up on the CX400 custom. Take your time enjoy your self and have the bragging rights on the GN.

Cheers people, the GN it is. It has a windscreen (put it on myself) and will have a soft pack between me and the pack rack so it'll be a cruisy chilled out ride.

Did lotsa "touring" with the CJ250T (Honda... pig) recall having cans of petrol strapped on as you couldn't buy gas on the weekend. Funny as fuk when my mate lost a gallon tin going through the "staircase" Arthus Pass ... stopped every 20ks and topped up as the damn can had a small hole in it...

Great times, enjoy the pace and no sweating over the cops
