Which bike to use for road trip?

Off to the South Island, gonna do a few days riding down there. Still on restricted licence, can legally ride my weak GN. However, just bought me big bro's Honda CX400 off him and REALLY wanna take that. Hmmmm.

Which bike should I take ya reckon? What are a) the chances of needing to show my licence, and b) the consequences for having a bigger bike than allowed?

    GN250 or CX400?

Consequences are a $400 fine every time you get pinged.

I may happen, it may not.

    You takes your chances.

    ... and 25 demerit points.

That being said, I'm sure the 400cc would make for a more enjoyable trip. Can't say I'd recommend it though.

Take the GN...... you will have the time of your life and for years after you will talk about the time you toured the SI on a GN250

Oh nuts. Yeah the sensible option is definitely the GN ain't it. But it's such poos up hills! But yes, good feedback.

Take the GN. Bragging rights for touring on it, plus the comfortable feeling of being legal on the road.

Right, I feel better now....hard day in the traffic

My suggestion is take the smaller bike, as this is supposed to be an adventure rather than a race ie; enjoy the bit in between points A and B rather than measure the time elapsed between them.
I know the GN will be a pain but you'll look back on the hilarity of it afterwards and will probably meet more people / have memorable experiences with this bike.
If you need any inspiration, read Jantar's thread on the postie bike challeng in the ride report section.
Get out there and have a ball, you'll have a wonderful trip.

The GN'll be better on all those interesting looking gravel roads too.

WOT 'e said. Do what you will you're a grown up... aren't you? Why don't you ride the 400 now? Answer that and there's your answer.

Yep, I reckon the GN would be awesome fun! Probaly go better than my 200 and that gets around a few places, recently doin 1500kms in 3 weekends, guys think it's a great laugh and I find it a hell of alot of fun! Theres people on Advrider forums in the minimalist thread (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201349, A bloody good read) that are doing 1000's of MILES on them in the space of weeks!.

Plus you'll be legal which is great for piece of mind. when are you going?
    Have fun mate!

    Which Bike??????

I have a CX400 custom and a CX400 euro. Take the GN250 with a tall pack and either a pack on your back or load the pack rack to give you a back rest. this will give you better view of the scenery. The CX400sport will load up your forearms too much. Also you can load more on a cruser. Have done the southern tour with this set up on the CX400 custom. Take your time enjoy your self and have the bragging rights on the GN.

Off for Christmas in Dunedin but leaving on the 21st from Picton. Will have heaps of time on my way back too. Am a true blue South Islander so no new places for me really, but looking forward to it eh.

Cheers people, the GN it is. It has a windscreen (put it on myself) and will have a soft pack between me and the pack rack so it'll be a cruisy chilled out ride.

Take the GN250. They don't have any top end performance, but they're a lot of fun.

Assuming, of course, that you're not a fatty.
