Just in case anyone is interested. Here's some pics off the 'net of what the North-Western link thru to the Shore is gonna end up like (the roadworks make it kinda obvioous too). It'll good for me thats for sure! Live on a quiet island and be 4 mins of open road away from the NW'ern and Northern! I have a pic somewhere that is way better resolution and shows all the zoning and everything. Will have a poke around for it.

Any idea of the timeframe for that?

Also, it looks like 3 lanes each side coming from the city. Widening the 2 lane part of SH16 out to Westgate is long overdue.

Hopefully the section from Hobby to Constellation will be opening soon. It appears that roadmarking and a sweep is all that is needed, then some dipshit of a politician will cut a ribbon. A new piece of road that can be used as a carpark...

We'll all be dead before it's finished. I mean, how fast can 2 guys build a motorway?

Particularly when one is there to ensure Health and Safety protocols are adhered to

Especially when we have a "building season" for roads...

Probably like duck shooting season and equally as long.

they would be quicker if they werent sharing the one wheelbarrow.

i love all these Auckland motorway extensions and shit, everytime i am up there the only difference i have seen, is they have made room for more vehicles to sit on them going nowhere for hours.

I did alot of work on the green bit of the motorway, rest assured its going to be safe - gets my seal of approval anyway!

They should be starting it as soon as they finish the Greehithe section.

Yeah the Constellation link look like it'll be soon. They have poured most of the barriers.

I've seen men in hardhats (in the open?) suits and surverying gear at the end of the NW'ern lately but who knows?

RM, they build roads in Dubai and Finland. Do they stop here when it's too hot or too cold I wonder?

I worked on that motorway with Renegade. They only stopped when it was too dangerous to work. During the winter there is no way they could get their heavy machinery across the site, nor our small utes to test the fill.

Cool! That was more a poke at RM, I've been watching the work with interest. My mate lives at the house thats pretty much in the middle of the site office at Cuthill. Did you do anything on the tunnels? Went up for a look the other day and the cutting for the other side of the bridge (above the sewage lakes on the south side) is looking pretty massive! Thats a lot of dirt and a gap for a huge bridge.

The company behind the motorway developments is this (http://www.wilsonparking.co.nz/) one...

there are no tunnels? are you refering to the bridges?

ive been droped down a 13m pile hole (2m dia i think) that was fun, a bit unsafe as they didnt have a gas tester to test if there was any poisins down the hole, they didnt tell me about that until AFTER i'd been down!

I know it was a bit of a pisstake at RM, (and I really hate stiking up for him, honest) but it is unfortuntly Auckland Regional Council Regulations, unless you get down on your hands and knees and give the prick that gives out winter earthworks consents a good polishing.

Fuck the ARC take all the fun out of digging dirty great big wholes and knocking shit over dont they.

And the other's there to ensure the local taniwha has enough cash in its pocket.

Funny you mention that. I was reading the other week about why NZ projects are so expensive and Europeans can build awesome shit for a tenth of the (adjusted of course) cost.

RM there are some tunnels hiding somewhere (http://www.allianz.com/en/allianz_group/press_center/news_dossiers/risk_management/news_2006-06-26.html) I'm sure. And didn't you know if there are no CO2 meters in enclosed spaces it's still accepatable practice to stuff small animals into holes instead?

Here's a bridge. (http://www.northerngateway.co.nz/index.php/content/waiwera_viaduct)

That's the SH1 north extension, between Puhoi & Orewa. Quite impressive it is too. They must've dug the tunnel entirely from one side as the other end comes out halfway up a cliff-face to a bridge that doesn't meet up with it yet:blink:

i think the greenhite section had 3 taniphas (sp?) on it, the rumor was it cost 50k each to get rid of them.

and yeah theres no tunnles on the bit i worked on, its cool to see how they build bridges tho, they drill the piles (as current ground level is close to final bridge level) then place the bridge down. then way later they actuall dig out the muck under the bridge. sorta liek the oppersite way you think about it.

oh and we found a decent size ship burried in there.

Apparently some naughty people have been moving the cones aside and using the green bit as a secret speedway after dark:nono::nono:

It's incredible to see how they built the Auckland Harbour Bridge. They put hollow piles down, then lowered men inside the piles and they dug the mud out by hand, way below sea level. They used to have to come up slowly so they didn't get the bends. All the mud was brought back to the surface in buckets.

Go to this page http://www.transit.govt.nz/road/AHB.jsp scroll to the bottom and take a look at the 1951 - 1971 document. Hair-raising stuff!

it was some cargo thing that got burried under about 5m of dirt. Nothing speical, those guys who dig up old stuff came had a look at it but they said it was pretty common.

there was a tiny little creak where we found it, it must of been alot bigger about 50 years ago!

So that they can build subdivisions further out and houses closer together so that there's enough cars to gridlock the new bit.

motorways sux though, very few new roads are actually any fun for bikers.

Pancakes
8th November 2007, 23:17
Oh I wouldn't say that! If your doing $1.30 and the cars maybe 90 the differential allows for some good hard 3 lane turns to be put in. Plenty of fun!

Greville Road is new enough and thats a laugh to get off then on again!

Yeah. And then they fill it quick-set concrete. One of the workers was buried alive, and remains in, pile 4.

No mate. During the construction they stopped work for a week (IIRC) When it happend.

I seem to remember the guy saying that about 8 people lost their lives on the construction of the bridge and approaches. Don't know the true figure, but concrete man wasn't the only one.

Go do the walk across the bridge, they teach you a hell of a lot of interesting stuff about it.

There's a plaque dedicated to the people died during construction of the harbour bridge. Four people I think. It's on the North Shore side, end of Northcote point.

and it's open!!

As my mate who lives at the Shore end it doesn't actually go anywhere. True but is nice and scenic as a motorway can be. Was posted at 50K's for the first few days. Anyone try doing 50 on the motorway with light traffic? I thought it was a joke but there was enough loose chip to justify it, and cops to enforce too. I found a truck and tucked in behind.

Well on Friday they opened the new side of the upper harbour bridge "there goes traffic congestion" they hailed.. well yes.. they opened the new bridge.. but CLOSED the other fricking side.. *muppets* Caused havoc...

Now that things are running a "little" smoother (im a daily commuter) having two lanes and sometimes three means I can now hoon along during rush hour traffic as well as the middle of the night ;) mwuahahahaha... :devil2: ...although I ignored the 50k signs along the new motorway the first time... "pah, 50k? its a smegging mway.. ideots!" ...then when my bike started traveling diagonally on all the loose seal and fishtailing on the *huge* mounds of seal everywhere.. I slowed down a tad... :crybaby:

Not a fan though. I wont use it regularly, actually takes longer than staying on S16 *pillocks*
