View Full Version : Ewwww. Squishy knee.

Attention all medically-aware KBers. This is, well, a bit odd.

Two weeks on from my recent bin, my left knee has a bag of squishy fluid (comprising a hemisphere of about 8cm diameter and 2cm height) floating under the skin above the joint.

I first noticed it at the gym today, as it bounced up and down against my kneecap while I was on the treadmill.

There's no pain associated with it.

Anyone have any experience with or knowledge of such wack-ass goings on? Is it worth bothering my GP to drain it or summat before it mutates into an Indigestible Wad, or will it just go away?

And, to all you inevitable wiseguys who are about to point out that KB isn't a Source of Medical Advice, yes, I know that. But I'd still be interested in hearing any relevant trauma-injury information that might reside in the local hive mind.

Go get it drained dude.

It will get painfull if you don't. Should probably get it X-Rayed too - when mine did that I had fractured my patella, and there was no pain associated with that either.

Ooooh, water on the knee - you'll be dead tomorrow :doctor:

I've had water on the knee from a push bike accident I had when I was 14 - it comes and goes over the years...not there now,but has just disapeared after a couple of years stay, will return again?? Worry about it if the joint gets sore.

Jab a Fresh Up straw into it and drain it at work into the waste paper bin - gain some cred...

Squishy fluid leakage is not normal. The fact that it hasn't gone away after 2 weeks is a pretty good indicator that it's not planning to at this stage. Bite the bullet, take out a loan and go and to your local A&E where you can get x-rays done. Not sure what's going on - I just do the initial patchups and leathers cutting off when bikies do the big offskis. And I might add that cutting leathers is bloody hard work and only done when absolutely necessary, so you can all stop whinging when we get our clothing shears out!

More importantly does this mean you'll now have to tell your wife about your gymnastics over the car? Or will she just think you limping around is quite normal?

Best advice I've seen all year. Better yet, wait until Friday so it's a 3 day week.

Go get it looked at dude, thats certainly a sign that something needs draining/fixing/removing! It could be a conjoined twin growing inside your knee. Or, one of those lumps with hair and teeth in it

Id concur with that prognosis doctor, itll probably hurt more when it starts teething. It might be a good idea to purchase some bonjella, just in case.

Well shute - seeing as we are paying for it in outrageously high ACC premiums, find the most expensive quack that you can, and what the hell - get the works.

Funny how those involved in high injury sports don't pay additional ACC premiums.

Your doctor will look at it, take $40 off you and send you home. The fluid is there for a reason -- you obviously caused some damage during your "off". It may have taken some time for it to move from your head to your knee. But there's nothing that time won't heal.

Wow! Youse guys are really sympathetic - NOT!!
Remind me to never mention any misshaps on this site!

Hey Random - if you think this is the result of your off or even if you don't think it is, just say it was and the old ACC will cover most of it. Stuff it, we pay enough in ACC premiums on our rego so we might as well get somehting back from the bastards. :shifty:

To put in some sensible advice here, this is what happens to me:

After cycling up One Tree Hill twice, I get the fluid leakage out of my knee, and it sits as a blob about 1cm proud and 4x2cm, at the top inside of my kneecap. This is due to 1) strain on the knee and 2) previous bashing around of the knee, making it leaky.
Essentially there is some lube in your joints, and they are a bit worn, so are leaking a little. If it goes away after your exercise (it should after a few hours) then you may not have a problem. If it persists, get it drained and get an x-ray on your knee to see if its actually broken and hence leaking. What may have happened is that the leakage occurred immediately after the accident and your knee has subsquently patched itself up.

It seems to be rather large and unusual, so I'd probably get it checked out.... But be aware that if you bash your knee about too much, it starts to leak when you strain it eg cycling or running.

Disclaimer: No matter how much it might sound like it, I have no medical training whatsoever.....

That's interesting PT, ta. It hasn't gone away since last night, it's just built up slowly over the last two weeks since the accident. It didn't happen while I was running, I just noticed it as soon as I started, given that it was bouncing against my patella in an annoying fashion.

An ACC-funded GP visit and X-ray seems the way to go. Heck, even if it's not fully ACC-covered, my employer pays my medical insurance; I might as well *use* it at least once.

If I get any juicy [sic] X-ray photos, I'll scan and post them.

It ought to go away - your lymphatic system (I think) takes care of it.... I guess that you might be leaking faster than you can tidy yourself up....

I fainted on Sunday when I had a IV drip put in my arm...I often pass-out after looking at dodgy things..

Narh get yah knee checked out, cause you don't wanna have a gammy leg 15 years down the track.

the fluid is there as the result of an injury obviously, unfortunately the knee is not particularly vascular and therefore is slow to heal, cartilidge injuries are unlikely to heal anytime soon. So take everyone's ( well almost everyone's) advice and go see the Dr, you may need surgery or anti inflammatory drugs, or just need to rest and support it, but an xray will soon tell all. Waiting and dithering will lead to more hassles in the end.
