My thoughts on 2 tyres I just replaced.

Just got back from town after putting 2 new tyres on the bike. The Michellin Pilot Road 2 that was taken off the rear has just done 12,635km and the Metezler Racetec had 8,345km on it but the Racetec I brought second hand off a guy who was using it as a practice tyre on manfield for $70. I commute every day and have a mix of quiet tootling to cafe racing and the PR2 did the job in all sorts of weather. I have always felt that the bike would do what I thought it would do and would recommend the PR2 for road use.
The RT tyre was an interm measure cause I was feeling poor at the time and it did its job but was noticeably different from cold to hot although it seemed to heat up rather quickly.

Because they were extremely cheap and have got good reviews from what I have seen I have put a matching set of Metzeler MEz4s on now for a total of $416.70 from Phil Turnballs. Considering the PR2 was $313 for one the price of the MEz4s is just too good to pass up and the guys at the shop seem to think they will wear about the same as the PR2's. Heres hoping so. I dont think anyone can complain with over 12k out of a rear tyre.

You will be very lucky to get that sort of mileage out of a Mez4. And it won't feel as nice or planted as the PR2.
I reckon you should have got some 'independent' advice before changing over.

Seriously. If I get 8600km out of these tyres then bang for buck they are going to be about the same. I hope they ride alright. I have only ridden home so havent gone round a corner yet. Fingers crossed..............

You have at least got a reasonable choice or tyres,mine were limited because of 16fr and 17 rear,seems dam cheap so as you say distance travelled will be interesting.My sport demons were $350 set so if I had choice of compound and budget choice might have been different,but was advised to keep em matched.

For $250 per pair, you can buy used Continental race attacks off Two Smoker. Ask Bugjuice, Kiwifruit, The Stranger, or Surfchick what they think of that deal

Well that seals it for me, new tyre for me on friday and it'll be a Road 2.
Will be sticking to a Pilot Power on the front when I change it though.

One more positive not mentioned there. For my riding anyway, they tend to hold their shape a lot better so you don't loose the sharp handling as the tyre wears.

Just thinking about this cos you always hear don't use mismatched tyres etc but when people normally wear the rear first then end up with a new rear and a half worn front of the same type that's still a mis-match in profiles eh?

I havent been religous in keeping tyres matched. This tyre change is the first time I have ever done both at the same time and that was cause the front was second hand so half worn when I put it on the bike. I like a soft front as front wheel slides are not good for my heart. Rear wheel slides and its kinda just meh.....

Update on these MEz4s. Just did a cafe ride and they seem to heat up really fast and stay solid on the road. I am very happy with the way they handle. Be interesting to see how long they last.
