I'll send my entry in this weekend I reckon.

Re-cycled showed me a wedding pic of 4-skins today and Oscar I understand you were the best man - would we ever doubt that?

I was the best man.
There was little or no choice when you consider the calibre of the other men in the room.

So I rolled my WR out the garage today about 8am coz I needed to go get a WOF to make sure its all legal for the CCA. The weather man said no worries, there might be showers later this afternoon, so I'm in my best dirt bike clothes i.e. jeans, sports shoes and off I go. Well stuff the weather man I'm a few kms from home and it pisses down this morning and still is - you know that fine very wet rain.

Passed WOF no sweat, but now I'm back home, jacket & bike dripping in the garage and I'm walking around with a wet crotch in my jeans - fanatastic.

I'm only telling you this to bump the thread eh. Make sure you sign up and we'll see you at the CCA :2thumbsup.

Mate give up the steak and eat mince for a while

Child number three will be arriving before the year's out, so mince is all we got, man.

and you're a Welly boy, forget the tent, stay and keep the missus warm and just ride over to Plimmerton School in the morning ready for the ride

Well, 4skins made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and then he dragged me home "the back road" last night, so my arm's duly twisted. The missus has approved my day-pass, so I'm all set.

that's what I'll be doing.

What, keeping my missus warm?

Bump, mainly cause I felt like it.

Now, who's travelling down from the metropolis to the country village?

Routes, plans and possible meeting places?

Any takers?

Just to clarify that, I have a plan that involves a few places I want to ride and am planning on doing that solo and at my own pace but wouldn't mind meeting the odd body at various places, preferably ones associated with the imbibment of beer.

Part one of that plan is overnighting thursday at Howards Lodge in National Park
Part two is meeting others (Clint, Rosie?) at Ohakune lunchtime friday

Only if the kids are at their grandmother's.

I will be travelling down with a couple of others.
I plan on meeting some at Ohakune. I will be hopefully making a detour or three to muddy up the bike and arrive like an adventurer should...lol
If that can't be done, at least roll around in a puddle or two between Ohakune and Wellington.

Just a quick note for anyone who still has to get a fire extinguisher: I just got a 500gram one from Bunnings in NaeNae (presumably all Bunnings stores will have the same deal?) on special for $18:2thumbsup

Crisis management

Having searched most of Auckland trying to find a smallish extinguisher, the best place was the marine shops, they seem to love small 300 -400 gram extinguishers for some reason.
As a side note, none of the local extinguisher dealers / manufacturers actually make anything less than 500 grams.

The curse of the bargain hunter!

I'll get one of those for the KTM then, saves swapping them over.

Some of use canty crew have decided that getting back into Chch at 2200 on the Sunday night is a bit rough (seems we are getting old or something) so we have decided to bring the homeward bound sailing back to 1035. This means that doing the Pram track or similar on the Sunday morning is out. Is there any of the local Welly bunch that are willing to act as guides for a ticky tour on the Friday arvo? We get to Welly around 1300 on the Friday and will need to deposit gear somewhere etc so we should be good to go around 1430ish. I'm sure we can find and have ago at the Pram track by ourselves but it would be cool to go for a ride with the local yokels before the :apint: starts

On the note on Spark arrestors. I have no idea whether my bike is fitted with one or not (Only had the bike a couple of weeks so I'm a bit of a newbie to MX). It is the stock KTM EXC muffler but I can't find any info stamped on it anywhere.
I don't really want to turn up and find I can't ride so is there any way I can check without pulling apart a perfectly good muffler? or is there some way of rigging up a temporary solution to satisfy the authorities?

El Scooto was scratching his head till yesterday evening as well about where to get some mesh from to make a temporary spark arrestor. Got to the $2 shop or the Warehouse and get yourself a large food sieve (see pic). Make sure it has steel mesh not alloy. Then go of to your local hardware store and get a jubilee clamp (screw up type hose clamp) that will fit over your exhaust can. Cut said mesh out of plastic frame, bend to shape (want it like a cone pointing backwards from the can) and clamp onto can and ya done :niceone:

Stick a welding rod up the muffler.
How far will it go?

The exit has a about 90 degree bend downwards(it enters the end of the muffler at about 45 degrees) so I don't think the welding rod would go very far... pics attached(hopefully)

How far will it go?Well it started to go up inside, then there was this blinding flash and wouldn't go any further. Couldn't pull it out either and the welder which was attached to the only welding rod I could find was making loud buzzing/humming noises....:buggerd:

ok, I made that shit up:lol:

That's fine.
The field test for a spark arrestor is to poke a stick or welding rod up the muffler. If it don't go all the way to the end, you pass.

Indeed a subject well done before chap, Trust me on that one........... (Hides head in shame)

A good priced set of tyres can be obtained from http://www.lmsimports.co.nz/products.php?cat=2

The E-09's are about $260 inc freight for the pair so pretty affordable and they last about 4-5000km mixed road/gravel.

Tell Rob at LMS that Duncan from Tokoroa sent you and he will get them to you quick smart!

Dry conditions no problem but not in the wet unless you're really good.

What size rear wheel? I picked up anew 4.60x17 for the KLR from http://www.biketreadz.co.nz/ for $50. Unknown "Deestone" brand from Thailand, but its only got to last one day. Round, black and got nice big knobs,

I love MT60's and have run them on both my motards but there just wasn't enough traction in the dirt when it got wet.
My brother however seemed not to notice the loss of traction and punted it wherever he wanted and I was struggling to keep up on my knobblie shod XR250.

Spare tubes and tool kit....

Pack rack and bag ordered....

One thing i asked for at the bike shop here was a few spare chain links after the Kawhia chain link - tyre issue... But they could not match it up, It's not 520 or 525... They had no idea... Nothing would fit that they had..!!

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?..........

I've done it a few times on the DR200. Wouldn't have wanted to heave a GSA through it, but it's certainly passable by a n00b on a little bike with trail tyres.

Man, am I generous, you mess up my motel room and there will be hell to pay (or at least a couple of beers).
I expect a full report on this track as I'm planning on doing it on the way north on sunday, so, if anyones needing to do it then, feel free to join in, I need people that can carry and push.....

On a completely different subject, I understand Plimmerton boatclub is the venue for friday night, is everyone going there or somewhere else? I'm quite excited to actually meet people I have invested a good part of a year insulting. :bleh:

If it helps, the 5 series chains are 5/8ths of an inch pitch (16mm) and the 20 or 25 refers to the width of the roller, the 20 being 2/8ths wide (6.3mm) and the 25 being 2.5/8ths wide (8mm).
Measure and all will be revealed.
I've got a clapped out 520 chain with link lying around here somewhere I can bring with me if that helps.

The old fulla speaks the truth.
Commonly referred to as the "law of eights".
Fatty the scrambler also runs a 525. Most of the wholesalers should be able to supply a split link.

Pub is over the road from the BP service station on the main street.

Different manufacturers and different models of chain have different pin sizes and side plate thickness's. For a long term repair you really should have the correct joining link for the chain (see the side plates of the chain they should have the manufacture, model and size stamped on them). Failing that just get a link that works but treat it as a very temporary repair.

The one on the south side of the main road through town.

My plan on reaching Plimmerton will be to set up camp & then mosey down to the boating club. There you can get registered and stick together the route sheet over a beer. Might get a feed there too. Don't forget your scissors & sellotape!

Hey all...
I am meeting a few guys on Saturday morning for a warm up ride around Coromandel. Sticking to the metal roads and hitting the pub for lunch etc.
Picked up my new 990s Adventure yesterday. I did just a couple of hundred Km on it and it is now in the garage under cover.
Decided to use the KTM 640 Adventure for the CCA as I am getting MT21 put on it next week and it will be more fun riding that in the mud, dirt etc it if is a little greasy.
I certainly will be keen for some activities on Sunday and have even thought about the 42 Traverse on the way home or similar.
Catch up with you all in Plimmerton. I will be setting up camp, tenting it, doing it the real adventure way excepting of course the drinkies and the grub!

I'm a 990 owner too Jamie and I hate to say it but I think you'd be better off to bring the 640 (oh the luxury of choice eh).

It's been raining quite a bit in the last week and parts of the course that were a breeze 3 weeks ago have suddenly become a lot harder. Several farm sections that were intended for ALL riders have been re-designated 'Challenge' sections. I got around everywhere yesterday in the rain on my half worn TKCs but I think some of the tracks are gonna cut up rough up with 100 odd bikes on them.

The 7 day forecast (http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nzni&noofdays=7) looks good from Tuesday onwards but I expect the ground will not dry much before Saturday.

Knobbly tyres will be a must.

I'm a 990 owner too Jamie and I hate to say it but I think you'd be better off to bring the 640 (oh the luxury of choice eh).

Hi John, thanks for the info.....
I will put the 640 through its paces, but give the rush of blood and the night before debating whether......
The 990 might win over. Trouble is, there is another coming with us on a 990 and it would be a shame to have him on his own....BUT, wouldn't it be funny if I was to get around no hassle and he got in the poo...lol
If the weather stays dry this coming week I might succumb! One drop of rain down Welly Way and it will be the very capable 640....

Wonder if I can get down there, do the ride and then fill the tank??...lol

I knew he had hurt himself. He was quiet and holding his chest when putting down the tent. Never said anything though.
Got my new KTM 990 the other day, just debating as to whether it goes to Wellington for the ride or I take the KTM 640. Decisions, decisions....
Weather will be the deciding factor.

Yummm....New bikes rock eh! Well Mark, I would love to ride the 990 to Wellington, and I would do the CCA on the 640- thats just me thou......:niceone:

Either wayz you will enjoy:niceone:

Yep. That is right. I am gearing it up for a good time on the 640....
The ride down will be fun, the 640 is still capable of licence breaking speeds but what I am heading south for?
YES! The CCA! I want enjoy it, ride it and finish it. I don't want to show off a the 990, everyone knows they are a big bike and if I was riding though Russia...SURE, I will take it.
I have the next best thing.....

Are the 'Challenge' sections graded or is it just 'Challenge' section or easy route?

Doing the ride two up will limit me a bit, Had i been running one up i would not think twice about chucking the Dakar at any challenge section...

Wonder how many challenge sections the wife will be happy getting thrown into before she walks and i get to continue by doing all the challenge sections....

About 50mm, ish... the container it fits into is 65mm wide internally (click clack box)
You have to cut them out yourself to make the roll from A4 sheets so you can trim a bit if it is critical.

Approximately 65mm and 75mm respectively, unless my steel rule shrunk on the boat over here.

The strips are one third of an A4 sheet, no? That would make them 70mm wide. How much margin between that and the actual size of the diagram?

If your going to be pedantic, A4 is 207mm wide, so not quite 70mm!
I've only done one of these route sheet thingies before so am not the expert but they easily fitted into the click clack so maybe it's 4 strips per sheet? It was 2 years ago, and I don't recall accurately.....

Sorry, not being a pedant, just accurate. ISO A4 is 210 w x 297 L
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A4_paper_size.
The route sheets I've done in the past have been 3 per sheet.
Warehouse Stationary sell some cheap paper trimmers (less than $20) which will cut a lot neater and (more importantly quicker) than scissors. Means you can get to the strips assembled and get to the bar earlier...

Hi Gang. Myself, Brett and Murray will be there at Ohakune 1230-1300 ish...
We plan to head around Whakamaru, the back of the lake and down to Ohakune via National Park Road.
As to the route from Ohakune we are all open to suggestions but if it takes us off the beaten track all the better.
I will have a looksie at the map and see what route we can take.
Haven't got to be in Plimmerton until 5ish anyway so there is plenty of time.
Catch you all tomorrow somewhere round the roads and looking forward to meeting you all.

Got my route sheet off 4skins last night so I'll have a crack at putting it together tonight. He'd said to me earlier how he's made the middle strip wider so with the print margins the two side ones are equal width. I'll see how it goes but it didn't seem like a smart idea for us with the nice compact click clacks because trimming the margins off in the past has always given me a good sized strip.

See you all Saturday if not at the briefing on Friday night at the boat club.

I realised last night, examining a copy of the 2006 CCA route sheet I found (don't ask) that that's what I should have done when assembling my 2008 sheets. Like a tit, I cut the margins off both sides, then cut the middle strip a couple of mm narrower than marked because "bless John, he's made the middle strip a bit wider than the others."

D'uh, amn't I clever?

Fitted my front rim lock last night, ride to work says it's nicely balanced. I'll do the rear tonight. I may or may not fit the new clutch hub that WMC have for me. One way or t'other, I should be set.

You definitely coming Sels1?

Pick up your pack and you'll get the route strips plus a map which is a bit dark and only in black and white so not so easy to look at but it looks like we are doing a few of the usual haunts like Belmont Park, Long Gully Makara area, Dry Creek Quarry, Rallywoods, Puketiro and Battle Hill.

I've done a well over due oil change on my bike and loaded some gear in my bag, put the route sheet holder and my GPS on, lubed the chain and its looking sweet.

See you all soon - I'll drop down to the boat club for the briefing - might even wear a KB shirt so you South islanders will recognise me - looking forward to meeting you SI boys.

The event was limited to 200 I believe. Many of the tracks were through Council and Regional Council parks which are normally off limits to motorbikes (well done to John F for getting the approvals). It was quite amusing riding past "NO MOTORBIKE" signs and seeing the look on the faces of the few poor sods who thought they were out for a quiet stroll through the park walkways.
