hmmm very interesting indeed...
though I'd say I'm mostly the same online as offline...
just that I tend to go online when I'm in a not-so-savoury mood (whatever mood it may be that's not positive)
the internet tends to be an escape, and hence people catch the brunt of something they shouldn't (and usually has nothing to do with them)
**SORRY GUYS!!!!!**
heh, just my two cents of realisation of why AJ is like AJ... ^_^ "

Personally, I was raised not to attack someone verbally for the sake of an argument...whether or not I'm in front of them or not hardly matters. So, I'm the same in real life as I am on line.
In my books, if someone has to resort to insults to make their point, then a lack a smarts is involved and the argument is void and I lose interest almost immediately...
Too many people confuse debating with arguing...a healthy polite debate will generally end up with both parties being smart enough to agree to disagree, and it can be very stimulating for both parties :niceone:...

A few years ago I did a research project on the subject. Took me months and I even went to the trouble of categorising all the different ways people flame (fallacy debate).
The New Scientist guys opinions reflect pretty much what I found. Most people, even in local forums like this, seem to think they are anonymous and will say stuff they would never dare say in person. That was certainly what Blackbuell and I noted the first time I showed up at the Auckland post run pub and challenged those there to speak the same way in person that they had online.
The silence was deafening............................

So true! Too often it quickly ends up as "I don't like what you said so fuck you".
Kinda inevitable when passion in a subject is involed. Guess that's what Godwin's law comes into it right?

Yes, when I was a skinny 15 year old it was a lot harder and I got into a few fights for it. That hasn't happened for a long time now that I'm 184cm and close to 100kg.
But regardless, have the strength of your convictions. This might be an online forum but you're also likely to meet your opponents.

And I am a very firm believer in the fact that it doesn't have to be inevitable...
I just don't see what can be gained by trying desperately to prove a point, when the other person does not want (or cannot) comprehend your point of view...
What Idle is referring to is a little different though...he doesn't suffer fools, and so doesn't let them get away with a stupid argument.

So the first statement suggests you know what it is like to be 'in the right' yet still get bullied?? The second statement suggests that instead of learning some humility, you just decided to join the ranks of the intimidaters.
Bit sad, really, for a grown man.

Righto, so...can you beat someone up for me? :D
Just kidding...Funnily enough, there is one person on here who has quite obviously taken a very strong dislike to me from the very start of my appearance on KB...Never met him, and he keeps on baiting me, but honnestly, I cannot be bothered as the mental capacity is that of an amoeba...a bit like arguing with a jelly fish really!

Nope, the first suggests that even as a skinny kid I stood up and said what was on my mind.
The second says that OTHER PEOPLE generally don't pick on me in person ; it NEVER said I pick on others. You're just leaping to conclusions like a lemming leaping after some other lemming.
What humility was there to learn? If I'm wrong I'll say so. If all my detractors can do is attack my person instead of my arguments, I just laugh at them.
My attitude hasn't changed, only my height and bulk.

No, I'm not a bully and I've only ever 'beaten up' those who've swung at me first.
Regardless of your size, be strong. I'm sure you'll find that others would step in if needs be. As for anonymous people here with childish grudges: yes, there are plenty.

Of course you expect us to accept YOUR opinion of what constitutes posturing.
From what I've seen, many here are often sadly mistaken and the other is merely expressing a viewpoint that they disagree with but can't effectively counter.
You or they might think it's posturing but it is usually just a good argument that those lacking skills find difficult to debate.
It smacks of the tall poppy crap.

Now he has accepted that whilst tilting at windmills may be an honourable mission, in reality it just fucks off the miller.
