After 2 years and 30k on the NC30, no accidents. Nothing ever going wrong with the bike.
I think it's time to upgrade to something a little bigger. And to the fact the people are starting to pick on me about the cosmetics of the bike. Even though the bike is mechanically sound (and sounds mint too). I知 going to sell the NC30 and buy a VTR-SP1.
I知 not just some punk arse kid (anymore) that wants a fast bike, I think I have earned the right to ride a 1000cc sports bike.
I have been riding since I was 17, so it's not like I don't know how to handle a bike, yah know?
How long did you guys take to get to a bigger bike?
And what CC ratings did you go from?
I went from 3 x 250's to a 400 and then the 1000 :)

Excellent choice!!! SP1 is a lovely bike.
I have to admit to being a bit apprehensive about entering a thread started by the infamous NC30 called "Big Toys".
I had 3x 250s, 2x400s, 1x750, 1x600, and 1x 850.
I've hit the stage in life where I don't care what I ride, so long as I have a ride.
You have fun on that, ya hear?

when i started i had a ER125 and NO idea on how to ride it, had the bike shop drop it off at home...mother spat the dummy! the old man said things that even made me blush..learn't to ride on the front lawn...in the middle of Richmond (nelson) feel off a couple (yer right ) times, then off into the big wide world, the bike got me to Auckland and back!!!
then i found out that if i had a bigger bike i could go even faster!!!..in came a brand new GS 450e, 70k latter and a couple of speeding fines i got all cruisy and got the CX500 sports, (bro had the twin shock 78 modle) and promply ran rings round him, to his discust! hahahaha then i thought that a brand new GSX750 esd was the best thing out there..but then i saw the next year that the XJ 900 was even better.... got married, sold the bike, separated and my best mate(now!! hahaha) told me to look after his XJ650 Turbo while is over seas... have crashed on every bike and walked away with the pride hurt but learn't what not to do on , ICE, trying to keep up with a better ride (everyone else), what happens when the front/rear tyre goes flat, when it is a good time to stop when the car in front is also stopped..that was imbarrising... rush hr in CHCH hahahah,

good choice!! not really a honda kinda guy but they are a useful piece of kit. just be careful when buying they do have a few gremlins in the timing and induction. nothing that a quick read on the net wouldn't fix.
my history is a bit rocky, started riding in 1999 i have had 5X 250's 1x 600 and the 1X 750. yeah... about the 250's, just say i was a slow learner

Started when I was 15 with a 125, and progressevly (or regressed) moved on to bigger and wider things - i'm now riding a 1400, and it has plenty of everything, and rides it's self pretty much, I just tag along on the seat and point the bars in the direction i think I should be going - :2thumbsup

Hmmm SP1, might be a bit different to the NC30. Nice bike, and a good size if you're not a big person.
I've had my bike licence for 29 years, started off on a 125, have ridden most engine configurations to 900cc, but the 500 is the biggest capacity bike I've owned.
Always been a bit scared of those extra maintenance (especially tyres)costs, higher insurance etc.
Hope it all goes well. :2thumbsup

Both!! One of the reasons I like the GS is because it's compact, much in the modern sports bike way. Getting on a bit for clip ons though.
Besides there's something a bit surreal about seeing someone tall or a bit portly settling themselves into/onto a sportsbike. Must be bloody uncomfortable.
Enjoy the SP. Cheers, Paul.

Don't be too worried about up sizing to a litre - the difference in required skill to stay safe doesn't change much... but if you REALLY want to learn how to kick butt of smart arse guys, be quite familiar with wringing every last bit of performance out of the NC30 before giving it the flick.
Many people seem to upgrade to more cc's so they think they can go faster, but what it seems to do is make them more lazy - they go slower in the corners because they can go a bit faster on the straights. I stayed on the ZXR250 for a couple of years even tho I had my full and it made me a much quicker rider because I couldn't rely on the engine to do all the catch up work when chasing bigger bikes. MR and Two smoker are good examples of having to make up for small CC's with better cornering skill.
So upgrade if you want to, but remember you will almost certainly get a bit lazier on the corners so make sure you're quite certain the NC30 isn't enough anymore if you want to make the most of a bigger bike. (does that make any sense at all?)

I致e gone up the scales & down them again, I always figured I would get more out of learning to ride a smaller bike first. Well, not practising what I preach the RD350 (with 250 stickers) was too much for me & although it never bit me, it tried. The GSX250 I bought to get a licence taught me way more. Later after getting a 750 (after a couple of 500/550s) I also bought a 250 to comute on & had more fun on that dick地 around.
Much later after more 550 & 1000 I bought a RG50 as a roadbike & loved it (rode it to the cold kiwi 6 times!) but had a bigger bike too.
I thoroughly suggest owning as many bikes as you can possibly afford & anything else that catches your fancy + maybe one or two more.

they go slower in the corners because they can go a bit faster on the straights.
Yeah, but this is assuming that you spend alot of time trying to keep up, dare I say racing bigger bikes. That really isn't the safest way to ride, especially on the street. Also, if you have to, isn't it a better idea to be slightly lazier, or slower in the corners, and go a little faster on the straight? It's certainly safer that way. Obviously, this is for safety rather than rider improvement.
Besides there's something a bit surreal about seeing someone tall or a bit portly settling themselves into/onto a sportsbike. Must be bloody uncomfortable.

Started riding in December last year on the RG150 (still have it) After 6 months i rode my first R6 (loved it) and a K2 GSX-R 600 inbetween then and now.... Have also ridden a CBR1100XX which was the easiest bike i have ridden (except for the 3rd gear wheelies) and then bought my ZXR400L8 at the start of this month, that was the most difficult bike i have ridden, but i enjoy ringing its neck and throwing it into the corners (being careful of the rear suspension which is bloody hard)....
Just waiting for my K5 GSX-R600 to arrive and im going to have fun then on all three of my bikes..... Now all i need is my full licence

Ok... no one else has said it so I will................. Dont under estamate a big block V2, they are nothing like a 1000cc 4cyl. A V2 dosent have the top end that a 4cyl does but sure as hell makes up for it down low eg: my MG 1100i off the start line is the 1st into the 1st corner at Ruapuna, then every bastard passes me, another eg: my mates Hayabusa is a easier bike to ride than my V2 turbo was and the Guzzi and VTR for that mater.
But like others have said ride it with the due resepct and you will love it, hell who wants a 4cyl anyway they belong in cars..... ohh and sound like a strangled cat too...
BTW, I started riding at 15yrs with a 80cc then it went 125, 250, 500, 750, 500, 500 turbo, V750, 1100, and 1000.
so thats 21 yrs from 80 too 1000cc but that dosent mean that ya cant jump straight up there.

Mate.... theres no way that I can agree with that aye, a 900 blade is the more dosile bike out of the blade and SP1 they are both so different to ride.
Like I said IMHO a GSXR 1300 Hayabusa is easier to ride than a eg:TL1000.... at least thats how I've found it and I've raced both.
I'm not saying the Blade is a pussys bike... far from it, but a 4 is more predictable than a twin.

I had a NC30 for about 3 years. It was a great bike, and although I had a few troubles with the regulator it was very reliable.
I recently made the move to something bigger. I was waying up between a 1000 and a 600. Since I use the bike for commuting in Traffic as well as weekend riding I wnet for the 600 as the 1000 would just be a bit big and heavy for lane splitting etc.
I went for the GSXR600 over the R6 in the end. No regrets, mean bike with a heap of power. Most modern 600's are actually lighter than the NC30.

Oh... Bugger, why am I bothering... I mean, wtf would I know, I just ride turgid old pieces of munted out shit that have about as much in common with an SP1 as does a Honda 50... Christ, the Guzzi is the most modern bike I've ever owned and I would not recognise an OHC if it fell on me.
In fact.... Wait until you see what I think I bought when I was pissed as a rat at the Guzzi rally... It's even older, more munted and slower than the Mk2.. Ya hoo

but a 4 is more predictable than a twin.
You reckon ? I would have thought the power delivery was more predictable on a twin due to the firing sequence.
Response to others
- the front end of an SP-1 is a sexy as ......an 04 Aprilia Factory. I.e very.
- Im tall and have no problems with the size of the bike - having long arms also makes less of a stretch to the low bars on sportsbikes.
- Ive never heard an SP-1 with Yoshies, but Im pretty happy with the sound and performance of my Neptunz.
- Ive never had any problems with induction or timing other than having fitting a power commander to complement the K&N and Neptunz.
- who says small bikes are more fun ? You just have to know how to handle a "real", I mean big bike.
BTW NC30 - there are plenty of SP-1's in the motorcycle trader for around $14000 that haven't been raced and look mint - can't believe that a couple of them have pack racks fitted - (sacrilege).
See the SP-5 is now $22995 rather than $28995..........
Have you ridden one yet ? I know a real nice guy who may offer you a go if ya ask nicely ?

I really hate pack racks!! And having them on sportsbike, what the???? :angry2:
I kinda wanted a raced one, cause then yah know it goes like a cut cat.. well that's what I think..
Otherwise you might end up buying one off a dude the broke the bike in like a kid learning how to ride a plastic trike.

Who's that??? :D

And theres one now in the local suzuki shop, cant recall the price though.
Now I know the diferances between the SP1 and 2 & 3's but how about the SP5? whats the deal there, I heard after the SP3 that that was the end of the V2.

Price is agreed, money is being found, stunned amazement amoungst the turgid proles will be forthcomming.... This things so freaking stupid the Starlet will refuse to share a shed with it!
;-)
Well I did warn you all I was thinking 'new bike', even asked for suggestions and me being me, I bought something else.... Just be patient, it needs a lot of work and I need to finish the Trophy first OK!
BUT THIS will blow your minds once XJ/Frosty goes check it out for me!

There are a couple of SP-5's in the latest motorcycle trader, dunno what the diff is, they all look the same except for the colour scheme.

I think there is a weight difference and slight set up differences. But i think the sp-1 is the sexiest bike in the whole world. Deano can attest to that cause he watched me drool (not over but very close to) his bike at the waikato rally

- the front end of an SP-1 is a sexy as ......an 04 Aprilia Factory. I.e very.
umm... you know what? I am a MAD RSV fan, I've wanted one ever since they came out in 98... but that new 04 front end really is a bit heinous. Its ok from a distance but up close it looks like someone jammed an icecream lid down either side. Its a real ugly stain on what is otherwise a dead sexy machine.. and the same goes for my thoughts on the SP's. I have no problem with the rest of the bike but no amount of ram-air mechanical advantage can make up for that look.
