Ok, so i've bought a new bike.
Can anyone recommend a decent insurance company for motorcycles that doesn't cost a fortune?

Try State, they were cheapest by far and I didn't have a current policy with them.
I got quotes from several inc bike only insurers, state were easily $400 under next lowest.
Most have 24hr or online quote service. Main thing is to shop around, yellow pages search will pull up most.

State are fine - until you need them to pay out..
I got a good deal through Kiwibike insurance - saved 1/3 off what I was paying with AMI previously for the herd, with better cover.
Jetboy on this site flogs insurance as well. Bikes are something that it is worth trying brokers for,a s most insurance comapnies won't touch them, or charge heaps. There was a big variation in costs when I compared.

I second Kiwibike Insurance. Owned and operated by bikers, so they have more than a passing idea of what you are talking about, and have online insurance etc on the website so you can do the bizzo at three in the morning if you feel like it. www.kiwibike.co.nz

I tried to insure my Gixer with Star, 3 days after paying the first premium on my credit card, they sent me a letter threatening to cut off the insurance if I didn't pay the full amount. Got pissed off, the people were nice enough about it, but the hassle factor was huge, so I pulled the plug. Insured through Classic Cover in Hamiltion, nice people, but I've never made a claim on a bike so it's hard to know what the insurance company is like.
Oh, stay away from AMI, my house got burgled and they put an investigator on me, ended up paying out after I threw the toys:spanking:... Fucking animals... I call it their Frown Campaign... Think about it...

Hi there
Thanks to those who recommended Kiwibike Insurance.
I have just changed my insurance over to them. The premium is $466 a year cheaper than State over the 4 bikes. I took out a multibike cover on 3 of them and a classic cover on the other bike. Nice people to deal with too.
I have been with State Insurance for about 30 years with various insurances and this year they changed my bike insurances to comprehensive cover from standard cover. They upped the premiums by about $100 on each one and then to add insult to injury they put my excess up to $1,000 on each insurance. I had $300 excesses on the cheaper bikes and $750.00 on the other two. It worked out to insure a bike worth $3,000 was going to have a $1,000 excess (bit pointless having insurance really).
So far so good, and just because I was p............d off with State I took my household and car insurance to AA.

We insure all of our bikes through STAR. An awesome company to deal with. You may find cheaper but as the saying goes:
"You Get What You Pay For"
Any of our customers bikes that have been damaged are usually fixed and back on the road in two to three weeks, dependant on parts availability. We have got a bike here at the moment that was insured with a
"Cheap Company" and it is still waiting to be sorted three months later.
Feel free to contact me for a price.

+1 for Star's services :)
Have spoken to Kiwibike too and was impressed by their quote, but stuck with star as they've stuck with me through a disputes tribunal process.

Please don't think that "best price = best deal"

Not State/NZI/IAG as they are the same group and will not pay out if they can help it, or dont pay the full amount.
Two years of getting the runaround and 2k off what they should have, and had a contract to pay.
I'm with Protector for the Daytona and AMI for the rest.
