TSS (http://www.tssmotorcycles.co.nz/) Red Baron (http://www.redbaron.co.nz/) National Hill Climb Championship 2008

That's right players - Cliff Hanger Promotions has secured the National Hill Climb Championship 2008.

15th and 16th March 2008.
The Cliff Hanger Hill Climb in Gladstone is the place to be for any 'would be' pretenders to the throne.

Present King of the Cliff Hanger is local legend, Drew Mair, although he will have some tough competition in 2008 from the likes of Jay Lawrence, Derek McAdam, Glen Williams and...........a champion Aussie Road Racer, all of whom have expressed interest in competing.

There is one catch - one of the criteria for the Cliff Hanger Hill Climb to achieve Championship status is that there be a minimum of 6 MNZ Full Competition Race Licence holders entering each of the Cliff Hanger Classes (up to 600cc, and 601cc and over).

I can think of half a dozen guys keen to contest the open class, but the 'up to 600cc' class has struggled in the past.

I would like to guage overall interest in this event - so please reply and let me know what class you would be keen to enter and also if you have a full MNZ licence ?

Cliff Hanger Classes: (Prizemoney and championship titles)

- Up to 600cc
- 601cc and over Sponsored by KTL Motorcycles (http://www.ktlbikes.co.nz/)

Support Classes: (no prizemoney or championship titles - just a medal and bragging rights)

- F1 (Sponsored by Beveridge Locksmith Services) (http://www.beveridges.co.nz/mobile-locksmith-wellington.html)
- F2 (Sponsored by Continental Tyres) (http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/start/index_uv.html) - there are also a set of new Conti's for the fastest person up the hill wearing Conti's)
- F3
- Pre 89
- BEARS (Sponsored by Motomart/Ducati) (www.motomart.co.nz)
- Streetstock
- GP125
- Motards (Sponsored by Quasimoto Motorcycle Accessories) (http://quasimoto.co.nz)
- Sidecars

For any young racers wanting to get some exposure and their name in Australian Motorcycle News, there will be a feature on next year's hill climb, with tons of pics.

So come on you under 600ccs, now's your chance! I'm looking forward to a cracking good day here, and if you're nice to me I'll be sure to mention how good looking and intelligent you are.

By the way Deano, I expect the media will be getting perks? Bribery and flattery accepted here. . .

I'd like to enter but have no idea what class to go in. I'm certainly not good enough for the main Cliffhanger class. Plus I'll be doing allot of the timings and reports for the day. Any suggestions Deano? Hopefully by then someone else will be able to use the computer while I do my runs.

Are the buckets as quick as a streetstock bike ? I hate to be a party pooper but I think a streetstock bike would be the limit - Saturday fun day might be a possibility. I would have to discuss with the committee closer to the date.

Deano

Well done on securing this event as a national race meeting.

Just a thought though, will cliffhanger have some kind of amateur event / class / run for bikes in road trim or do we need to take it up a notch and get a race license for the event. I'd still be keen on a class where you can ride your bike there , have a few goes at the hill and ride home.

I'm not sure about making the jump to a full on race class. (and my riding isn't up to scratch)

Otherwise is a 750 twin able to compete in the 600 class like they used to in Supersport and do the old rules in terms of engine mods still apply ? (Bike was build to 2001 rules ) or should I be looking at "bears" class

Saturday is fun/practice day so only a Day Licence is required.

Sunday - the support classes are aimed more for the amateur 'racers', and again, only a Day Licence is required.

You could enter the same classes as Flame above.

F1, F2 or BEARS.

You also realise the hyosung cound be used in the streetstock class....?

Its actually a really good idea having that in the support classes because aswell as having 150 streetstock guys turning up it gives a home to anyone on a 250 4 stroke a place to get out and give it a go!

I think I'm going to be encouraging a few mates to get out there and try it, that will probably lead to a few more racing nutters being created tho

Guess the normal rules about sump wire and stuff appply tho? no worries sorting little things like that tho.

If you have trouble getting the numbers required in Bears f1 or f2 , I could look into getting a comp licence to make the numbers up. (Would need to join some kind of motorcycle club with affiliation I guess).

Do Supersport equivalency rules apply to the up to 600cc class? That would make the 748 eligible.

Is the top end speed similar cause the hill climb is pretty flat out ?

No one has ever been turned away before because of the type or size of bike, but the greater the speed differential, the more careful we have to be with run order.

We are limited to about 40 bikes on each day, so if next year proves to be very popular, it will just be a case of first in first served - early entry may be required to ensure a spot.

Odd, I wonder why?

If it's because they think they couldn't go that fast, it's a bit silly. Only one person can win anyway; if nobody turned up unless they were positive they had a go at the title it'd be a sad and lonely day. I know I wouldn't be as fast as Mr Craig or Drew along there, but WGAF.

I was expecting a much twistier course than that, honking along that road would be a right bucket of giggles.

No - it's more because the road frightens them - not that there is anything wrong with that - it can be a scary road at speed. There isn't much room for error.

Some I have spoken to don't trust themselves to ride within their limits up it either.

Yeah, it does look scary BUT if I had a bike to ride I would love to ride it at near 100% of MY ability and I know that if did then I would be pumped! I know that im never gonna be fast but pushig my own abilities further than I normally would is what gives me the biggest buzz!!!

This is a shame,

This year was my first time on the hill. I had good advice by a fellow rider that (Yamaha RD 2 stroke rider) said go up each time as smooth as possible, Try not to brake on the first time up to learn the flow and ride at a pace you feel confident at.

I kept this in mind and on the practice day , each run improved by 2 seconds. On the later runs for me the hill was starting to flow and I was able to increase speed and brake later. While the hill was a real buzz I still felt that I was in complete control.

I'll never be able to ride or push as hard as the front runners. For me it was the enjoyment of give the hill a go without have to worry about cars coming the other way or loss of license. It was also a buzz to see my times come down each run.

If you thinking about this event, give it a go , yeah the video looks scary at that kind of pace, but your ride up the hill at your pace doesn't need to be. And you'll still see 200kmh plus on a few sections.:2thumbsup

I beg to differ. You are applying an personal artificial value to people's achievements. Just because Tony Samson isn't Aaron Slight, and Deano isn't Carl Fogarty, that doesn't make their showing to date on that hill road of any less value nor is it indicative of any deficiency in the relative merits of their skills.

The only way it will even get close to the Mini-TT International standing you seem to think it should have prior to getting any publicity is for it to ... be.... publicised.

Widely.

Thank you AMCN.

Dude - Drew Mair beat Warren Turner, who has held the title for a while and raced at the Isle of Man - he says the Cliff Hanger is the closest thing in NZ - Who else should get to hold the title ? A South Island Club had it last year - a 58 second run I understand. Ours is 2.13s.

Does Rossi not riding Isle of Man detract from the qudos and status of the event ?

Maybe the top NZ road racers aren't 'keen'.

Stroud says he is busy testing in Aussie.

Shirriffs said it's not his thing.

I haven't heard back from Sam Smith - (an e-mail and a phone message weeks ago).

Jay Lawrence was there in 07 and is coming back in 08.
Glen Williams is keen.
Dereck McAdam has expressed interest.
Aussie Mick Fraser (Australian 2006 Formula Xtreme Champion) is keen to come over for 08.

The fabulous Mair brothers - maybe not that well known yet,.......YET......

Would it be better if AMCN had down played it ? Ahhhhh no.

You hit a bit of a nerve there Gazza. ;)

The biggest impression I got from the article was that it was a great piece of road and the competitors were all down to earth, hard case characters - it certainly didn't play up any undeserved glamour. Nowhere else I know of in NZ can you go nuts for over 2 minutes on a piece of closed road.

Well it sure as shit aint going to be a R1 ridden by a sasquatch either bro'

Careful there, sasquatch's are known to be bad tempered creatures.
Being a a race into the back block hills of the Wairarapa you may need to take heed as you are entering one of their known habitats.

And word on the street is the black R1 is pretty fearsome too. Don't turn your back for a second!

And it worked 1st time? Cripes...that's unusual for my hacking. If the server supports php I have a more spiffy interactive version that stores markers and other details in a database. In plain English, I want to see markers with mouseover's that show where everyone has crashed...lol

A dude went over the cliff hanger corner (#8) in 03 or 04 - he got a nice helicopter ride to the hospital. I'm not aware of any other crashes. Although an MV was 'dropped' this year while turning in gravel, and a motard slipped over in the wet grass in the pits.

Please support our sponsors !!

There has been a few bike thefts lately - Anyone need a lock and chain ?- see Beveridge Locksmith Services on Queens Drive Lower Hutt.

Looking at buying a Ducati ? See the new Motomart premises on Rutherford Street, Lower Hutt.

After some tyres - have you tried Continentals ? They do road, sport and race attacks, tested and proven by our own Jay Lawrence (JayRacer37).

There are still some classes that have no sponsors as yet so contact me if you would like to support this great event.

The support classes are simply support classes.

There are only 2 championship classes, as per MNZ rules.

You can enter the 2 championship classes if you have an MNZ full competition licence.

We need 6 racers in each of the 2 championship classes in order for it to be a championship.

Hope that has cleared it up.

Anyone from *Auckland/Hamilton/Tauranga going who's got space for a bike in their van/trailer? I've got a 2 bike trailer (actually a 3 bike one but it'd struggle with 3 faired bikes) but my car isn't up to the job of pulling 2 bikes to wellywood.

*I can get my bike over to these places if it's a hassle coming out to the sticks.

Probably...lol. It scares me silly compared to the 400. I've done less than 20kms on it in the past 4 months [it's been sick] so i'll be nervous as hell. Yes, another one for my excuse book.

I'm gonna assume I can find someone else who's driving down & just enter.

Since it's a public road I presume it's rather bumpy so are softish road bike settings the order of the day?

James Deuce

I had a good look at the road a couple of weeks ago and it was suffering from hideous tar bleed and the seal had peeled off in the wheel tracks on a couple of the faster corners, like the first (very fast) right hander.

It's not bumpy per se, but road settings will be fine. Don't worry, I'll be there shitting myself right alongside you.

Went for a ride over it yesterday, the seal was pretty shithouse, the tar looked slippery and sticky, with a bit of sun on it, will be pretty grotty.:pinch:

I've only ever seen one 400 keep up with an SV in a drag race, and it was Glen Williams SV too, but it can be done. I hate to think of what has to be done, it's very impressive to watch a FZR400 pull away down the back straight of Pukie though.

The 400's (450's) - I can confirm will kick arse in a straight line, & have the potential to still win (note Andy Bolwell is the current F3 champ on his green meanie). The SV has its strengths in the drive off corners & the fact that they are a lot newer in design & tend to be more reliable (less worn out) as a result.

Going up Deanno's hill I suspect the SV would be overall a stronger package with its broader range of power delivery. Of course Drew knows all about this now riding his 749R aye.

Top speed is one thing but make it up hill and power is suddenly more of a factor than a good fairing and crouch!
Mine (Stock and 400cc) Did 12.99 standing.
A stock SV is at least a second faster.

That, I think, is whats going to matter on the hill.

Young Drew (not Mr Champ) did 214 on his (2nd gen) at one of the sprints. A Full fairing would probably help alot more too.

I reckon the SV's will piss on any 400s that show.
F3 modded 450's may be a different story?!
