As the topic states, finally got round to doing the test for my restricted (been able for 5ish months, just haven't had time with uni etc). Sat it in pap, from the library, tester was good, checked about the 70kms before we left, and he said do the posted limit, not 70 in areas greater than 70. And also told me to ride slightly above 50, as bikes read low (already knew that, but good to see he knows aswell). And no lights, and 3 round-a-bouts (off mem).

Congrats! Sounds like you had a great tester and I guess you will be counting down the days till the next test for the Full? :niceone:

Sure will, and will also be investigating the mainland drive school course, sounds like it can knock 9 months off your licence period. Now just gota save up for a bigger bike (for after I get my full). But the thing that did worry me (and it seems to have a few people concerned) is the safety of not using intercoms (I would have spent about a third of my time looking to see if he was indicating, which, imho is just down right dangerous).

I didn't get to use an intercom for my full 'cos when I turned up at the AA at Manukau my tester (btw he was a great guy) told me "ah, sorry they're all broken at the moment, we'll have to do it the old-fashioned way" (which was set of instructions with a designated stop point at the end of each). I figured if that's the way it had been done 'in the old days' then surely I could handle it! Sure did keep my brain working as it was all around parts of Papatoetoe that I didn't know existed!
As for checking your mirrors, apart from the fact that you should be doing that fairly frequently anyway, certainly before turning, he told me it was really only as a backup if I couldn't remember the instructions he'd given me. What was a bit weird was that he hung waaaaaaaaay back behind me - didn't think I was that dangerous  - so his indicating for my benefit might have looked a little odd to others! You'll be fine :2thumbsup If I can do it, I'm sure you can.
p.s. I thought that "they're all broken at the moment" was a real South Auckland mintie moment.

What do they examine you on a restricted test , what do you have to do ?

Pretty much they start with checking ya bike (L plate fixed, current reg and wof, all lights work, horn etc.) and that you have your current licence on you.
The test itself was very straightforward. The testing officer gave me small sets of instructions regarding the route he wanted me to take and where he wanted me to stop at the end of each. All in all, was about 4 or 5 segments around Takanini, going through various intersections (T-, crossroad, roundabout) mostly in 50kph zone and then a small stretch on a 70kph zone before heading back to the VTNZ. He spoke with me briefly at each stop. Whole thing took barely 20 minutes. Pieeeeeeeeeeece of cake.:wari: Good luck.

mine was essentially the same... all the WOF bs, and a set of instructions, stop, more instructions, stop, etc etc. took me up a 100k road, turned around and came back. actually thought id fail, as when we turned back to town, i had to go up a dead end street to safely do so. did a u turn at the end [feet up! pity it wasnt my full!!] and forgot to turn my indicator off.
i advise you to look around when leaving the start point. when i left mine, there was a gaggle of school buses up the road, with kids crossing the ped crossing. he took me in a circle so id have to go over the crossing. slowed to about 40, and exagerated a lean forwards to see around the 2 cars for kids.
id also top the tank up as well, just to make sure.

good idea, i didn't for my full and (thankfully it was on my way home after my test) had to switch to reserve; no go juice at a right turning set of lights with a whole lot of cars behind me, and on a hill.... blah blah blah. At least I knew what to do that time. Sooooooooo pleased it didn't happen during my test, only because I would have felt like an unprepared twit. Maybe I was....
