EXCELLENT EASTERN ESCAPE
Waikaremoana - Wairoa - Mohaka - Tutira - Waipunga
Summer is here so I thought I'd better plan a bit of riding. This is going to be a real cruisy one, We've done the route before in a day, so 2 days will give us plenty of time for sightseeing, swimming, fishing etc. The route is all just tar & gravel roads, with the exception of a couple of short slightly rougher dirt road sections through the Waipunga.
The meeting place will be the G.A.S petrol station in Murupara, just off hwy 38, 10:00am Saturday 12 Jan. We'll then cruise through the Waikaremoana road, pick up some beers & BBQ tucker in Wairoa & travel the 30 km to my Bro's bach at Mohaka. The more adventurous in the party may want to explore some of the backroads between Waikaremoana & Mohaka on the way. There are plenty of beds in the bach & the old cottage, bring a sleeping bag.
On the Sunday we'll head South down hwy 2 'til Tutira then turn inland over the Maungaharuru Ranges, coming out onto the Napier-Taupo Rd just before crossing the Mohaka again. We'll turn off at Waipunga & head along the Eastern boundary of the Kaingaroa forest back to Minginui & our starting point of Murupara.
Stage distances / fuel availability:
Murupara - Waikaremoana: 80 km, fuel available
Waikaremoana - Wairoa: 65 km, fuel available
Wairoa - Mohaka: 30 km, no fuel
Mohaka - Tutira: 46 km, fuel available (91 only)
Tutira - Te Haroto: 53 km, no fuel
Te Haroto - Murupara: 110km, fuel available (until 6pm)
Please register your attendance here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1503&day=2008-1-12)

funny you should say that. Kanny wrote a letter to Santa, and on the list was, "anything for Bumble".
So i got to thinking, (ow, f**k that hurts), why not throw a set of Trail Wings on the spoked rims, do a few little mods to make it more gravel friendly, and away she goes. it's got a nice low C of G. A comfy saddle seat, and the HP is nice and gentle.
She has already spent a bit of time on unsealed roads, and this could be a cool getaway.
I'll dose her up on wine, and then spring my cunning plan.<_<

*strokes chin thoughtfully* it could work. How does the volty get on at the moment on gravel?

Very well actually. The tyres are all wrong. (Chen Shin Directional up fr on a 18" rim, and a Kenda road tyre on a 120/80 size 17" rim), so with decent dual purpose rubber, some fork gaiters, and fresh fork oil, plus the original Scrambler shocks fitted, (slightly longer, and better damping over the Volty's) it could be a groovey gravel dancer.
What say you Clint?
Kanny has just got home. I put the idea to her, and she's keen as mustard. (no bribery needed, and i save on wine).

Sweet. The trail wings (fondly known as deathwings on ADVrider) seem to be pretty good on my bike, despite their bad rep on larger bikes.
What are the bars like on the Volty? Having fairly high, wide bars certainly makes a difference on the gravel. I've got the old bars off the sherpa going spare if that would help your evil plan in any way.
Of course, just because she likes your idea doesn't mean you can skimp on the wine :nono:
It would be very cool to have Kanny along on the ride  And 'Adventure Bumble' too :D

5th December 2007, 19:05
Sorting through the tyre situation already. The 18" front rim requires a 3.00" aggressive tyre, and the range is limited.
The bars are pretty good. Quite high, and like a western pull back style, but we'll keep your kind offer in my memory.
Lots of gravel round this way to practise on. And the Waiheke Eastern loop ride and wine trail is now a certainty.:wari:

Don't be too put off the deathwings....Bass foolishly let me ride his bike for a while returning from Raglan last weekend and I thought them quite acceptable. The rear slid out readily and controllably and when I pushed the front hard enough it too slid in a controllable (generous description of my riding style) manner. I know they are marginal on wet seal but for gravel work I was pleasantly surprised. All testing on Klondyke road which is tight, small gravel and muddy surface and for reference I run TKC80's on my bike.

What say you Clint?
Bring it on I reckon. Just get a bit of practice first. The Waikaremoana road is 100km of windy gravel, but we'll have all day. If Kanny is all gravelled out on the Sunday she can just bypass the gravel bits, I'd recommend leaving out the Waipunga section, that's probably a little bit rough for a road bike.
Cheers

'Deathwings' eh.....yeah, I like that!! Theyre crap, anything with Michelin on it will deliver; I have used Sirac ( smaller sizes than Anakee) and found them a great 50/50 tyre. And, T63 knobs really do hang on both on gravel and seal( I even did a Suzuki 'trailblazer' trail ride on them and tractored past many bogged Katies etc on slipery uphill!!).......at the moment, the T63 will be my tyre of choice when the DR is not on road tyres as I am not finding any place now for the adventure tyres.
Can't wait to go over the Waikaremoana rd again, thats an adventure!!

If you are low on inspiration on the tyre front, have a scratch around in the Thumpers forum on ADV rider. There are a few threads on smaller (<250cc) adventure bikes, and you may find someone else with an equally interesting set up.

I have secured one of the last 18" 100/90 Trail Wing TW35 in NZ. (1 left).
Will probably put a TW42 120/90 -17 on the rear.
I have the correct size fork gaiters in the garage, and a fresh bottle of 10wgt fork oil.
Have also ordered a Ventura Pack Rack bracket assy, and thats about it.
Will get all but the pack rack fitted up over the next week, then a good shake down run out the back of Kawhia, staying at the Bach for a base.

Good work! I reckon that setup will go well. Talkin' road tyres, but my 'ol RZ had a 100/90-18 on the front & that handled well in gravel, a lot better than my TDR that had a 120-18 & a higher CoG, although the TDR did absorb the bumps a bit better.
Might be a good idea to slide the forks as far down in the triples as possible to give some stability, esp if you're jackin up the back.

Yep, onto that. Can lower them safely about 15-20mm, but the Scrambler OE shocks are about 45-50mm longer than the Volty ones. So I'll try both shocks and see which is the best suited. If its too jacked at the back with the scrambler ones, i'll stick with what it's got. How cool would a raised, and treaded Volty look?:headbang:

If you have ever had the oppertunity to operate as many differant vehicles both with Michelin tyres and without, as I have, you too would be a fan.
The ride quality and wear differance is probably most noticable on Ag tractors...and I mean real ag tractors, not your townie 'lawn' tracs....160+ Hp...you just would not belive there could be such a variation between brands-Michelin ride like you have cab suspension. No flat spotting, no power-hop.
I have experianced back to back Michelin v Conti on a car and again; much quieter and smoother ride with the Michelin. And you know how they work on my bikes- having been behind me on many occasions, Bass!
Differant strokes for differant folks I realise.
They ring my bell. AND...look after my safety.

The bach is kind of on the beach near the Mohaka river mouth, off hwy 2, 30 km south of Wairoa. There's a cliff out front so you have to go down the road a little way to find the track to the beach. The fishing is allegedly pretty good so the keen fishos in the crew might want to bring their tackle.

What a shame you dont fly fish Brent. You had plenty of time last Saturday to throw a line out out while you were trying to show the rest of us how NOT to cross a river on a bike! Although I suppose the sight of a Triumph Scrambler being swept down stream would scare the fish away?

Hi Mate. A pack rack is one way to do it, the easily removable Ventura setups look good, & they probably have one on the shelf for your bike, but I've seen pack racks fail more than once when they're loaded up & doing lots of bumpy roads. Adapting on an old farmbike carrier from the wreckers can often be a cheap simple way to carry some luggage too.
I prefer soft panniers as they keep the weight lower, & if you're not carrying a passenger they can sit well forward also, keeping the bike better balanced. I also like being able to swing my leg over the back of the bike when getting on. I made up some rails that follow the lines of the rear side panels on my KTM to tie the bottom of the pannier to & keep them secure & off the exhaust. Have a look in this thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=31588) for some pics & advice.
I made up some similar ones for Rosie's new Sherpa a few weeks back, pic attached below, I've also seen real basic versions of the same idea - just get a bit of steel of your choice, drill it to attach to a handy bolthole on the front of the subframe, bends as required, then drill another hole to attach to whatever you can find at the back.
Cheers

Had not thought of making a frame! I was thinking panniers but..... Panniers and my mufffler and i had visions of trying to outrun the flames blasting off my own bike! That would be kind of funny... But would ruin the beer!
Must take the bike for a good run to be sure i can make the last section without towing a fuel trailer..!!

When we head off SH5 are we going in at the top of the waipunga deviation or going up the old pohokura road from the bottom and up past the old village and along to the bridge?

But then they graded it all and took out all the ruts and the good stuff, they actually maintained it when those big slips came down in the Waipunga

Well that was an AWESOME ride!:scooter:
Cant get far down the old road from the top of the waipunga deviation, the track turns to... Hmm no track but lots of broom and some deep washouts that if they swallowed my bike, i would be in trouble! esp as i was alone
Bottom end of the road is indeed blocked by a gate with some serious concrete, i did sneek around however (make a bad move here and my bike would still be there sitting down in a creek on its handlebars and seat!) and rode up the road but came across a no trespassing, will nail your arse in court type sign from the pohukura trust and lots of wheel tracks into the scrub.... Hmmmm Must be planting time. and since i knew i would not make it out the other end alone, i headed home.
Least i know i can do 160km before i hit reserve and in theory, after filling should still have about 5L of liquid gold in the tank :niceone:
The route from the Napier Taupo road in via Waipunga road looked clear and fresh trail bikes marks heading down into the back of the forest

any folk doing this event, coming from south/east/west, who want to come over friday evening to get a good start saturday morning;?; well; i can put a few up here, only 1/2 hour ride to start at murupara.
i don't want to upsurp any offers/plans that clint may have in mind..............so..............see if there is a better offer ! ! !
Good idea mate! We might be up for that.
Another idea I had was to stop in at Waikite Hot Pools after the ride for a relaxing dip & a feed, or if it's a hot day we could stop in for a swim at Rerewhakaitu.
Yep the plan is to go in from the Waipunga end of Pohokura Rd.
Cheers

+2 on a fri night accom stop over would be great. Kanny and the Volty would be pushing hard to go Hamtown-Murupara, and then start the ride, all in a Sat morn, so we will watch and see what offers float up.
i can sleep under a hedge if need be, (and ocassionally have:drinknsin). But karen may need something more comfy. Can't wait for this ride:woohoo:

Nooo worries mate, we got 3 spare bedrooms and a 4 berth motorhome parked just outside....I could put the whole damned ride up!!!!( if Bass will stop being a 'bitch' and just SHARE!!)
I wasn't going to do this, but I can't resist it. He's left me an opening that I could sail an aircraft carrier through. So.............
Change of plans guys
The ride now starts at 5.00 pm Jamie's place on Friday 11th. His shout, cos not only does he have beds for Africa, but he also has a barbie that's wider than the Exxon Valdez.
Further, since he will now have a full contingent, I have no choice and so I will have to share. So I WILL share. I will share with Kanny.
See you all next Friday

Just wondering about this blue bit. As I'm coming from the south, I might do this section on the Friday. What's the name of the road, and is it easy going, gravel, etc?

Been a while since i have been in there, i know if i went in i would find my way across but would have to play it by follow my nose, many forestry roads in there!. Gravel, Pot holes, was a ford to cross,
Road is Pohokura off SH5, Up the waipunga 3laner, past the falls on your right and its the next road to your right from the HBay, down the seal over the bridge, hang a left follow nose..... Probably not well sign posted....
Hmmm been 5 years since i was logging the area and about 4 since i worked on foresty equipment out there...
Someone may have a more detailed map or directions..

Ok, from what i can find.....
R. Pohukura road from SH5.
L. Waipunga Rd.
R. Circuit Rd to T.
L. Forestry Rd.
L. Motukuri Rd
Sharp R. Boundry Rd.
Becomes Otueta Rd.
Becomes south Rd.
R. Main Rd.
L. Old Tewhaiti Rd.
L. Old SH38 to Murupara.
Cautions:
I am not sure if all of these roads have legal public access. :Police:
I am not sure if all roads will be sign posted. :blank:
I am not sure if foresty crews or off highway stems or doubles will be working.:dodge:
I know there aint no petrol stations out there!:eek5:
I know its a long walk should something go wrong! :doctor:
I know phone coverage will be zero.:mega:
and i know i dont want you getting into a position you need help without any.
How many bikes are you going in with?
Should i try for Friday off i am thinking........:woohoo:

Ok, I now have my paniers on the bike!:woohoo:
Made some frames that go just under the plastics so things dont push in to the exhaust etc but after whipping up the highway home from work i found the bags still get quite hot:doh:
Those of you that run panier bags can probably tell me if i am freaking out for no reason!
How hot do your bags get?
Rosie
6th January 2008, 10:47
How hot do your bags get?
Kind of warm, but not hot. My exhaust has heat shielding around it, and Clint made an extra bit of shielding on the rack, so the bags end up being a reasonable distance from the exhaust, and with a couple of layers of metal between them.
From what I can tell from your photos, my exhaust side pannier sits down further, so it's next to the exhaust, rather than over top of it.
I'll get some photos and post them up tomorrow, if you'd like.
offrd
6th January 2008, 11:13
OK! I will add a heat sheild, I have also dropped the bag lower so heat can get out the top easier.
Then i will road test

Pretty much what Offrd said. If you've got a topomap & a GPS plus plenty of time you'll find your way through alright, but be aware that the roads don't quite match the map in places & pretty much all the signposts have been shot off / run over.
The route to Minginui as above is public access, all other forestry roads in there you are supposed to get a permit for.

Don't forget that anybody who wants to do some extra hooning & exploring on the Saturday should check out a good map of the area inland of Wairoa & Mohaka. There's lots of interesting looking roads in there that might make for a good 'long cut' between hwy 38 & hwy 2. You will have to consider fuel range & get someone else to grab dinner stuff for you if you miss out Wairoa though.
I'll be taking the main roads in cruisy mode with the girls. :scooter:

Looks like you are going to be in for a great weedend ride and no doubt a few juicy steaks on the BBQ to start with. I was hoping that i might be tagging along but sadly the bike has not got it's act together and fixed the problem itself. the problem is still unidentified, and quite disapointing to say the least.

I had a few scary moments involving ruts filled with deep gravel (going downhill too :eek5:)
I have been thinking quite seriously about this because this was also my experience. I had all sorts of discoveries.
Like the need to scan well ahead because any change in the appearance of the road surface probably means an obstacle of some sort.
Like coming over a blind brow at about 120 kliks in top gear, wondering if it was wise and discovering it wasn't, because the road turned to shit big time, just after the crest. However also discovering (out of sheer desperation) that there are ways to get the front end light, before you hit the holes and that even if you can't, the suspension is surprisingly capable and so, it pretty much doesn't matter, even on some quite significant holes.
Like coming over another blind brow at what I thought was a pretty reasonable speed to discover a steep(ish) descent, heavily rutted, covered with rocks the size of tennis balls and with a water crossing at the bottom. Realising that there is no way to stop, descending with the back wheel locked and hoping to scrub off enough speed so that I can pick an entry into the water. Finding that it worked pretty well and was largely a non-event.
This section certainly had the most and also the most severe pucker moments, but it was also the section where I learned the most about my own and the bikes capabilities.
For me it was the most valuable.
