    Adventure Assault #5 - EEE - 12/13 Jan 08

    EXCELLENT EASTERN ESCAPE

    Waikaremoana - Wairoa - Mohaka - Tutira - Waipunga

Summer is here so I thought I'd better plan a bit of riding. This is going to be a real cruisy one, We've done the route before in a day, so 2 days will give us plenty of time for sightseeing, swimming, fishing etc. The route is all just tar & gravel roads, with the exception of a couple of short slightly rougher dirt road sections through the Waipunga.

The meeting place will be the G.A.S petrol station in Murupara, just off hwy 38, 10:00am Saturday 12 Jan. We'll then cruise through the Waikaremoana road, pick up some beers & BBQ tucker in Wairoa & travel the 30 km to my Bro's bach at Mohaka. The more adventurous in the party may want to explore some of the backroads between Waikaremoana & Mohaka on the way. There are plenty of beds in the bach & the old cottage, bring a sleeping bag.

On the Sunday we'll head South down hwy 2 'til Tutira then turn inland over the Maungaharuru Ranges, coming out onto the Napier-Taupo Rd just before crossing the Mohaka again. We'll turn off at Waipunga & head along the Eastern boundary of the Kaingaroa forest back to Minginui & our starting point of Murupara.

    Stage distances / fuel availability:

Murupara - Waikaremoana: 80 km, fuel available
Waikaremoana - Wairoa: 65 km, fuel available
Wairoa - Mohaka: 30 km, no fuel
Mohaka - Tutira: 46 km, fuel available (91 only)
Tutira - Te Haroto: 53 km, no fuel
Te Haroto - Murupara: 110km, fuel available (until 6pm)

    My first real adventure ride
I'd better get some gravel training in before then.

Damn, it's about a week to early for me, oh well next time then. Have fun guys!

Paved roads are just another example of wasted tax payer dollars.

Waves arms/hands/legs, all appendages furiously from the back of the class, until "dunces" cap falls off head and pointy bit stabs him in genitals.

Now I wonder who you will get to do that?

If you want "swimming with your bike" lessons Triboy has had recent experience!!!

The sherpa is so light, it would probably float away

I'm going to be starting my gravel training all by myself. Unless Clint wants to tag along on his pushbike

You're silly I think you should get Kanny a Sherpa for Christmas, so she could come along and be my n00b adventure buddy

funny you should say that. Kanny wrote a letter to Santa, and on the list was, "anything for Bumble".
So i got to thinking, (ow, f**k that hurts), why not throw a set of Trail Wings on the spoked rims, do a few little mods to make it more gravel friendly, and away she goes. it's got a nice low C of G. A comfy saddle seat, and the HP is nice and gentle.
She has already spent a bit of time on unsealed roads, and this could be a cool getaway.

I'll dose her up on wine, and then spring my cunning plan.

*strokes chin thoughtfully* it could work. How does the volty get on at the moment on gravel?

For a nominal fee, I can make sure Kanny is deeply involved in girly conversation in another room when the dancing girls turn up

Very well actually. The tyres are all wrong. (Chen Shin Directional up fr on a 18" rim, and a Kenda road tyre on a 120/80 size 17" rim), so with decent dual purpose rubber, some fork gaiters, and fresh fork oil, plus the original Scrambler shocks fitted, (slightly longer, and better damping over the Volty's) it could be a groovey gravel dancer.
    What say you Clint?

Kanny has just got home. I put the idea to her, and she's keen as mustard. (no bribery needed, and i save on wine).

    Good one Clint

I maybe a starter, depends if the bike and/or body survives the dusty butt the weekend before

    Sounds like a good trip.

    Cheers Scott

Sweet. The trail wings (fondly known as deathwings on ADVrider) seem to be pretty good on my bike, despite their bad rep on larger bikes.

What are the bars like on the Volty? Having fairly high, wide bars certainly makes a difference on the gravel. I've got the old bars off the sherpa going spare if that would help your evil plan in any way.

Of course, just because she likes your idea doesn't mean you can skimp on the wine

It would be very cool to have Kanny along on the ride And 'Adventure Bumble' too

Sorting through the tyre situation already. The 18" front rim requires a 3.00" aggressive tyre, and the range is limited.
The bars are pretty good. Quite high, and like a western pull back style, but we'll keep your kind offer in my memory.
Lots of gravel round this way to practise on. And the Waiheke Eastern loop ride and wine trail is now a certainty.
