View Full Version : Anyone going to Vic Uni next year?

Slipstream

Today I just enrolled :

- my youngest into a creche (and a back up)
- my car into a uni carpark...(or 'the right to hunt' as they put it)
- myself into uni

:2thumbsup

I have finally gotten my A into G and enrolled myself into a 3 year BCA with a major in Accounting. Then hopefully I will still be pumped, and do a 4th year to become a Charted Accountant.... does that sound nerdy? :o
Meanwhile on my days off, I'll be studying up on running my dads business and tutoring chess at my oldest's school....OK, that really does sound nerdy :sweatdrop

Anyway, I'll be hard out studying and being a swot, but occasionally I might let myself be dragged into Eastide for a cold one (hint hint):apint:

I am totally looking forward to the brain strain which will be shoving more knowledge into my wee head :)

Yep - I'll be there too. My 5th year, woah! It's all good though - wouldn't be there if it wasn't. But I guess it's diff for diff people, sounds like you're quite into it though so it should be good! But (as I pm'd you) you should be using the bike parks! Eventually maybe?!
The best loos are in the 'basement' of the library - nice chequered tiles, and the best hot chockies (ie with marshmallows and choc fish) are at Illot. And the best place in the library to sleep is in the booths on the 3rd floor overlooking the Quad (which is inevitable in there because there's no oxygen in there, it's always warm, and the windows never let the light in properly cause they're covered in a layer of grime).

But you've been there all year?

:sunny: There's the 'unofficial-but-most-handy' one right up against the north end of the Library (right between the Student Union building and the Quad). I think that's the most used one.
:sunny: There's the 'big' one down below the south end of the Rec centre which is a huge bike park but I don't know if many people park there cause it's kind of in the waps compared to the others.
:sunny: And there's the 'new' one in the resealed carpark outside Cotton. Pretty small but there's not usually many bikes/scooters there.

Just watch it if it's windy up there - I've had to pick up so many bikes and scooters over the years!

Been there for 2 years. Hrrrmph. Because I have lectures in the evening I never get to eyeball where the bikes park, and I have also never been given a tour so all dem names mean nuttin.

I will book your help for early next year, and pay with Hot Chocolate with marshmallows and chocolate fish if you can show me where they are supposed to be.

Good on ya!

My ex - the Devil Women Incarnate (alias The Sucker Of All That is Life), was an accountant. Went to her office once - they were all Major Major Pocket Protectors. Found out at the Xmax party that they were all Major Pissheads as well. Duel personalities almost.

Always seems to be jobs going for accountants! (then again, they probably have a good turnover as heaps of the ones in that office got done for fiddling)

Good Luck!

I plan to be riding at the end of the year. That's when my budget will let me and thats when the kids will be going to the same school. For now the cage is the most convienient option :/

And I always found the best place to sleep at vic was in the basement of the library. Very quite....if you ignored all the people trying to do a root 'n' scoot :msn-wink:

I use to hang out at uni for a couple of years...6th and 7th form were too boring, so I went to uni instead :D

The parties, the drinking, the older boys, the cooler girls...has much changed?
Not that I'll be doing any of that, now that I am a responsible mother of 2, who intends not to be swayed from her swotdom ;)

Oh yeah - that's excellent news! Once you get into it you'll love it.

I have to stop making everything about me, me, me. F__king boring tard I am.

Sorry about hijacking, but I've struggled all year to get someone in admin to actually show me where the bike parks are.

Then hopefully I will still be pumped

Bwahahahahaha... poor girl.

But you will most likely do the fourth year anyway, out of desperation, inertia, and a desire to avoid having to look for a job. Just don't be sucked into a PhD, OK?

Charted Accountant

Yeah baby, Top 40 all the way. Word. (If there was a homeboy-in-a-hoodie smiley, I'd use it right here...)

tutoring chess

Someone should start a chess thread. Favourite defenses, perhaps? Some public KB correspondence games, where we post our moves in notation, with comments interspersed?

Yep - consider it booked! Sounds like there'll be a few of us there so we should all meet up and cause a bit of havock.

Another hint for new Vic-goers is that if you're going to be hanging around all day and want to ditch your gear, the lockers are just wide enough to fit your helmet and cost $20 a semester. But if you've only got a couple of lectures or are going to head home in between, there's not much point. It's best to work out where your lectures are first and then get the nearest locker.

Look forward to hearing all the news about the new role.

It's gonna be a real mission fitting in motherhood and study but I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Any thoughts on what bike you'll get? We need more Yamaha riders in Welly to keep the Suzuki riders honest... ;)

Well...My dream bike at the mo' would be an Aprillia RSV, but it' looks like I might actually try for a GSXR 250 first, then when I get more used to the hill starts (I hate them with a passion), then I'll upgrade to the 'Holy' R1 :)

...but chances are, being a poor student, I might only be able to afford another 'Mighty' B120 ;)

But DAMN SKIPPY I'll be riding on summin' with 2 wheels by the end of next year! You can bet on it! (BTW I don't do scooters, sorry)

Ah... I remember it well...

We used to park our bikes on Kelburn Parade, outside the Science (Kirk??) Building. There was quite a large section set aside for bikes, and normally several dozen could be seen there during the day. The wind of course was a problem; combined with the slope, this meant lighter bikes were at some risk of toppling over. Mine went over one day in a howling southerly, snapping off the brake lever half way along. Being too poor to replace it, I rode for the rest of the year with half a brake lever (and probably half the braking efficiency with the reduced leverage) until I gratefully sold the bike and graduated to the luxury of a 1955 Ford Prefect. Now that was an interesting car...

Hey there, I'm Bevan & I too will be at Vic this year, making the place home in my third year. I'm also in my second year as the Treasurer of the VUW Students' Association. So I can probably help with quite a lot of things, including the car parks and lockers, so if you ever need to contact me the info is here: http://www.vuwsa.org.nz/the_executive/ . As for parking bikes, best place I would recommend is go up that driveway just by the second set of lights (as you're going up Kelburn Pde), there is a barrier but don't worry it goes up automatically - and if it doesn't on a bike you just ride round it! And park in the space by the end of the library and opposite the Art Gallery & SUB building (as has already been mentioned). Also if you are doing commerce or law, you will eventually have classes down @Rutherford house. When you do, park within the Law Buildings complex where at the centre of it on the sea side there are designated bike parks. Entrance to this is from Whitmore street.
There has also been talk of re-establishing the Vic Motorcycle club on campus at VUW. Are there any signs of interest / offers of wisdom or advice from here? Let me know either via this thread or PM me.
Hope this helps!

Definitely up for Vic Motorcycle club. I'll be using a M'Bike for second year all the time, but the this year I'll most likely still be using cage, due to transportation of munchkins.

There still aren't.

She should probably be isolated and studied.

Hi Bevan - me and a couple of mates tried to start the Vic Uni bike club back up last year but we didn't do the official VUWSA way because of all the liability and red tape that we would have to put up with (it was all getting a bit ridiculous when we talked it through with the clubs gal). We did a couple of rides (got 8 people the first time but 2 the second - the 2nd time it was in the hols so prob not the best idea). In the end the guy who was the 'decided' Pres. kind of lost interest and I didn't feel like keeping it going with no back up so not much happened. I'd def. be keen to help out though if you want to get it going again, but I wouldn't suggest going the official way (even if you are a VUWSA lad) cause it'll turn into an OSh-like nightmare. But I've got a list of 35 Vic bikers and their phone no./emails from last year, (except a few would've gone by now) but it might help.
Let me know if you go ahead with anything.
