Guy I know (you know him too) rides a Hyabusa but has a Jog in the garage.
I was at the local Honda agent with the SJ50 the other day and a guy I know as a Blackbird owner came over for a chat.
"That yours?"
"Yeah". (Just a little defensively...)
"I've got one of those."
Went to the local Ulysses Christmas function yesterday.
The guy that was sitting next to me owns a Triumph Trophy but is currently testing a Bonneville with intent. He told me he'd heard I'd bought a scooter, then he said he had an SJ50 too. He rides the scooter to work everyday, it costs him $2.00 per week.
So I guess next time you see a scooter it just might not be a newbie, impecunious, student/school boy type. In most of the above cases though the size of our beer gut should give a hint of that. :whistle

Interesting thing I have found ..... and I ride my scoot to work each day .... is that bike riders don't acknowldege you !! lol .. But .. when I'm riding my CB1300S, other riders acknowledge me. I think it's a bit of a laugh ... seems like there is a bit of snobbery going on ... or something like that. Me ..... I wave to anyone except gangsters !
And I love riding my scoot. I think Im actually getting more fun around town on it lately, than on the CB, which has been sitting in the shed a bit lately because the weather has been crap in the weekends in Whangarei lately.

Know what you mean... Just lately I've twice seen a new GSXR coming out from the area I live as I've been going home. He doesn't even look at the scooter so I don't wave.
It will be interesting to see what happens when I see him when I'm out with the VFR? He will be easy to spot, he wears distinctive work overalls.

I think a lot of it isn't 'snobbery'. It's that scooters are commuter vehicles.
I can understand why they're not acknowleged. I get all sorts of dorks trying to get my attention when I stop at traffic lights on my commuter vehicle. It's fecking annoying.

A recent arrival in this country commented to me that he hadn't experienced all this brand jealousy (my words) previously. If you were a biker you were a biker full stop.
The only division I was really aware of prior to coming to KB was the 1%er thing and their dislike of Japanese machinery.
I had seen a letter in an Oz Bike mag many years ago complaining that at bike rallies the Ducati riders only spoke to BMW riders, and the BMW riders spoke only to God.
Reading through the threads on KB there is evidence of some closed minds.
The sort of copmment that says, "Only this is good". Be it a type of helmet, a helmet fastening system, a category of bikes, or a particular brand.

And in case anybody would like to trade up for $10.00; Ulysses NZ has a bike raffle going $10 per ticket. Your choice of about ten bikes: Aprilia Tuono, three different Guzzis, Honda Fireblade or VT1800, the big Yamaha naked and a big cruiser etc etc. Should be something for (almost) anybody...

I didn't think it was really anything serious, you always get pi$$-taking between mates and I count it like that.
Apart from the fact that, as a classic scooter rider, I obviously don't talk to anyone riding a Jap auto..

Yeah, that is where you're coming from, but Pritch is right. There are 'Brand Racists" here.
As far as I'm concerned a guy who rides a Motorcycle is a Motorcyclist.
The Make they choose I may not choose but hey, that's why there's lotsa different Makes & models.

On my 150cc scooter - no waves
Now on my Burgman, some waves!
Does this mean some sort of acceptance by 'real' bikers.
I dunno, time will tell.

If they're not polite enough to wave, they aint worth the knowing.
(Unless they were cranked over in a corner/avoiding homicidal car drivers at the time)

An ad (with a photo) in there can work wonders.

The ride down the coast to Thames must be fun on a bloody scoot.
Well my brother bought his first bike last week, a suzuki 50cc something or other. He reckons it's awesome. It better be as it will be my only form of 2 wheels for 3 weeks next week when I'm down at his place. :scooter:

I have had a bike and a scooter for more years than I can remember. Unfortunatly as I am now on a pension I could not afford to register both so the scooter, being the most useful day by day, was the one I registered. I used a Vespa PX200 for several years to run a locksmith business in Paihia.
Solution, some yaers after I retired to the city of Hamilton, I sold both and bought a Burgman 400cc step through only had to borrow $3350. I now have the best of both worlds the ease (for an old man) of the stepthrough and the performance of a road bike. Got up to 140kmph last week and still had more to go. The Burgman has the biggest storage capacity of any scooter.

ive had a think... and i think the main reason i ignore scooter riders is this: most of the riders are high school aged, and most of them are fucking tosspots.
i work a servo less than a 5min ride from a major high school. as a result, we often get bombarded. funniest ive seen was a group of 3 or 4 boys. one was doing "mini wheelies", that is, revving and pulling the front up without letting the scoot go anywhere. it was pissing rain, the forecourt was wet, and he was next to the diesel pump. he stopped after he nearly assed off. second worst was the chick with the bright red fuzzy elmo slippers instead of shoes. and the number of girls who ride in barely there shirts, pants that barely cover their backsides and high heels... dicks. sure, girl, you look good now, but wait till you come off! girl i used to know used to ride like that... she got hit by a bus. i havent seen her in anything less than long pants and sleeves since. and no... she doesnt ride anymore.
there are not many adults who ride scoots regularly, at least not locally, and with full faced lids, i cannot tell at a glance from 50k whether its an adult or a wannabe inside. i dont want to encourage the wanker riders by waving and having them think theyre cool, so i just ignore the lot.

I like the scooter+bike combo idea. I'm getting pretty sick of watching random people gathering around and messing with my bike like a piece of meat when I park in public.:Oi: If I get a cheap 50cc at least I won't have to worry about it getting messed about plus I'll save petrol money for the daily commute

Well it is nice to be able to 'get along' abit, but my CB1300S hardly gets warm on a short trip, so don't think it's great running for the big motor. I prefer the T-Rex, as its up and runing quick, and it's got plenty of storage ... I just prefer the ease of the little "twist and go" for short trips, and around town running. It's a real hoot, and I've become a self confessed hoon on the thing !! lol :shifty:
