Played on the right sort of equipment, vinyl still sounds better than CD. Assuming your ears are listening to music, rather than just f*cking noise.

I've got over 1,000 on vinyl. When everyone went to CD's in the early '90's I picked up whole collections for 20 cents a record max.All the LP's I ever wanted, and more, much much more.

I love vinyl. My equipment isn't that fantastic, so the pleasant distortion vinyl offers (that's why it sounds better, it distorts and alters the pure original sound in a way that sounds nice to our ears) isn't that obvious, unless I'm listening through my Grados.

The thing I love about vinyl is that I'm into old music -- Miles Davis, Grant Green, Hank Mobley, Coltrane etc.; it's wonderful to hold the original disc and cover and read the liner notes as they were originally produced. Something very tangible and satisfying to hold that big sleeve and disc. My iPod doens't quite have the same feel.

No sound compares to the Vynil??? sounds my friend.
I used to play my records once, then only to record them to tape, so I could listen to them all the time. The vinyl came out at special times. I left behind 100's and 100's and millions of records when I left my old home. I also left behind the record player....huge amp, graphic equaliser and big stack of fuck off speakers!

My vinyl never gets played now, I only kept a few special ones.

If you want old vinyl, try second hand shops, real groovy on Queen St has heaps, good condition too. What I want is a player/amp to be able to listen to my favs on vinyl, even though I have replaced most of them by CD.

Vinal sure has a nice sound, I to have many many albums, but rarely get spun sadly.

There is somthing pure about the sound though, cd's etc just sound so sterile, you now that hospital smell type.... yeah.... thats it.

 with vinal!!!

Played on the right sort of equipment, vinyl still sounds better than CD. Assuming your ears are listening to music, rather than just f*cking noise.

lets not go there, mkay: the definition if music is any good is ENTIRELY up to whether or not the person listening to it likes it or not.

So there's room for Phillip Glass (tinkle...... plop, clunk......... ting) and the Rolling Stones, and Death Metal cookie monster music. Just because you or I might not like it, doesnt really matter.

I have about 200 albums left, when I converted to CD in the early 90's I had a cull. Of course Ive ended up buying a lot of that stuff back, either on vinyl or CD. ;)

Second hand record stores are your friend. You have to be diligent, and lucky, but sometimes among the chaff are some gems. very rare though: the guy running the store gets all the really rare stuff and keeps it, youbetcha.

I got a new drive belt for my TT a few years ago from a place in town that serviced washing machines (no joke, they were the F & P service agents as well as carrying that stuff). I have no idea what it was called but will go past on the way to work tomorrow and post it up.

Do current vinyl releases use the old analogue processes to record them, or do they go through the same digital compression type processing that seems to be inflicted on the majority of current cd releases....?

if they're going through the same processing then there should be no difference apart from a crackle.

you can even scr-ra-ra-ra-ratch cds now if you're so inclined.

ive got a few special ones... when i was born, cds were just beginning. i still remember vinyl being sold brand new. i prefer vinyl to cd, but my turntable very rarely gets used now.

ive got several copies of "bright eyes" on 45 [love that song, which is why i have a few copies, in case one gets worn out or damaged beyond use] a few queen albums, culture club, billy idol and my very top favourites: lynyrd skynyrd.
those i scored at a recordshop in regina, sasketchewan. i do wish id bought more. they deal almost entirely in popluar old music, along with drug paraphenalia [the bag they gave me was covered in pot leaves!] and a few cds.

What?

Got lots of old vinyl from years back, some of it really great and some of it really embarrassing.

I ripped all the good stuff to FLAC and on to MP3 so it can be listened to anywhere, and generally treated as part of our music collection. Someone will occasionally pull the turntable out and give it a spin for old times sake. :sunny:

Seems all my older music's on the vinyl. Black Sabbath, The Doors, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Lynard Skynard, Led Zeppelin, Killing Joke, Lou Reed, Rush, Budgie (10 albums 5 vinyl/5 CD must be biggest budgie collection in NZ Any heavy metallers out there get "In for the Kill" supremo), Free, Cream, Blind Faith, Frank Zappa, The Who, Robin Trower and a few other obscure ones

Love the vinyl, the only pain is turning it over every 20 minutes or so.

You'd have to get one of those headphone jack to the 2 little white and red cables.

then u stick that in the stereo output and the jack end into the input port for your audio on the PC.

take a look online, would be way easier then trying to read what I just wrote lol

i love playing the old records for nostalgic value ... something mesmerising about watching the vinyl spin, and that crackling before the first track if i have it up loud enough ...

as for sound quality, i played in a rock band too long to notice the difference between CD and Vinyl, the only difference i notice is the crackling or lack of between tracks.

I sold off all my record collection, though most of them were well scratched from drunken parties, there was alot of stuff that I would never see again, The Gordons, Toy Love, Iggy and the Stooges, etc some coloured and picture albums.

I'm a musician so any reproduction of music is a little bit of sacrilidge in my book :Pokey: however Vinyl (when painstakingly made, handled, stored and played on the best quality turntables) has an important advantage to the aurally attuned. A CD range is from 20Hz to 22kHz. A Vinyl record will record much lower and much higher frequencies than this.

Human hearing is tuned to 15Hz to 22kHz however we can perceive the harmonics of higher and lower than this range which can affect the percieved purity and tone of an instrument or voice.

Compact disc and other forms of digital music are convenient and easy though.

This is an arguement that will rage eternal. Just like the Tube Vs Transistor one.
I have read that on early CD's (Analogue mastertape recordings transposed to CD) that because of the frequency cut and lift (RIAA) that LP's were made with, the lift in the high frequencies is partly responsible for the sharpness heard in those recordings. I had Vinyl till 3 yrs ago (Thorens with a Garrat Bros' P77). A good quality CD player simply out performed it, A Linn or Rok with a Keutsu? Ya talking! But yeh I still use a Toob Amp, for that lovely warm sound :Punk:

Dont forget...most turntable putput to a Phono level, not a line in level....even though the same RCA type plus are used.

What that means is.....often a computers line input wont handle the very low level of output from a turntable....you need a middle (phono) amplifier in between the 2.

An exception are the new turntables, linked just above, with everthing built in. But the sound quality from these is often a bit lower.......?

Rega P2 with Super bias cart - Rotel Pre and Powers - B&W fs. A 4k stereo 2nd hand.....blitzes any CD based system under about 6k. Still some good value in a decent turntable system......and loads of classic albums found in garage sales ultra cheaply :)

Hiya, two systems at the moment. Rc / Rb 03's for the TT, but often have em hooked into an older RB 985 (5 chan) amp in the lounge set-up, into B&W 604's. The Subs just for movies lol.....the 604's have more than enuff grunt as it is. (Unless listening to some loud D&B, then the windows shake!)

So no longer anywhere near entry-level audiophile....its been fuddled around to fit into a generic HT kida setup to keep everyone else happy too. But ont he od occasion, hook up some 602's (Rears in the HT system) direct to the RB03's, for some more critical listening.

I found an immaculate copy of "the Who Live at Leeds" with all the inserts and stuff* at the shop in Cuba St.
Left it in the car , warped like a potato chip. Fucked me off considerably.

*The album cover looks like the simple cover of a bootleg LP of the era: it is of plain brown cardboard with "The Who Live At Leeds" printed on it in plain blue or red block letters as if stamped on with ink (on the original first English pressing of 300, this stamp is black). The original LP's cover opened out, gatefold-style, and had a pocket on either side of the interior, with the record in a paper sleeve on one side and 12 facsimilés of various memorabilia on the other, including a photo of the band from the My Generation photoshoot, handwritten lyrics to the "Listening to You" chorus from Tommy, a receipt for smoke bombs, a rejection letter from EMI, and the early black "Maximum R&B" poster showing Pete Townshend windmilling his Rickenbacker. The first 500 copies included a copy of the contract for The Who to play at the Woodstock Festival.

The label was handwritten (apparently in Townshend's hand), and included instructions to the engineers not to attempt to remove any crackling noise

All is not lost, two baking trays and a hot oven can fix this. Heat the oven up and scrub the trays so they are absolutely smooth. Put record on one tray and into oven, as soon as record warps remove and place other oven tray on top and a stack of books on top of that. Leave for an hour.

Worked for me, picked up a copy of Spike Milligan's Bad Jelly the Witch for 50 cents at the Hamilton Recycling Centre a few years back and it was warped, but the above method sorted it out. Not even a scratch on it.

OK, thats a terrible single from an even more terrible album. It was done with a bunch of numpties after Joe had kicked Mick out of the band, Topper was completely fucked with heroin addiction. From memory Paul was still involved, but since his major contribution to the Clash was "Guns of Brixton" then I think its fair to say he didnt have much to do.

awful awful travesty.

On hte other hand, I have a bunch of .45s of when they were good. Including White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Radio Clash, Rock the Casbah and Train in Vain.

Dont get me wrong, I love the Clash. If only they'd gone for a decent holiday after Sandinista! (or before: there is a good album in there, you just have to dig through a bunch of crap to find it: but is it a triple? no way.)

Even Joe, in later life, admitted to being a bit embarrassed by that album.

Oh, and I played these yesterday. Unfortunately the Psychedelic Furs one has got a scratch in the quiet part of track 1 side 1, but apart from that it plays OK.

I quite like the Undertones singles, but an albums worth of his singing gives me the shits. But "Teenage Kicks"? well its genius. The cover's pretty cool too, huh? Suck on that Mrs GooGoo or whatever your name is. How dare you recycle memes from my yoof?!??!

No argument there, Cut the crap....was....well crap lol. Sad end to one of the greatest bands ever :(
