A new $20 helmet is a new $20 helmet. Probably better then a pushbike helmet on the kids when on their small dirt bikes?

But if you are expecting something with all the bells and whistles for that then...

id want more details than that... might be ok for kids on their small bikes, but wouldnt use one on the road.

look like snow mobile helmets to me - they have visors like that setup to stop fogging. Ask them what standards they meet.

Amazing what can be done with a balloon and paper mache :(

I'd just posted this question:
Hi, seems cheap for a helmet, do these meet NZ standards?

See if I get a reply.

I've asked again too...

Take a look at his previous auctions (via feedback) It seems it's a question he avoids.

Looking through other auctions of his (not the bouncy castles, although one of those on yer head would probably be as good) I see he has FGN helmets for $40.

Personally I would not buy safety equipment I can not try on, having just gone the exercise of purchasing a new helmet after trying various sizes of different manufacture I found even helmets listed as the same size to be different fitting.

A $20 helmet is perfectly fine, for a $20 head.

I see Steam bought the helmet and the seller said it meets European standards. I hope you got a good deal there Steam!

I guess for you it's only $20 so it's not too much of a risk, but if there's anything dodgy about the helmet I hope you will follow up and make sure other people aren't putting their heads at risk!

If it turns out you have any issues with the helmet, you may still have some protection under various trading laws. The Consumer's institute is a good place to start. Especially if there is any evidence that the seller is a commercial trader.

Here's what they said in a recent article (Nov 07):

"We have had concerns in the past about "commercial" traders using Trade Me to bypass the Fair Trading and Consumer Guarantees Acts by posing as hobby businesses. Trade Me is not a parallel universe where the consumer laws that apply to traders with brick-and-mortar outlets are suspended."

I agree the helmets look dodgy as and if they are a cheap Chinese model that doesn't conform to any safety standards then the trader needs to be hauled over the coals for it. However, price isn't always an indication of the quality you're getting. I recently had a couple of new helmets on trademe that were getting no interest shown in them. After relisting a few times I thought "Fuck it, I'll dollar reserve them - that will get some action going". Well, I got $31 for one of them and a whole $5 for the other. (These helmets had a RRP of $180). Learned a costly lesson that night.

I'm not going to wear it for me, it's just an emergency pillion helmet to leave at work / on the helmet lock on the bike.
It'll get knocked around, easy come easy go.
If I had a proper pillion / girlfriend then I'd care more and get a proper helmet for her.
But I don't, so meh, twenty bucks of brains it is.

Mine was free. Should I write to Messers Shoei, Arai, AGV et al and ask for a free helmet??

Didja know that Bell Helmets came up with the "Wear a $50 helmet if you've got a $50 head" slogan in response to falling sales because in the '70s their fibreglass helmets were much dearer than the 'new' moulded plastic ones people were buying?

My heid is overcapitalised, as I'd estimate it's worth only a handful of UnZud Shekelbux. So, in my case, even a $20 helmet would be too dear.

But (however!), because of the aforementioned almost-valueless gourd (now there's a thought - I could hollow out a gourd for use on my noggin!), I'm very susceptible to peer pressure, fashion trends and Sale! Up to 60% off!! shouty things, so I really blew things and bought a $399 helmet with an $86 tinted visor. :nono:

After my recent concussion I'm thinking about getting a nice Shoei, they fit my funny-shaped head better than any other one I've tried.
Never paid $600 for a hemet before.... it's a bit much... that's only $200 less than my most recent second-hand bike.
Still browsing though.

Shop around. My helmet's a Shoei.
But I tell you what, Mr Steam - I clonked my head not very hard at all (not hard enough to mark the helmet) wearing an AGV, and was very alarmed to have mild concussion for three days or so. I'm not saying it was the brand, just the fit/style/internal cushioning on that particular helmet. I'd expect to fare much better in my Shoei, which in real terms was about the same price.

I got concussion without my head even contacting the ground - the impact was enough to rattle my brain inside my skull. No helmet's going to stop that happening.

I recommend a large can of that expandable gap-filler squirted into your ears to stop the brain rattling issue.:pinch:

I have found both my AGV Ti-Tech's to be excellent quality. The padding is very comfortable and after my first one met the road I didn't hesitate to purchase the same helmet again. Hard impact, but only a minor crack in the shell was visible. I've never had any problems with either AGV Ti-Tech.

I also own a Shoei (now a back-up helmet) but would choose the AGV any day. But it’s about individual fit. Short of buying thicker padding, you can’t make a helmet fit you. Shoei, AGV, Arai, HJC, whatever…

I spent ages trying to find a helmet that fit correctly. Some shops told me ‘yes, that fits fine’ when I knew it was the wrong size or fit for my head shape. The first AGV I bought, the shop tried to sell me a size small but I insisted they order an extra-small. When it met the road, I was glad I ignored their advice and persisted. Another shop insisted they could *make* a particular helmet fit...

That would be an EXCELLENT idea, if I had a brain.
I went to a specialist a few years ago, and had a CT scan of my head. He examined the images, and said, "We didn't find anything".
Not a clockwork or steam engine, not even a hamster wheel without the hamster. :shit:

I was at a training track day run by Brian Bernard a while back, and he stressed the importance of a good DOT or SNELL approved helmet.

He also mentioned that $10 heads go into $10 helmets. Never a truer quote has been mentioned.

Someone should dob this prick in for selling the Trademe cheap helmets. Also avoiding questions re whether or not they are approved to NZ standards or not.

I would put then in the don't touch with a bargepole categorie.

Trademe doesn't care as long as an auction is not blatantly illegal or fraudulent. It's gone downhill since Sam sold it.

helmets are too much of a risk to buy from online, that's why you had a hard time selling it. No guarantee that it fits, let alone meeting safety standards. I'd never buy a helmet from anywhere other than a bikeshop I trust, where I can try a few on, see what I like

Sadly, the little pointy sex symbol by your username indicates you have a penis.
But hey, if you're a good-looking tranny / shemale with breasts, I'd be keen.
