Just made an offer on a crappy ol CB250 Dream twin thats been left outside for the last two years. Will have to cut the drive chain to move it. Mind you it's got good tyres fitted.

Ouch. Could cost more in the fix it bits than you wanted.
When they have been left out everything is stuffed. :gob: Cables and all. Never mind you will have the summer to work on it and you will have time to set-up a fire place in the garage for the winter :) Could be a long job

The font tyre on it is worth more what I'm paying for the thing thank goodness. The rear one has plenty of life too, so will go on the CB550 before it's next WOF. No cracking at all. Might even be able to convert the ol CB to Comstars  The reg/rectifier can go on the Gasaxe if needed (common fix). I was surprised to see the engine turns over ok. Worst comes to worst the scrap metal merchant will be getting a visit, so I wont loose out really.

Keep us posted with the restoration process, it's great to watch an old bike come back to life.

Keep us posted with the restoration process, it's great to watch an old bike come back to life. This thing may only be a wrecker I'm afraid. Now if it was a 400T (had one back around 1980) it may have had a chance :crybaby:

You made an offer on WHAT! Mate they should have paid you to take it away. The old 250/400s were nice looking bikes, but I can only assume that this was a moment of temporary insanity.

Must have been, I think. Nostalga makes one do some strange things sometimes. :o . Turns out the guy had a brand new lefthand muffler for it as well. I'll curtainly recover the princely wee sum I paid for thing. :scooter: Had to attack the chain with CRC and remove the front caliper to wheel the thing off the trailer. Here's a pick of the corroded beasty moss and all. What's that old Honda advertising slogan again? Oh, yes that's right-"You meet the nicest people on a Honda"

Yes, that was a selling point ;). And as a bonus it is actually louder than the OEM product :devil2: .

Worse thing about them was they were the same weight as the 400,which was a heavy bike...the 250 sucked.

Worse thing about them was they were the same weight as the 400,which was a heavy bike...the 250 sucked. Yeah the GSX250 and Kz250 of the era was curtainly the better of the 4-stroke 250 twins than the Hondas and Yamahas (another downsized 400). I prefered the CB250RS single myself.

Sum pics of the engine after 2 years exposer to the Manawatu weather and the generous sized seat (designed for mercan buts maybe? :killingme: ). I know my 400, which I bought new, was very comfortable. I use the commute to Havelock North from Hobsonville almost every weekend-things one do for love. Being 6' tall and really only learning the ropes I needed a bike with a decent seat height (still learning I might add). Seemed to keep up with a mates 860 gt duke no problems in the twisty bits up to the Puhio Pub  Removed the plugs and it looks like the previous owner had the nouse to spay oil into the bores and kick the thing over (yes it has a kick start-remember those?) every now and again.

Thanks. The more I look at the thing to more I'm thinking-Hmmm I have a spare caliper-breaklines- master cylinder assy, plenty of control cables (from previous wrecks), fresh oil, it's only a 5-10 minute walk to fill up the petrol container, the 4x4 is only about a metre away and has a heavier duty battery than the missus's car.............. Was surprised the inside of the tank isn't showing that much rust, maybe the lacquer we call fuel these days preserved it :msn-wink:

if you don't mind, how much did you pay for it? Put it this way. Less than the price of a new 19' 3.25inch front tyre or a new muffler.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FREIND-WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER END dum dum de dah dum diddy diddy dahh
-In other words I have very fond memorys of those old nails. :love2:
3 valve motors you could actually work on with full sized hands-yipeee
-You dont need me to tell ya mr bones that the 400 motor just slots in.
WAAAY back when -we discovered that to get around the licence thing we could buy an early cb400N and use the motor out of it.-and the cops never knew.
AHH -the memories --16 years old with a grunty honda dream machine between ya legs. a ratty pair of ex firemans boots and ex MOT gloves.
I thought I was THE MAN

I thought I was THE MAN IT'S ALIVE!!!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!! Yes folks the beast actually runs. Apart from a bit of smoke on the first start up its actaully fired up nicely with the aid of my old Integra battery and generous use of CRC . Yip XJF folks did just that. Also you could do the same with the old honda cb/cj and yamaha sohc/dohc XS series. Btw anyone got a servicable 450 Rebel engine lying around unloved ;).

CRC is good for starting? Got a recalcitrant CB250RS to start....

Would a spray in each cylinder do it?

CB250RSs with more than one cylinder? The one I have in the garden shed keeping the C50 company is definately a single, two headers and mufflers mind you. The CRC was used on the electical connections and ignition switch to encourage the wigglyamps to do their thing. Nice signiture btw

Found out what the clatter was from the engine was. The camchain guide was as sloppy as NC30_Chic in the packrack thread. Haven't taken the head off yet but I'm guessing the locating pin on the guide has come adrift. Might give Econahonda a ring and see if they have any after I've visited the m/c wreckers. The bloody things got me hooked. :argh: {Thinks get the friggin Intera sorted before you start another "project"}

Well in the end I got $48 in scrap and 2 new tires to go on the 550F or 250RS, as well as a some spares for a possible future custom project or "modern art". So it has worked out well. Will try and avoid impulse buying in future-yeah right!
