View Full Version : Bare metal??!!

Hey guys I've recently rubbed off my spray painted petrol tank with turps to see what was underneath the matt black and it's come up with half the normal CBR colours, but then there are reasonable sized patches of silver which seems to me as if it's just right back to the bare metal...
Now, if I leave it as is for a while is it a problem? Will it rust if it doesn't have paint as a protectant? I'm looking at getting a paint job anyway but need to fix up and sand the fairings a bit first so won't be too soon.
Cheers for any suggestions!

Best give it a squirt of metal primer at least.

PROTIP: it WILL rust, and that is BAD
PS Best give it a squirt of metal primer at least
i've got a can of gloss black no-primer-required rust kill paint if you don't have any, plus a can of primer. better yet go to mitre 10 and buy some so you can use it in the future. should be less than $20 bucks and it much better than having a rusting tank
on my dirtbike where plastics have rubbed/are rubbing paint off the frame i put down duct tape to stop it getting wet and protect it. cheaper and easier than removing the frame and powdercoating every few years, but less than ideal solution

Well is it steel or aluminium?

Well is it steel or aluminium?
can you even get aluminium tanks on factory bikes?
if it's the standard honda cbr tank it's steel

That's a good question. I thought the modern sportsbikes might have one, but not many do.
Those that do include the RC30, RC45, a few XT500s, BMW K, DR400, BSA 440 Victor, and some specifications (e.g. the famous Clubman) DBD34 Goldstar.
Back to your usual programme.

Alright well I've ended up spraying my entire bike with primer and chucked a few coats of rust protectant paint on it, just for now till I get a paint job, although if this turns out ok I may just leave it!
Will post pics later :2thumbsup

Alright!!! After an evening of sanding and spraying, here is the new night-rider! Will be interesting to see how the paint holds up over a few weeks as I did it all in like 2 hours, and didn't bother/couldn't work out how to take fairings off so just newspapered/masking taped the bike and went for it! For those who have seen my bike pre-paint tell me what you think! Or anyone for that matter :whocares:.
Well here goes...

i think you'd better watch out cause you're going to be invisible on the road, even to the cagers that are looking
i remember my black gsxr250 - first thing i did was buy some LED lights and reflective vinyl after nearly getting hit 3 times in the first week
but if you've masked her properly it doesn't look to bad... a bit more uniform than the old setup but alot less visible... next time use red to match the mudguard:niceone:

Hmmm yeah does it actually make a big difference? Just cause I'm black! Black was the only zinc protectant metal primer + coats I could find. Guess I could paint any colour over it though huh. I find red so tacky though! I thought about spraying that damn mudguard but would've been tricky, unless I manage to take it off...

maybe go yellow or white - and leave the mudguard; it's still good!
and yes it does make a huge difference as to visibility
there's even some acc statistic/study somewhere about how riders with white helmets are 50%(?) more visible than black ones

Just wear a day glo vest and you'll be sweet. They are cheap too.... Like your paint job :)

Alright I've just gone over it with a clear seal finish so hopefully it'll last longer than otherwise, and petrol spills hopefully wont spill it. I'm away all week so will be testing it out and seeing how it lasts when I get back on the uni ride this sat!
Sweet catch ya!

Sorry I'm late to the party!
Use rust converter on the metal or any little bits will keep growing. Primer is thick and easy to sand and helps the top coat stick but is porous and holds water so primer over bare metal is like a damp rag on it the whole time.
1) Rub with a steelo then brush on Rust converter.
2) Primer, Sand, Primer, Sand.
3) Top coat, Wet sand (fine), Top coat, Clear.
Looks like you had fun and it didn't take too much time or money so good on ya!
