well after having my little GZ in the shop for over 2 weeks and missing it dearly.. i jumped back on it and went for a ride, got me thinking about what mods could i do to this little beastie.....

so my 2 questions are

is it worth moding as its only a 250.... could i possibly put a bigger engine in it?

and what can i do to it?
wouldnt mind getting a new pipe for a louder purr safety reasons of course! hear me before you see me

Unless you have plans to keep her forever I'm inclined to say... save yer money and put it towards your dream bike (bigger... full license type bike) then make it go faster, more comfy etc.

007XX has put some money into her 250 and I think it's well worth it personally... so I guess it's a case of what you want to be riding longer term. Put your money into that

Oh shucks...:o Thanks but I actually never paid for the mods, she came with them (very much the reason I bought her instead of other VTR available at the time).

I am in the same connendrum as our lovely Fireball is...I positively adore my ride, but am starting to feel she's a little "small" ( I hope she can't somehow read this!)...so I've been considering transplanting a 400 engine in  and I wouldn't mind changing the lights, do a bit of a tail tidy and so on and so on...but is it worth it, if I get "the need for speed" after a couple of track days?

And then, I see a 675 Daytona... or a CBR600 ...Oh the Humanity!!!:weep:

Stop running the AA batteries flat, take those out, and put in a car battery...(dont forget to get an inverter) no thats not a sex toy Fireball!

Adjust ya rear shocks, depending on what kind of riding you will be doing, maybe get some black leather tassles for the handgrips a crusier style vest and a patch.

Personally I wouldnt invest coin into a 250, because when it comes to reselling it you wont get it back.

Save your coin for your next upgrade. Then personalise.

Oh, yes. You will indeed.

Methinks ma'am needs a reassuring trip around some motorcycle shops to sit upon and appreciate some of the current lightweight cruiser offerings.

i advise you to spend as little as possible as i'm sure you'll get something bigger when your licence allows

for now perhaps gear it down for cheap performance gains, if it has the legs to fathom it

Have a look around at bigger capacity bikes and get some opinions from other people who are around the same height as you. You may find that there are a reasonable number of bikes you might want to upgrade to, or you may find that your 250 is the tool for the job and you're likely to be hanging on to it for a while.
If you decide that you are likely to hang on to it, some comfort/aesthetics modifications could be in order.
I've been spending a bit of time and money getting my new 250 set up the way I want it, because I know I'll be hanging onto it for few years.

Mod it if you want to. "Worth it" is up to you.

I have a rather modified 250 in my garage. It was fun and very flash now. A bit hard to sell though as the mods haven't helped the value it seems.

If your serious about modding the current motor, you could always put a pod filter on the carb and do the exaust, this means re-jetting though, but the engine will feel smoother and slightly more powerful as it will be breathing easier.

Really though, I would track down a GN400 motor and put that in, instant increase in power and torque and should go in relatively easy.

I can vouch for that. I have a VT750 C2 (see profile pic). I'm a touch under 5'6" (on a good day) and it's the first road bike over 250cc that I've found I can sit on and get both feet flat on the ground. With a bend in my knees.
:2thumbsup
The bike might not be what you're after, but it's proof that they are out there.
Some of the Boulevards have a good seat height, too, and are nice bikes as well!

It is a source of constant amazement to me the number of riders that should be carrying a step ladder with them cos their bike is too tall.:pinch:

Sounds like me when I ride off-road.... on a XR200 or 250 ! - almost need to do a flying start/running jump ! All good once I'm on it and moving - grip the tank with the knees, slide the back wheel around a bit and hold on grimly !

Sometimes it even looks like I know what I'm doing!

Perfect size for a beer holder! (how flat is your head?) :dodge:

Seriously though...touching the ground and holding it up is nice, but don't forget about being able to get the bastard up again should the unthinkable happen (just being realistic here).

As Dan said, I would go and sit on a few bikes...also lay a few down (with someone around for assitance) and try to lift them back up. Living in denial has never helped anyone when all by yourself on a ride.

Just my 0.00002c...

One trick you can do to make a bike a bit more suitable for a shortie, is to replace the foam in the seat with a thinner lay of high density foam and get it recovered, that was done to my YZF when I bought it since the previous owner was a short dude.

Pod filter mod, Hell yes.

However it is a little bit tricky, try and find the pods that fit. I Have done this mod to my bike. I don't have the correct pods, the correct pods cost $123 each and I need 4 of them :S.

Rejetting carbs is easy, but hard to get it right. If that makes sence.

Smoother? very much doubt it, my bike is running alot rougher at low speeds (take off and roll on at >50km/hr).

Faster? Hell yes.

Sounds better? HEEEEEELLLLLLL YEAH!!

One thing to do with the pod mod (and I havnt done this) is to get the valves adusted to be pretty tight in tolerance.

Hmmmm...reminds me of my first boyfriend...

The thing is though, I really struggle to "judge" my own capabilities as a rider, and I always said I would only upgrade if I was skilled enough and had actually outgrown my 250...bit of a catch 22 really <_<

GZ, hmm, thats a GN engine yeah? Drill out the rivets holding in the baffle, buy some pop rivets to put it back in for WOF's. Should breathe a bit better, jet the carb, modify the airbox (hacksaw), whip off the head and use a hardened grind stone to grind out the ports (probably should get someone that knows what there doing for this bit), while the engine is apart, yank out the bore and piston. Get polishing, go through the sand paper ranges till you can see your pretty cruiser riding face in the bore and on the side of the piston (warning, you WILL pull funny faces in your piston cause it makes your face look all stretched out) re-assemble everything. Oh, oops, jet the carb at the end.

If its an old engine you should flush it. Drain oil, put in kerosene, crank engine over (DONT fucken rev it), kerosene-turnover-repeat till kerosene comes out clear. Feed it castrol GTX 20-50

Put on a quarter throw throttle kit.

Buy a pit bike turbo off trademe, bolt that bitch on there, get some custom pipes made up or just have a dump pipe coming off the turbo.

Get rid of everything you dont need, Big arse headlight? dont need it, replace with small arse headlight. Battery? starter motor? nah, replace battery with a big arse capacitor, you will have to roll start your bike but hey, it will be lighter...

Or you could just wait till you get your full and then buy a bigger bike...

If I were you I wouldn't bother modding your 250, 250's are there as a temporary measure, everyone wants to get a bigger bike, its just how it is. Modding a 250 is a waste of time personally, as they generally tend to change ownership more often than any other CC of bike, although I could be horrendously fucking wrong (I could care less).

So no, don't mod it, save your money and either:
A: use it on a bigger bike or
B: get some better riding gear (If you need it)

my 2 cents
