How will the new road demerit measures affect your riding. A quick poll. Personally, against all my better judgments, faced with the new demerit system I'd be more inclined to run. These new measures are designed to target young inexperienced drivers, yet we're all being targeted.

Not enough info as yet. These are still "proposals" remember.

Totally support the red-light runner issue/punishment.

+1 on the red light runners. About time. Now they need to work on cellphone use and chicks applying makeup etc. In fact its mostly chicks who use their cellphones too txting etc, in fact they should ban women driving all together.

just kidding all you blossoms out there.

I already stick fairly close to the speed limits having got the racer out of me years ago. Now I actually see the scenery. Life is good, I like life!

It's the banning of the detectors that I'm most concerned about.

I'm interested to know if they will confiscate them if they are found and if they'll use the technology that picks up that you're using one.

Yeah I don't get done enough to lose my licence so same but cheaper for me! Yay! Agree with the red light running, should have been more of a penalty ages ago. Needs to be more of a step up for repeat offenders. One DIC, not cool but a lesson. A few or onother one soon after, double the penalty or jail time?

Yea,no change for me ,im just worried about the radar detectors being banned :2guns:,if i got pulled up for speeding ,not matter the fine it would be enough to make me stop for a while ;) but i think increased demerits is a good idea as it will slow down these bloody boy racer idiots and hit them hard (no more doing community work to work out of a fine :angry2: )

I would have no reason to run with just one ticket in 15 going on 16 years riding... however last ticket to guarantee loss with average or better chance?

I can't guarantee it would not cross the mind. Not sure I would run. But faced with :buggerd::buggerd: either way.

I usually run now.....so no real change for me.
It won't have the effect they want if it's the boi racers they're after, no-one thinks of loosing their license anyhoo, and most of 'em know they will if they're caught racing/ skidding etc.
What it will do is make it harder for those that live on the road, reps, truckies etc..... a couple of oopsies and no license/job :sweatdrop

Do you really think so?
Seeing as how most of them are driving with a suspended license or outside their licence conditions anyway I really don't think they could give two s.

Any links around to some decent info on what the proposals are...I've only seen a couple of media articles, which very typically extremely vague on details.

Yesterday afternoon, old duffer driving at 40kph in middle of Onawa Rd, p!ssing me off. Lights go to red, he continues and almost takes out a CBR on green lights out of Mokoia Rd. This dude should not be on the road and a law that takes him out must be good.

As we stand, Police are just in it for the money. Road safety is not a priority. Hope this changes real soon!

No change for me ... I've already given up speeding,

There's just too many highway patrols and cameras around. Gone are the days of 5hr 35min trips from Paremata roundabout to East Tamaki turnoff on the Auks motorway (average speed 107.6kmh) :(

Oh and for those voting to run ... haven't you guys worked out that radios (and Eagle) are faster than your bike?????? Prats.

Oh and did you take his rego, time date and locations and lay a complaint???? Before you mouth off about the money thing  you would see that they follow that stuff up and with good evidence they will prosecute.

I wouldn't run in AKL. But in the backwater parts of the Manawatu maybe. By the time the eagle got there from Auckland, then refueled, I'd have made it home and completed a beer and a service. Radios might be more of a challenge though.

The thing that concerns me is that the 1-20k over the 100kmh limit. I thought there was a small amount of leeway 10k? to allow for speedo error or did that go long ago? Otherwise no problems with the changes.

Can't say it will affect my speed too much , I'm usually fairly close to the speed limit anyway. Chook chaser/adventure bike is looking a good option, I ride to get away from idjits & there are getting to be too many on the blacktop now:eek:

aren't detectors Passive, how are they going to know ??? .. what freaks me out is the fine if your caught using one, i read that it was $150,000.. that can't be right, but shit .. if it is .. i'll be running, that's for damn sure.

Read the fineprint Waylander - you will find that after two licence offences your car is impounded - same goes for bikes. That will hit them were it matters.... losing their pathetic little toys.

I'd be glad to see less of the little punks. Next step - crush the cars. They have started doing this overseas and making the racers watch as their pride and joy gets turned into scrap. Suckers.

No ?
Well they'll be as successful enforcing that law as the are enforcing the requirement to indicate at roundabouts

It's the banning of detectors that upsets me the most. Not that I own or use one, as I think that they're largely a waste of money and just something else to faff around with. It's just that yet again we have another example of the State further intruding into our daily lives. I feel like buying a radar detector in protest.

Well that's a coincidence Mr H. It seems I may have little use for mine soon. Along with 10,000 others. They should be quite cheap to pick up next year!

Start the bidding at $500 please.

this is just another failed attempt waiting to happen by the government, they don't have enough police now to enforce the road rules so what is going to be different when the new rules come into effect, don't get me wrong i think it is great they are going to try it but it won't make any difference. If this is aimed at the boy racers they are not going to give a shit because half of them are running around without a licence and owe so many $$ in fines and if they get there car impounded daddy will buy them another one anyway. Hope it works but i DOUBT IT

Those making the law seem to be ignoring one important fact, that the young they are supposedly targeting are full of testosterone and itching to impress the girls, and for many many many generations have been doing it with fast cars and stupid stunts. It's what young people do, and is it all that bad?

Done on public roads yes! But in an environment were they can only hurt themselves, no! So if this is all about safety there is a solution in my eyes, provide places for young car hoons to go and strut their stuff. Many of us bikers are choosing to take our bikes to the track to get it out of our system. In my case this has most definately slowed me down on the road. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the country where we had paddock hacks and practiced donuts to our hearts content, city kids need somewhere to go in my opinion.

As for pinning the red light runners..... Bout bloody time!!!!!!

red light runners, they need to be stopped,

BUT (and a big but) This is what I see happening.

Late at night, no traffic at all, bike pulls up to the lights, cant set it off. Rides through the red (after checking each what way)

75 demerits, good bye licence.

Like in Australia where the cops have their own drag cras etc?

There needs to be a North/West and a South Drag and Burnout area ( and yes, Meremere is too far away) that is open at least 4 nights a week. If I had the capital I'd open one myself! Instead of guys lining each other up at the lights they'd pull up and know that in 30 mins and for $5 each or whatever the real story would be told without a chance of losing their licence.

That'd be awesome for bikes too. Whenuapai Air base for race park!! Hell yeah! The govt are trying to ignore people with an interest in cars/bikes and imposing the idea that it's not a valid interest. There are two equestrian racetracks in Auckland that I know of in good spots. (Ellerslie and New Lynn) and a lack of car/bike area's.

I'm already nervous as hell on the road, and I'm one of the more moderate law breakers on here. Can't be sure what the extra fear is going to do to me. Running isn't really an option for me for heaps of reasons. Chances are it will be as it is now: pick my moments, take my chances and pay my money.

yes get the red light runners and then the stop sign runners and those pricks that dont give way at give way signs most people dont know but give way really means stop not slow down then boot it.

then they should bring in third party insurance and high penalties and cost for the points on your licence.

your licence is a privalidge you paid and earnt it so dont go and throw it away you will miss it when its gone and it wont do you any good crying from a prison cell or hospital bed for thinking if only i didnt run that kid might still be alive my bike would still be ok and i wouldnt be here just my wallet a little lighter, bikes and cars can be replaced life cannot you take the chance you pay the price, and if you cant do the time dont do the crime your choice.

it wont affect me like all i like a little speed but if its going to cost me my freedom i will slow down.

Yep, same for me. Agree too with the red light cameras; just wish there were more of them! For people who moan about revenue gathering regarding speeding, the answers lie in their own hands (right hand or right foot). I do enjoy going faster than 100 every now and again (my only vice on the road that I can think of) but accept that if I'm caught I have noone to blame but myself. Running red lights though is strictly for morons.

Actually give way means stop IF the way is not clear. If no one else is around you don't have to stop, and if visibility is good enough you don't even have to slow down.
