Define 'fun'.

Fun i.e. enjoyment. Offer advice if and when required but most people don't appreciate being judged or babied.

I may yet get to one - if somebody (or) two had a tank-cam running during the ride I'd be prepared to give a critical revue of the riding on film.

And before the wise-arses start: Not to give out tickets or crap like that but to show the rider(s) what they were doing wrong or how they were leaving themselves open to danger, it would even help those not on film who were doing the same things at times and were unaware of the consequences of their actions.

Only one let down with that SD is that in the group ride that I'm going to hatch, the tank-cam would only catch the person who had it and their riding partner (I'm thinking of putting together a ride styled like an orientation course)

If any rider wants to better themselves they would be better doing a proper course as mentioned above rather than taking advice from a stranger that may not be qualified to give it. In my time riding I've heard a LOT of BAD advice that should never have been said. There are also many riders out there that rate themselves far higher than they should.

I'm not saying I'm better than anyone else, there will always be someone better and someone worse. The main point should be to have fun and get there in one piece.:niceone:

Only problem here with that is that some who've done & try to promote said courses are blatantly thumbing their noses at the golden rules of what said courses try to promote.

We're trying to minimize the chances of accidents or the such like.
Fun is a loosely used term, It's better to get out on the road & enjoy the ride, discipline and awareness is lacking with a few. Signs of nervousness and lack of calculating what & where risks were popped up last Weds.

Duvoucelles (spelling?) sounds good to me! IMAO there should be more fun focussed on these rides....

Duvauchelle is how it's spelt on my map. That's 3 for (including me) and none against so far so that works for me.

I am also starting to lean toward tending to agree with El Stevo in regards to my focus is moving toward enjoying the ride and making less of a fuss or ignoring the fuss around the ride.
I'm tending to think I'll go at a pace that is cruisy and still enjoyable to me, nice and easy and doesn't smash any speed limits in or out of town.
I know that a lot of the regulars can easily go faster, but I would like to think it'll be a pace that the smaller bikes and more novice riders could still mostly cope with just fine, or at least not be very far behind.
Will be interesting to see whether I am moving through or falling behind the general group.

My feelings and opinion on the WNRs change like the wind...

I'm always keen to go to douvocelles.
Phoenix and I went for a ride yesterday with some people from work to the bealey pub. Just happened that the Triumph club (Karla you'll be in on that) were also doing the same ride at the same time so we joined forces.
I was the only 250cc rider there, and though I was nearing the back of the pack I was not left behind. What the others had in the straights, I made up for in the corners. My lines were nice and my confidence has come along way since I started riding with the wed group. I felt heaps better, so for me the wed rides have been a great help so I will be eager the keep advancing on that.

I'm always a fan of going to Duvauchelle too, apart from the long straights most of the first two thirds of the ride, where I tend to get left behind on account of a) not being willing to speed and b) not being able to speed anyway! Still, I could just cruise along at 100 and will get there in the end... it's a bit on the boring side until you get to the hill.

Have been following this thread.. & wonder how it is that you can bleet on & on about minimising the chances of accidents, discipline, awareness of risks, etcetc.. & yet YOU felt it necessary to take off from a set of lights, in the middle of very busy central Riccarton, in the middle of the day, with me on the back.. & fang it to hit 160ks in a 50k zone..... :stupid: obviously showing NO thought for my life/safety in the slightest :weird: or any thought for my kids... <_< & yet you felt you could bleat on at me about how dangerous doing the have a go days was...

maybe you need to practice what you preach! :spanking:

Duvauchelle it is then. I love that hill. I'm with TA in regards to these rides. Ultimately it's each persons own responsibility to ride responsibly and to choose how they will behave on the ride. I will go at my own pace (which is pretty slow) and others should do the same. They shouldn't try to outride their abilities. I feel like a broken record!!

Anyway, I want people to enjoy themselves. Someone trying to ride faster than their abilities isn't going to have much fun, but in the same vein someone being forced to ride slower than they want to isn't gonna have much fun either. That said I will always take it easier on a Weds ride and leave the "blats" for another time.

I want to make 1 change for this weeks ride though. I think we should have a volunteer for a tail end charlie. This person will ride at the back for the ride and ensure noone gets left behind. I know some people have been doing it anyway, but I think the whole group should know who the TEC is so, for example if someones planning on going another way or leaving the ride early they can let the TEC know. Also the rest of the group can see that everyone has arrived at the re-group points (or the destination) as the TEC has arrived.
It doesn't really work on the way home cause people bugger off all over the place and the group splits up alot but thats ok.

So...any volunteers for this week? (we'll rotate cause noone wants to do that every week)

anyways, the bikes hanging from a hook in the garage with no front end on it, preping for Woodstock.
Fixed the slipping clutch, thanks to the person who suggested washers :niceone:
ended up using spark plug washers .40 thou thick, perfect , no more clutch slip .....yet!
Enjoy the ride guys, will be thinking of you all keeping the rubber rolling,
Dont forget that windrow of shingle at the top of the hill its caught many a ride that one!

is a little bit far for me,....pifft... had that conversation before...It's still only about an hour and 10 to 20 minutes each way from BK.
Diamond Harbour via Evans pass is claimed 1 hour 10 minutes and we went a bit past that last week to Port Levy.
(all times approximated by google maps of course)

Ah, but of course

Yep, that works for me. I much prefer going that way (like the time I accidentally diverted two thirds of the group up over Dyers Pass and over Gebbies.... :pinch:) than going out through Halswell, so yep, that's got my vote. Meal at Duvauchelles again? And do we have to ring ahead of time and advise them of our arrival en masse?

Bikes not exactly going to shit hot at the moment. It consumed 1L of oil in 15km's today.

Im pretty sure I know where its dripping from. The only problem is that it only drips when the bikes running and now it wont start and stay running. The oils to low I assume. Makes a sewing machine sound to  Ahh well. Shouldnt be to hard to fix. Heres hoping its just the oil filter cover seal leaking, not the belly pan.

Well.. can officially say I have been on a Wed night ride now!! :Punk:

Rode down from Nelson today.. got into Hoon Hay bout 5.50.. dumped my gear, off to fuel up & straight to the meeting point! & whadda WICKED turnout!!!!! 30ish?? bikes!!!!

VERY cool being able to put a heap more faces to names!! :2thumbsup great to meet you guys & girls (those who I got to talk to anyway.... so many people, so little time... ) most awesome to put faces to names of those with whom I have been communicating with for some time!

Off through town to the tunnel & around the bays.. (bought back many memories of my years in ChCh!! ) regroup at Wheatshief (however the hell it's spelt! ) & off towards Akaroa. Felt a bit rusty on the hill.. but I spose it HAS been over 6 years since I have been that way.. ;)

Bloody hungry by the time we got to Duvauchelle's.. (hadn't eaten since Springs Junction @ 2pm!!) had a good feed & catchup with the crew, then headed back towards town bout 9pm. Got SERIOUSLY bug splattered round the bays!!!!! :shit:

All up.. have done about 600ks today!! & feeling rather jaded bout now.. so I'm off to :zzzz: might even have a sleep in tomorrow!!!

Till next time!! take care out there!!! :ride:

Missed the ride this week, I've been negotiating the windy Island up North. Back to Chch to dust my beauty off for the weekend - poor baby, shut up inside and left all alone and neglected.

I second Fireliv - I'm enjoying the Wednesday night rides, good confidence builder and it's great to have something to look forward to. I don't mind too much that people have different levels of skill. We were all beginners once :)

Yeah thanks everyone, was a great ride, first time over there on the 11 and very enjoyable...aside from a couple of corners where I went in a little too hot...perhaps a little too quick while I'm still getting used to the bike.

Feels good growing into the bike more and more, the potential of the machine is beyond mine. I heard her whisper to me "come on, let's follow them" as the SV650 and Ducati flashed past down the hill to Little River...I replied "no, no, no, no, no". :-)

I had a great ride last night. That's the best run I've ever had from Little River to Duvauchelle - only came across one car in my way the whole time, carved up the corners really nicely, was in the groove... even touched the exhaust pipe down around one corner - whoops! Didn't think I was that close to touching down. I'm glad it didn't make my rear wheel skip though, that could have been messy... :puke:

Great to finally meet you too Jen, had been wondering if you'd turn up! As soon as you turned into BK, though, I knew it had to be you. Great effort for making it even though you'd only just gotten into town after several hours and several hundred kms riding!

The radar will lock on to the closest TWO targets, but the copper aint stupid he kmows 20 odd bikes wont pull over and they wont own up even if the cop knows his bikes.

I had a great ride last night. That's the best run I've ever had from Little River to Duvauchelle - only came across one car in my way the whole time, carved up the corners really nicely, was in the groove... Same here!! No cars, was brilliant!

even touched the exhaust pipe down around one corner - whoops! Didn't think I was that close to touching down. I'm glad it didn't make my rear wheel skip though, that could have been messy... :puke:Easy tiger, I think the poor NZ is giving all she has to give!

Great to finally meet you too Jen, had been wondering if you'd turn up! As soon as you turned into BK, though, I knew it had to be you. Great effort for making it even though you'd only just gotten into town after several hours and several hundred kms riding! What can I say... hard core biker :Punk:

was going around a corner around blenheim couple of days ago, and around the corner comes a brand new Buel carving it up realy well, he realy was in the groove.....asphalt was a bit to hot and gave way.....:eek5:
He was lying so flat already he only dropped another inch and slid, and slid, and slid ...:yes:hitting the wood/steel barrier:bye:
I stopped ready to aplly first aid..ring emergency services etc...:sweatdrop
By the time I had my bike on stand, the rider crawled up and took his bike, pushing it of the road.....
His leather jacket saved the day, his normal jeans were shredded a bit here and there...apart from that he was ok.Txting his mate to pick him up..
The fairing protected him, only saw indicator and gearlever missing....

The radar will lock on to the closest TWO targets, but the copper ain't stupid he knows 20 odd bikes wont pull over and they wont own up even if the cop knows his bikes.

Yep you are right, it will lock on to the closet two. The best defence is simply to say "Are you sure it couldn't have missed my bike and locked on the bike behind me? Are you certain you were tracking me and not another bike?".

With a car this doesn't work too well, since a car is large enough to block the reading from the vehicle behind. With a bike it's entirely possible the radar misses the lead bike (or 2) and picks up the bike behind that. This of course all depends on how close the bikes are (formation). The key here is that it raises the *question* of accuracy and the *possibility* that the radar lock is on something/one else.

If you do get pulled over in this case, be NICE, but forceful - it wasn't me - are you SURE it was me?

PS: Looking fwd to joining you as soon as I am in home in ChCh on a Wed.

Not at all we know you wont leave us!

Tris and I were talking about it the other day. We were talking about how in Wellington the more experienced guys/girls that showed up to the wed ride knew that they were going to be with learner riders and knew the ride would be cruisier. Those that were interested in speed went to the thurs ride, and of course many would go to both.

Now that the cruisy ride seams well established definately worth looking at a ride to cater for those speedy people out there.

as you and I know its a bit of a ride to BK and then afta the run home again.
Especially as winter nights get closer. And dont say HTFU....we already are!
Is it possibile for us north cant guys to know where the ride is going to?

Seems to me to be a bit silly to ride to BK then back out here when we could meet at Woodend / Waikari / Rotherum even

Oh yes, this I know. Don't worry, I wouldn't have posted unless I knew it was all under control :msn-wink: Still a lot of crap in general to get sorted, though, so we'll be kept busy the next couple of weeks!

Took us (me mum helped!) about a month or two to finalize my place!

Look on the bright side, as a home owner your handyman skills are bound to go up! I did plastering and painting in my kitchen over Xmas holidays - first time to!

Hope you got a good size garage for all the tools.

And room for a beer cooler :apint:

Edit -

What I meant to say was a room that is a beer cooler.

Yes, pity we couldn't settle on a route online beforehand this week, but I will never complain at Duvauchelle.

Here's a few rough pics... after a while I guess they all look the same from one trip to the next...

1-at BK
2- BK
3- Gebbies pass
4- more Gebbies
5- Little River
6- climbing toward the Hilltop.

1-decending toward Barrys Bay
2- same
3- Arriving at Duvauchelle
4- ready to go home.

That was a nice ride indeed... I had been hoping to ride to akaroa during the afternoon (heard lots of good things about it), and work delayed me enough not to be able to... then I get to ride it that evening :woohoo: Interesting weather tho, I think I got to experience all in one ride. Sun, Rain, Cloud, Fog (ok, low level cloud, but same effect of almost zero visibility)

Ta to phoenixgtr and others for getting me back to my street... real men don't need maps... just more time :shifty:

No worries mate. It was good to meet ya. You're gonna have a blast on the south island roads!!

Pretty good ride last night. I've realised how much rain doesn't slow me down. :shit: Maybe thats a bad thing... It's just that when I was living in Wellington I used to ride every day - rain, hail or shine, so I got a fair bit of wet weather experience.

Next week it's Waitangi Day

I'll be up for that, as long as people don't go too fast on the straight and boring bits... :nono:

Mrs Oakie and I tend to just amble along at about the speed limit or slightly above even on the straight and boring bits. I'm sure there are a few others like that around too. Perhaps it would be a good ride to split into fast group / slow group?
Mrs Oakie does seem to be developing a sporadic 'need for speed' though. She suggested we go out to Kaiapoi on Saturday morning just so we could come back on the motorway and go fast. The way she said "I need to go fast" with that wee sparkle in her eye told me so much about where she's at with her biking..... :2thumbsup

That was a lot of fun - apart from the wet!! I gues no one else went home via Gebbies, I waited 10 minutes at Teddington then tootled home on my lonesome.
Quite spirited between Little River and McQueens Valley Road eh JAS-1100. If you'd like some of your oil back there appears to be a light coating on my fairing and helmet :2thumbsup

Might see yers next time around

LOL SkinnyBM... we went via Gebbies/Dyers on the way home, but was messing about swapping bikes with Helen at Cooptown after most had left, and again near Teddington. By the time we got there we could have easily been 15minutes behind you since you had a 'spirited' ride.

Just thinking ahead... anyone up to doing the Waipara Tavern or Greta Valley Tavern kind of places for a destination? I'm still resisting Biggles2000 with the Leader Valley loop, but with a conversation I had last night I got the impression one or two others thought the Leader was dooable, maybe not for every one, but we don't have to please all the people all the time, and obviously there are some that would like to do something completely different once at least. Then there is those northernish people saying come our way so we can hook up too.

Next week I may be doing a Molsworth and Rainbow loop so not sure where I'll be at what time, so not sure I'll be there, but then if the ride should happen north, I may make it to the destination in time for tea. Otherwise give it a week or two for the idea to grow on people.

An interesting ride would be....
Gather at Marshlands BP, or close to it.
Marshlands road to Lower Styx road
Lower Styx Rd past Spencerville to Brooklands, then left onto Kaiaga,
Over the Old waimack bridge, continue on old SH1 to Kaiapoi,
Left at the First roundabout, over the motorway, then Lineside road to Rangiora.
North route out of Rangiora past the show grounds, then via Ashley, Seddon, Baicran and the back way into Amberley.Refuel at The mobil 24hr if needed
North out of Amberley to the Waipara Junction, then left to Weka Pass.
At Waikari turn right at the Pub onto Scargill road
This will take you to Greta Valley for a good meal and Sweet easy ride home via SH1 from there.
Lots or nice twisty bits around Spencerville, reasonable straights to Weka Pass, and 27k of fun from Waikari to Greta Valley ( my practice road )
Fast and slow ridrs should enjoy this, but would advise Greta Pub you are comming to ensure cook is on duty.

Now that's the kind of thing I had in mind, except the meeting place must always be BK, Moorhouse Ave at 6pm, depart 6:30pm as per post #1 so that people can turn up on the night without having to wade through the entire thread just to find the current time and place each week.
Now need to stick that on a map with estimated time and distance to stick it in to perspective.

If only 3 or 4 people decided to split off and do this it would still be a good ride and with current numbers still leave more than enough to go do other stuff if the rest wanted.

31st January 2008, 17:02
North route out of Rangiora past the show grounds, then via Ashley, Seddon, Baicran and the back way into Amberley.
We did that once just to be a bit different from SH1 and I found it quite boring. Long straights and nothing much to make it memorable. I'd rather just go up the highway straight to Waipara and save a bit of time for nattering at the eventual destination.

Going up through Spencerville and Kaiapoi is still nice though.
Estimate 105km going to Gretta Valley that way round and 80km straight home to BK. Google estimates 1hour 18 minutes to get back but I disagree with their time estimate for the Scargill Valley so cant go by them for that. They have always been a little conservative but now they're being ridiculous...

yeap agree with oakie and transalp re the rangiora deviation.
The time given for the scargill valley road may be so long because its a twisty upsy downsy type road with some cheaky corners.
A cage would fall off it easy at 100kph, not because of the tightness of the corners, but the bumps that appear in funny places.
Its a fun ,but you have to read the road or get airborne at speed in two spots!

Watch out for the Public Holiday extra charges on food on Waitangi day.
I was thinking, it is likely I will be turning off through the Pyramid Valley on the way back from Hanmer so even if the ride goes North you probably will not see me as we would normally turn off before Waikari and don't get back to the main road untill practically Waikuku.

Like I said, give it a few weeks to let the idea grow on people, especially with the day run already going to Kaikoura earlier the same day this coming week.

Hey neigbour
I think we need to know where they are going each week,
as you and I know its a bit of a ride to BK and then afta the run home again.
Especially as winter nights get closer. And dont say HTFU....we already are!
Is it possibile for us north cant guys to know where the ride is going to?
I was unde the impression it was out our way this week, but could not confirm that.
Seems to me to be a bit silly to ride to BK then back out here when we could meet at Woodend / Waikari / Rotherum even
At least if I give whoever is in the know my Cell phone number you could text me!

Hope you had a really good ride tonight peoples

Mention was made of a run out to Greta Valley a few weeks ago. Some of the Northern KBers(Subike & VTRRR etc) said they'd like to hook up.......:scooter::scooter:

Forecast lookin good.Thoughts anyone???

North somewhere sounds good to me although I need a new front tyre before I do a decent run. I still reckon that when we head north, the rally point needs to be on the north side of the city (Belfast Burger King just to be consistent?) or else you won't get out of town before 7pm and that we start a separate thread for that ride about a week beforehand for anyone who doesn't check this thread and just shows uo at Moorhouse BK. My 5c.

Perhaps if we are going to have a seperate ride north, maybe we should make it another night so I can do both rides ;)

I like your thinking Spuds.

I'm a big fan of consistency in this ride especially with the meeting place and time. However I am keen on riding somewhere a little different for a change

Ok
If a ride north were to take place on a different day then there would be no reason to meet at BK Moorhouse and it would be under a different thread anyway so that's all good.

If a ride north did start at Moorhouse BK on a Wednesday I dare say there'd be a rally point before you reached the motorway?

Sounds good. I guess either the BK at Belfast, or the Pegasus like was done for the Waitangi Day rides (it has a large carpark, so plenty of parking space) would do. See:

Of course the pub in the map is in fact the Belfast Tavern, as far as I know it is not, nor ever has been called the Pegasus.
The reason I suspect for your confusion would be that it is also known as 'The Peg' which relates back to something to do with it being a mile marker (like the 9 mile marker peg to do with surveys and distance from the Chch Square) of some possible historical significance.

The above info is of course just hear, say, but I am confidant enough in the source to repeat it here.
Cheers

Oh boy, haha. Thanks for clearing that up :).

So yeah, have plotted the route to Greta Valley (roughly) on the map via SH1 - there aren't any real alternate routes are there? About 140km round-trip.

At this stage I will be turning up for this one. :Punk: Are we changing the meeting place for this one or still the Morehouse BK????
If its changing for this one then a forum on front page should be started to let every one know.

Oakie
19th February 2008, 07:59
Probably not a great idea to go changing anything this late. Perhaps for next week?
I guess if you don't see it on a separate thread in any particular week, it's BK Moorhouse as usual (said the guy who's only been on one of these rides:innocent:).

Transalper

There are a few people who are showing up through word of mouth and are not reading the forum every week so I would hate to hear the meeting time or place had changed just because you went north, even with a weeks notice.

Apparently the guys on the boat couldn't handle it without me and broke the bloody mast (or a stay at least ;) ).

Bingo! This illustrates my point exactly. By not being flexible on occasion with the start place, you start to limit the destinations you can reasonably travel to and back from in an evening in directions which don't include the Port Hills (think speed required to get there and time of return home).
Remember that that the whole ethos of the ride is an evening cruise which is learner friendly so it's not a good thing IMHO to have to either hurry to get somewhere or rule out a good destination simply because it takes half an hour of riding time to clear the city from Moorehouse when travelling north.

phoenixgtr
20th February 2008, 09:22
Your point is very valid, but so is Transalpers. We have quite a few who show up by word of mouth and many others who don't check this thread because they already know where to go and when. We don't want to screw that up

Oakie
20th February 2008, 10:18
OK. That's cool. As long as the option is recognised I'm happy with that.
Don't forget though ... 'flexibility is your friend' :sunny: (but now that I think of it that could just as easily be ... 'Consistency is your friend' too.) Happy now? You've got me arguing with myself! :Pokey::spanking::Playnice::jerry:

Speaking of rides north, Mrs Oakie are planning a sedate cruise to Kaikoura and back on Saturday so if anyone sees a couple of black Hondas wandering along at speeds that won't upset the constabulary, that'll be us.

Mr Triple
20th February 2008, 14:36

Your point is valid but here is a little thought to add to that if it takes 30 plus minutes to get out of the city and at that time of the day you are getting heavy traffic heading north as all the folks who live in Kaiapoi etc head home, heading north would be great if you live out that side if you coming from the southern side of the city it could be difficult to get to meeting point by 6:30.

Your suggestion of having another night to go north was great, what would be nice is if occasionally we could not plan a ride through the gorges or north on either a public holiday or weekend (I know not everyone has weekends I certainly don't)

I think this is the main thing now the ride has taken on a life of its own with folks turning up thanks to word of mouth.

so after all this
Is the ride tonight going north
is it leaving BK at 6.30
Is the expected destination point gretta valley taven
is the route via Weka Pass Waikari and the Scargill valley road to Gretta Pub?
If so I will see you all at Amberley War memorial at 7 30 tonight!
OK?

Ah feck it! I knew I should have checked that thread again this afternoon instead of finishing the payroll off. Wouldn't have made a difference anyway I suppose as I can't leave town until I get my new front tyre on tomorrow night anyway.
Hope you guys had a good night.

Spuds1234
20th February 2008, 21:39
Was a great night.

One group headed off to Doversher? The rest of us (ie all the cool people) headed up north to Greta Valley.

It was an awesome ride and plenty of fun was had by all. Atleast those that went north anyway.

To those guys on the smaller 250's, Casualty and the guy with a seat for a tank and a tank for a helmet holder, how did you guys go getting back into town. I know things would have been close for Casualty. How much gas did you have left seat for a tank guy? I know you got back to town because you carried on past me when I turned off Papinui road.
