View Full Version : Getting cigarette smoke out of leather?
Stella

I just bought a pair of leather riding pants, second hand but in great condition and fit really nicely (and I could afford them!)
Problem is they stink of cigarette smoke. Apart from 'airing them out' at 100kmph, how can I get the smell out?
Thanks

Apart from regular airing, try putting the pants in the hot water cabinet, with a small dish of hot water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in it. Then regular air outs..:)

Mix up some armorial ( that silicon based white cleaning stuff ) with vanilla essence, not the artificial stuff, and give them a wipe over with that.
But once leather is smoke damaged - it's very hard to get ride of the smell
You could post a pic of your self in the new pants - that would help

Try leather oil available from a saddler, it may work (has its own smell but its far better than stale smoke) and keeps the leather supple as well. If they have a lining you could turn them inside out and perhaps try a mild soap/lemon essence or similar on the lining. Just an idea, its what I'd try anyway.

Try 'airing' them out at 2 or 300kph, if that doesn't work take up smoking :D

My mate got some of this and it works on anything even my stinking boots:niceone:
It's called zero odor and i think it is selling on an infomercial in nz.

There are also products in the supermarket and chemists called Nilodor and Neutrodol - both work really well. I am not sure about spraying it directly on the leather but you could perhaps spray some on a cloth and wipe it on a small area to ensure it doesn't damage them. Or spray it on the insides only. I'm currently using it to get rid of the smell on items I was left by my mother, who was a smoker. I've used it on the interior of cars with great success too.

Just try farting in them, that should beat cigarette smoke!
Actually it's bloody hard work trying to fart while wearing leathers on your bike. :( So I take that back. John.

Find someone who has recently given up smoking, and lock them up with them for a few days. They'll soon suck every last bit of smoke outta them! :niceone:
Failing that, you could wash them in warm water with wool wash ("Softly" or whatever), then dry them out of the sun, or take them to a drycleaner who does leather clothes.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
I keep seeing that it is very difficult to completely remove the smoke smell. In that case I might just stick them in a confined space with a lit stick of incense and I can smell like a happy hippie!

baking powder absorbs many odors.....is underrated, probably because it is cheap compared with over the counter "specialist" products.Try it. you'l be surprised..

Yeah, that's it!
Have a shower, and while you're still damp, sprinkle LOTS of baking powder all over yourself, then spray your leathers with hairspray, sprinkle them liberally with baking soda, then put them on. :niceone:
If you get bored, get someone to spray you with vinegar or lemon juice. :blank:

Bought another leather jacket off trademe, was owned by a smoker buggar, Gezzzz it stank, so I ran a damp cloth all over it sponged it down with some scented baby oil as it has no fats in it, then sprayed the inside with some of the wifes purfume, hung a smellie in the wardrobe, gave it a sun bath most every day, and after a week it started to come good, now it is hardly noticable...Next time if there is I shall ask if a smoker has been wearing the gear, or buy new stuff...

I once had a rabbit tale that stunk so I left it soaking in water that had lavender oil drops in it and after about 3 weeks it was passable. The cats still sniffed it out of my undies drawer tho'. Dunno about the other suggestions as how much and dry or wet i.e. baking soda but anything is worth a try. Keep riding and see when the smell leaves ya. CB

Sure to rise....
(what will rise depends on who you find to do the spraying)
But seriously if you put your leathers in something you can close off..( chilly bin or so ) and put an open container with baking powder in with it.....
The powder does actualy absorb odors!!! mind you sounds you may need 44 gallon drum with the stuff...;)

Try Kiwi Neutral shoe polish from the supermarket. I,m sure the smell of nugget will be better.

On any Sunday (pun) after a rally and the farting suggestion isn't really that difficult, and anything has to be better than ciggy pong (duck for cover).
Heh heh, many moons ago was driving the tin top one day when a mate threw a butt out the front window (tsk, tsk). It went out and back into the car through the open back window unseen.
A few miles down the road, k'nell what a stench. The fag end was burnin a bloody hole in my leather jacket which was siting on the back window shelf.

If it has a fabric lining, turn inside out and wash with mild soapy water then dry. They spray the fabric lining with Meguiars Car Odor Eliminator - brilliant stuff for eliminating odors from fabrics.
Not sure how it will work on the leather- try a test spot?
Or with the leather - wash as above - then use a good quality leather conditioner (bike shops and horse shops sell them), I think this will make a big difference plus it will soften and water proof the leather. Feels nice
Bloody dirty smokers. I dislike it when they throw their butts out the window.

True, don't see many bikers do that. I have had a number of times, low life's do it when your right behind them on the bike ... WTF.
Unfortunately it's the tobacco bit full of nasty toxins that fries the tiny brains of these people when they puff away. That causing complete disregard of others, animals, and the environment when it comes to safety from fire, disease and tidyness when they thoughtlessly toss their BUTTS!
Bikers are much nicer people.
