View Full Version : Speed cameras acting illegally

jimbo600

I noticed a few weeks ago that the LTSA insisted that speed enforcement devices had to be operated overtly and not hidden.

Well today I noticed a speed camera operating in a covert capacity. Photo's are attached. If anyone was pinged by this camera then they have a good case for redress.

He was there on Saturday when I went passed at about 3pm....it wasn't until you were right on him that you saw the bugger.
Money Money Money Money....it's all about money. What I want to know is what is happening with all that "revenue" money cause there should be shitloads of it somewhere.

Those dirty olds... Perhaps it helps explain a 7B surplus, or a 6 M hospital for the Islands! :Playnice:
Where was he anyway - just curious? Also interesting to note that he is within sight of a speed limit sign...

You'd think they'd be happy with the speed camera down Ngauranga Gorge cause I read in the paper that one is in the top 5 earning speed cameras in NZ.

Just past the Ngauranga flyover heading to Petone.

The camera was located at the bottom of the gorge between the SH1 and SH2 interchange.

bevsta
7th November 2004, 20:42
That's crazy, I suppose their claim would be "it is a red van and that is easy to see."
I noticed Yesterday as I was going up through the gorge towards J-ville that fixed camera is in the box so if you're going south on SH1 make sure you get right down to the limit as you're going down the hill.

Look at it this way- in the old days travellers had to watch for lions in the bush, now it's just speed cameras - at least they don't eat you AND you CAN avoid them, just slow down ;) :ride:

Shouldn't have to look out for them, they should be overt.

In the old days you could have shot the lion and mounted it's head on your wall as a trophy.

speed camera guy I had a chat to also told me that the camera must be visible 50 meters in either direction without obstruction.... but 50m is not that far is it? :disapint:

50m isn't that far, but is that still the guideline they have ?, cos as of april this year they started that "anywhere, anytime" campaign. Where they took down all the signs and are allowed to put the cameras anywhere..... I take it anywhere must really be anywhere ??

Never had a problem spotting them - never been snapped by them. :niceone:

IF eventually I do get snapped then BFD, I'll just pay up and NOT go moaning on the KB site about how "not fair" it is 'cos I couldn't see the 'hidden' cameras!! :crybaby:

BTW how much DO you think you should be allowed to exceed the speed limit before you DO get a ticket??

That's funny.

Yesterday, there was some wanker standing on the side of the motorway taking photos of some bushes not far from where you spotted your speed camera. I thought pedestrians weren't allowed on motorways? :shifty:

I know what you mean, anything less than a 400 film and you get too much blurring at that speed!!!!

you'd think people had better things to do with their life than loop fuck knows how far back, just to take some photos of a bright red van parked on the roadside, clearly visible for at least 50m in each direction. if you couldn't see it, you were obviously not looking. here's some advice (in no particular order). buy a radar detector. try scanning the road ahead. try slowing down. try going the scenic route. try hardening up.

Ok ok keep hold of your handbag.
I noticed the van on the way to Welly. My missus took the photo on the way back. Didn't loop to get a photo.
I usually do take the scenic route.
I wasn't speeding anyway.
There's no way it was visible from 50m.

Before you accuse me of not having a life and "looping" back try getting you shit together first eh.

So do these things get accurate readings of speed through bushes and all? I some how doubt it.

As for SD's question about how far over the speed limit before a ticket - I will reiterate my points from many threads - there should be no fixed limit so cameras shouldn't be used at all. It should be down to what is appropriate for the road and the conditions e.g. weather, traffic volumes etc. i.e. proper judgement.

I am sure Spud and other cops on this forum would agree (even if you don't SD) that it would be quite obvious to any cop watching a road to decide what is inappropriate speed for the road - on the motorway in question people travelling at a speed way in excess of the general flow, requiring constant weaving in and out of the other traffic, with many evasive actions being taken and close calls and that kind of stuff. Ah, I guess you call that dangerous driving and you can ping people for that anyway - so why the need for draconian speed laws I say? Otherwise if everyone was cruising along happily at 120 or even more following the 2 second rule guideline etc and those going slightly faster but passing courteously with correct use of indicators etc, I would say no problem.

p.s. SD you ever have any cameras down in South Otago and do you as a cop ever not know where they are? I suspect you have an unfair advantage over the other money donors.

Well according to some people (well OK, one person, actually, I'm not sure Tiggerz is all that clever so he might actually BE a Tigger?), because I learn't to drive in the 60's I'm really rather good so i should be allowed to drive as fast as I like!

ANS: While it may reek of 'fairness' to YOU just imagine how cluttered the Court system would be with 100's of 'responsible' motorists who thought their speed WAS appropriate - and given the level of intellect of a lot of 'responsible' motorists I have met at least the Court would be interesting!

[QUOTE]p.s. SD you ever have any cameras down in South Otago and do you as a cop ever not know where they are? I suspect you have an unfair advantage over the other money donors.

Virtually all of the time we do not get told of the whereabouts of camera vans or even if they are in our area - AND if one of us does get 'snapped' in a 'work' car we have to pay for it unless we can prove we were on our way to an urgent job (had the blue/red lights on or got job print-out from Comms centre).
So no, we do not have an 'unfair' advantage.

P.S.There have been times when the camera van operator has dropped in at the station so at those times we at least know they are around but not where.

So did you send the photo to the LTSA ? It would be interesting to hear the response.

Rules are rules - to be adhered to by all, including the authorities that make them.

Unless of course you believe that rules are made to be broken ;)

Shit me mate that's not far off the mark.

Sent the photos to the LTSA and they replied

"fuck off Jimbo. You are always sending us dumb shit. Slow the fuck down and you won't spend your days filling out claim forms."

I guess they're getting a bit militant these days.

I saw the "red van" today on Western Motorway in the Hutt. Caught it out the side of my eye as I went past (doing 95km/h I might add like the good citizen I am).

I would have thought that location was pretty covert so took a photo on the way back.

Rang the Infringement Bureau who advised that the vehicle must be visible at a 90 degree angle. I take it that means as you are going past. I was also told that they are not allowed to be 'camoflauged'. The pleb on the phone didn't sound too sure of these criteria, but on the face of it the camera I saw today was ok in terms of location.

taking pictures is much less subtle then shooting out there tyres ;) anyhows - id like to know where speed cameras are lurking, my mates tell me if they no im going that way. Also scrap the radar idea - get a jammer, they work better. Also dont stop (fullstop)
Do you like watching the weather report? Well shut up then cos this is our camera report. Besides there's no fun with speed cameras - no chase, no thrill - just a letter saying, do not collect $200, do not pass go, go to jail

Green van against a green vegatative backdrop and they reckon it's not camouflaged. They should paint them high vis yellow. And put flags on em, and have tied down blimps like in car yards so you can see them from km's away.

Speed camera operator would be a good job if you were a student eh. All that study time.

yes they are. they are also supposed to change the setting for trucks going past (this is a performance related issue - yes QUOTA - as the camera measures mass as well as speed).

they start too early in the morning for students to be up and about

yes it is a crap job. there are some ex-mot/sworn cops in there that are on $65k though, for doing feck all.

marty

it's a carry-over of their service. some of them are ex-mot since the 1960's! they can't be forced to retire, so they get low-impact positions. they just retain their salary. a new (non-sworn) camera operator though is on less than 1/2 that.
