View Full Version : Any KB sailors out there?

I used to race sunbursts and scout cutters back when i was younger, and learnt my way in a P Class...

Are there any KBers actively involved in sailing and or racing? I'm keen to get back into it, but im a bit big to race single handed boats, so would be looking more towards larger crewed type stuff.

If anyone in Auckland needs some balast or just some company for a weekend blast then let me know!

I just got back a couple of hours ago from cruising up to the Bay of Islands. I suspect I can find you a position (take that as you will ;))

We race Reactors - big enough to have some fun, and small enough to have some fun - you don't have to worry about being a rail-bunny like most of the crew on larger boats!

PM me for my mobile.

dude WTF are you doing with old pics of 12 year old boys? cant you find any new ones?

P.S. if i had a boat you could be my cabin boy, but you would have to change your name to Roger first.

I used to spend many, many illicit hours sailing in my yoff! I have also been known to teach kids to sail at those camps some parents send kids to so they dont have to deal with them on a day to day basis during summer holidays.

Sadly, I have not been sailing properly for the longest time.

Sailed a little bit in lasers, trapez and yngling dinghys...

Currently I'm racing as crew on a 38 footer every wednesday night during summer here in Lyttleton. Good fun, nice and relaxed!

Yup, the family have been involved in yachting for years. Folks have a photo of me in a "baby-carrying whateveryacallit" hanging from the boom of the old family boat, when I was five days old.

A yacht is on the horizon... in the forseeable future.

R6, wander down to the Richmond Yacht club at Westhaven and put a card up on the board.

I ended up going from Moths to 1 Ton Cup for six yrs that way. Richmond run the Wednesday Night Winter Series and then during the summer ther's racing/cruising every weekend.

It's the best life of all.

When I was working in Auckland I crewed on a Young 99 and a GBE on Wednesday night racing. Did the Coastal Classic on the GBE a couple of times, and the Tonga cruising race on the 99, the year of the big storm - we beat it by about 6 hours, but a few others weren't so lucky.....

The Gulf is a great place to be in the late afternoon.

As Grub said, a note on the local clubrooms works or try crew.org??? local website for all yacht racing. Pirate Jafa's offer sounds good too....

However, should you wish to get into power boating ie; Coastguard, give me a yell, we always need new meat, oops, volunteers!

Richmond yacht club do a friday night sailing for people new to it (even if you are not...good way to get asked to join in on racing). My brother takes out the olds yacht most of the time. Thats how we used to get crew for the boat.

You just need to rock on up to a yacht club, e.g. Ponsonby Cruising, and check the board for crew wanted as there's always crew wanted. Then you just need to pick what kind of class you want to race in, rum racing (no spinnakers) for the less serious, handicap, whatever. USed to do this every week when I was at Uni, but don't have the time these days.

Mom you never cease to amaze me. I was a fishery officer for many years, and we used to hire yachts and go out days on end undercover, it was a tough life. Mucked around on P-classes for a time to, I love sailing

My fav was the trusty old moth! Used to go like stink and was a very forgiving learner yacht!

My father hated all things water related and actually forbid me to go out in a boat. All my mates sailed, what can I say? Nothing but nothing beats zooming along on the water. I crewed a Junior Cherub for a guy ( I had the hugest crush on him as I recall) That is the kind where you actually harness up and stack right out off the side of the yacht. Yeeha! and then some.

Mostly I crewed on a flying Ant with my neighbour, we lived in Howick. We used to launch off Howick beach, the naughtiest thing we ever did was to sail up under the Harbour Bridge! LOL Ahhhh them were the days for sure.

Used to race Paper Tigers and Lasers at national level. It's surprising just how many bikers also fly, sail or both. Guess that on reflection, it's not really surprising as all 3 require similar skill sets.

Hahaha!! Rock on the Moth. I had a tunnel hulled ply Moth (with a wooden mast!) before I moved to a Laser. But that proved to be too light weight for me :o
I loved sailing, haven't been for a few years though. I wouldn't mind getting out on a cat or a 12 foot skiff...

Got stung by an A class at Mahia once. Was sailing along nicely til my mast split! He was yelling "Get out of the way!!" and I couldn't. So he ended up with a hull either side of the moth... me hanging on to the transom... and a little wee hole... :crybaby:

Coulda been alot worse!

You know how young guys show off in the company of a lovely girl eh?

I crewed for a bloke that used to love riding the absolute edge of stability, we usually ended up capsized...lol. We would get round the other side and stand on the centre board to right the thing, and off we would go again. I could never decide if he was trying to scare me (nice try there sweetie) or show off.

In the end I said to him stop showing off, lets just sail. Told him if he canned us out again I would not be helping right the boat. Next thing we are all over rover. Me, cute thang that I can be, sat in the sail. He is yelling at me to come round and help him. After he struggled and struggled, I did help out. We were laughing like drains at the end. Great fun!

yep, been sailing since I was very young, opti's, P's, Starling and then Fins. Fins are the shit IMO, not as quick as a cat but the best one man there is, fly on a reach !
moved on to racing Young 11 in Wellington and that was fun as well.

I used to be able to fit an Optimus - just. Did my first certificate in that then went to do the next one in the P class. All I could do was go in a straight line across the river til I crashed into the other bank. Got out turned it round and went straight back. He said "That's enough for me" and I went on to sail a Hobie til I got the Moth.

So was I (refitt crew) and spent 2 years on her sea trials and a few trip before I got drafted to F55 Waikato

As for the OP question I would just turn up at one of the clubs on club night and or over the weekends... There are a couple of yatchies down here but they find biking gets in the road... bike ride or sail...
