We have had three enquiries about this now - the rules are pretty stringent but the Chairman and Secretary of the Cliff Hanger Promotions Committee seem confident.
We won't be entertaining the idea though until someone cracks 307kph on the 'downwind' stretch first. (has to be an average of two runs in each direction)

The logistics of having runs in both directions complicates things. Were we considering doing the two-way run this time around Dean ...er I mean Deano?
James Deuce
9th January 2008, 15:01
We're all skilled motorcyclists. You could have different runs start from each end at the same time.
Mind you a closing speed of more than 600 km/hr would give me the runs.

Run up is about 2.2km - plenty long enough.
Minimum gear is as per MNZ rule for speed events - rule 8.1.4 (couldn't cut and paste it sorry)
http://www.motorcyclingnz.co.nz/
So if the person turns up on the day...and he records more than 307kmph in both directions...he will have the NZ land speed record...or he might have??
No - it will take a bit of setting up, notification to MNZ of record attempt etc - take a squizz at the rules # 18 - it's pretty stringent.
If, and I mean IF, someone breaks 307kph then we will try and facilitate a record attempt at the following meeting.
The only person close in the past 3 sprints has been Tony Sampson at 306kph.

so if I were to promise the arival of a dude on a genuwine 206 hp superbike that has gone through a speed trap on pukies backstraight at 312kmph...would that allow for a record attempt to happen...or would it still have to be on the next meeting...

You'd have to come off about 150 metres before that area to have any hope of sliding into the crowd. Otherwise it's just fenceposts and number 8 wire. Angry school Mums in 4WDs too.

Very true, the footage from some of the middle eastern countries showing the crowds parting for the cars makes you wonder how the drivers even know where they are going. Same thing with the start to the Baha 1000 for that matter.
I was just somewhat surprised to see no barrier between spectators and vehicles at a motorsport event here in cotton wool wrapped, save ourselves from ourselves, OSH-mad NZ. Personally, I'd have thought even sitting behind Jim2's fenceposts and number 8 wire would be better than nothing, just on the off chance something did go wrong. Note that I wasn't having a dig or a wind up or anything, I was just a bit curious.

I grew up on Great Barrier Island, not much OSH over there either. You learn things the old fashioned way - if you do something once and it hurts, you tend not to do it again.
Although getting hurt hasn't stopped me from getting on bikes, so maybe the theory is flawed . . .

Facilities are much better at Dalefield Road and it does tend to attract more spectators.
The road itself is not as friendly in terms of width, however that bend at the start of the East West Access Road was pretty hairy topping out in third gear.

I know this guy...a bloody top gent that has allowed me to ride a few of his bikes :2thumbsup
Paul Heard is a Tauranga based company director and owner of the MV Agusta Racing team and will be attempting to break the New Zealand land speed record on a 1000cc production bike. He has unofficially achieved 315KPH, so feels that he felt that he has potential to break the NZ record of 302KPH. This has been made possible by the help of Lindsey Beck of Bayride in Tauranga, Allan Nieper of Nationwide Accessories who provided Pirelli tyres, EBC brake pads, EK chains and AGV leathers and helmet.
The F4 has made history in the annals of sports bikes and gone on to become a legend. The R312 where "three hundred and twelve" is the ‘top’ speed, and this is achieved because the 1000cc engine has been developed with assistance from Ferrari. To go fast means, tests, hard work, sweat and winning on the track with all the sacrifices and dedication that calls for. With the F4 1000 R MV Agusta was the protagonist last season in the Superstock production series. Unlike others, it is style that adds to the MV machines lined up on the starting grid. Mere words seem hardly enough to describe the beauty and appeal of a model that leaves the competition unable to answer.
It is not just its streamlined elegant looks or prestigious name, this time it is also a record holder - 312 km/h. To win on the track you always need more speed. This is why the production MV F4 1000 R 312 now has an evolved professional suspension system. Huge 50 mm Marzocchi forks provide all the stability that an incredibly powerful bike needs.
The forks are carbonitride treated and feature 13 compression and 22 rebound settings. The Sachs monoshock absorber has double hydraulic compression settings to deal with acceleration stress. Compression settings can relate to high-speed use for tracks that have small uneven sections on the curves and for low speed handling to make shock absorption more progressive on accelerating out of a bend. The real beauty of monoshock absorbers is the fact that they offer spring preload options. To improve the gyroscopic effect of a motorbike that wants to be "Top Gun" has meant superlight forged Y- spoke aluminium Brembo wheels fitted with 190 tyres of which a full 6 inches meets the ground at the rear. It has meant Brembo brakes on the R312 with 320 mm front discs with P4/34 radial calipers. The F4 R 312 puts out over 180 CV at 12,400 rpm.
It is the result of painstaking development work on the 4 cylinder MV engine with special work done to the cylinder head. New 30 mm Del West titanium valves with reinforced springs were fitted and cams given redesigned raised profiles. Throttle bodies had their inner diameters increased from 46 to 48 mm and longer intake horns were fitted. All this provided an increase of 8 CV "sweetened” by the Magneti Marelli 5 SM Eprom Flash Memory CPU that not only manages the power output but the EBS (Engine Brake System) too. This anti-bounce system is controlled by a solenoid valve that allows the second cylinder to provide power even on deceleration with the valves closed.

Between 7 & 10 runs depending on course stoppages for locals to use the course and any technical issues that may arise with timing gear or fainting Marshals.
Keen to run the old GSX down the strip... Is it 7-10 runs for top speed attempt then 7-10 runs for 1/4 mile?
Im a little concerned that in the top speed attempt the GSX wont be able to pull out 5th gear as I've gone up one tooth on the front, so want a few attempts to try different strategies! Haha.
Also... What time should someone participating in the event be there?

Number of runs depends, If heaps of people turn up you will generally get less.
Most people go home before all the runs are done tho and leave more strip time to those who want to hang around in the hot sun.
the organisers do thier best to fit in as many runs as they can.
I have never left wanting more!

If I manage to wake up on time I will try and leave home by 8.00am. Stop for gas where most bikes do, at the caltex Rimutaka at about 8.30am. Maybe 8.31 ...8.32 ...
Assuming you are somewhere near Wgtn City DMNTD, you simply follow highway 2 and don't turn off it until Carterton which is about one hour 15 m from Wgtn. Head up H2 and stay safely out of Lower and Upper Hutt cities (rough neighbourhoods). From Caltex Rimutaka it's a fun ride over the Hill to Featherston - don't turn off at Feathers - straight on through to Carterton. The sprints are on Dalefield Rd, which is the first left as you enter Carterton.
It's going to be damn hot out there, be prepared.

Went and had a look - great weather, a slight breeze but didn't seem enough to put the riders off course (riders themselves might feel differently about that)
Only stayed for the first two sets of runs - Kawasaki 1200 was fastest up to that point with runs of 283 and 279 (IIRC) - thats 179.99 in the old money. And that is F*ckin impressive when its going past about 3-4 metres away
It was not a very wide road and I'll bet it looked a lot narrower from the cockpit at that speed. Max respect to all the riders.
Interesting aside with all the furor over exhaust noise limits - the bikes were louder - much louder - when approaching than after they had passed. Even at full throttle the exhaust noise wasn't going to bother anyone.
V twin engines sound nice.
Hopefully the promotors will be posting the full days results somewhere.
(was thinking about having a go but there was no class for ride on lawnmowers or zimmer frames)

that zx12 melted his front gard and that was on his fastest run of the day, then pulled out due to battery crapping out and it was to dam hot for me to be pushing him wearing black leathers . I now have a melted momento from the day to put on the trophy wall. Was cool fun to hold the throttle open and not get a speeding ticket, big thanks to the cliffhanger people ,big f#&k you to the dick who drove through the barriers when the bikes were running (nearly knocked a few bikes lined up and riders trying to stop him).

It sure was hot out there again - I don't know if it's worse to be exposed and frying, or in leathers and stewing.....
Yep - the new Cliff Hanger Sprint record belongs to Malcolm Breadmore, who posted 313.57 kph on his NO2 assisted 06 Hyabusa.
I will have to ask him but it sounded like the revs rose rather quicker than normal a couple of times during his run.....I wonder if the back tyre was breaking traction over any small bumps ??
Great to meet DMNTD, and the guys from Tauranga - thanks for coming down.
Nice catching up with Quasi again after a while.
As for the guy who drove through the start road block........WTF was he thinking ? Barge past 30 odd hot and bothered bikers, all with excess pent up adrenalin, just waiting for an outlet.
Those red flag poles are pretty strong eh ? He seemed pretty angry about the thwack to his pillar - lucky for him I missed the pricks head. What was he gonna do though - I turned round and half a dozen bikers were heading our way...
I have the hard copy of results in my hand - big ups to The Tazman who had not slept after a night shift, then brought his PC over to record the results and print off the certificates - show your appreciation by stopping in at Kitty O'Shea's for a cold one sometime and say g'day to Gary.
Gary will probably have the results up soon enough, but here is a few teasers.....just ask if you want any specifics, or results not mentioned.
Malcolm Breadmore - 06 GSXR 1300 - 313.57kph
Paul Heard - 07 MV Agusta 312R - 295.53kph
Warwick Stenning - 07 ZX14 - 293.00kph
Stephen Somerville - 03 ZX12R - 292.69kph

Kevin Ross - 06 ZX10 - 283.86kph
Simon Le Breton - 07 CBR1000RR - 283.44kph
Other notable KBers - (sorry OWN3D) - what was your real handle ?)
Chris Elbe - 93 ZX11 - 265.08kph
Luke Mair - 96 GSXR750 - 257.42kph (beat Drew's best speed on this bike)
Phil Snowden - 05 R6 - 257.32kph
Clive Banks - 05 Tuono - 254.48kph
Mark Dunn - 07 675 - 249.20kph

Well done Ivan and good talking to you today mate.
That has to be the fastest 125 I've ever seen too - my 8 year old definitely wants to have a go on it. Actually the 3 year old does too - you might have noticed...
Does 313 on a Hayabusa count if you use NOS?
A small random survey I did today would indicate that it doesn't matter NOS or not - if you wanted to bring a turbo busa and do 340 on one wheel it would count.
What do others think?
My picks for today:
Best looking bike - the ZRR1100 in black - Cali style, lowered, chromed. Very tasty.
Best sounding bike at full throttle - J Lo. Luke - that bike sounds great. Runner up - the '69 T120 Bonnie.
Least impressive bike - Limbimtimwim - what happened?
Most impressive bike - Ivan's RS125.
Dickhead of the day. Mr 23 second standing quarter in the White 1998 Nissan Sentra wagon. No one else came close.
Cheers to all who put their bikes and lives on the line. The family had a great time.

 Well at least I voted right - I said the outcome was obvious unless Limpy lost 30kgs and cut his wind resistance - but that big of a gap it would seem the bike needs some serious work too :crybaby:.
Ah ... it doesn't still have its 180km/hr limiter connected does it?

Warwick Stenning - 07 ZX14 - 293.00kph
This is my bro-in-law and his speed's not too bad considering the ZX14 is still limited to 186mph. Even so, that thing is freakin fast considering the only mods are the Yoshi 4-into-1 race system, PC3 and air filter.
I presume there were no '08 busas there?

Also, everybody lay off Limbo, he turned up and actually gave it a crack but had to leave mid-day, where were you guys?

The record is 307kph.
But it has to be an average of both directions.
Malcolm "only" managed 29.......something going East-West -even if it was 299, averaged in both directions it would "only" be 306kph. The road is not likely to meet the gradient requirements either.

BTW - Malcolm Breadmore has said that his best run was his last, but he ran out of NO2 just before the start line.....
I doubt that NO2 would have done him any good at all, quite the reverse in fact. It mixes with water (which hydrocarbon burning motors make lots of) to give nitrous acid, which in turn would kill a motor pretty quickly. However N2O on the other hand...............that's another matter entirely. Carries in extra oxygen. Rumoured to be performance enhancing.

Yeah, only two GSXRs I think ;) ... it def had a different look to the normal demograph. As I have mentioned before there were more of the 'hypersports bikes' than usual but perhaps is more of an indication of having two previous events this summer. The local/smaller cap bikes have done their thing already.
