Im about 6foot2 maybe even 6foot3 and around 90kgs. I'm looking to buy a 250c roadbike. Ive narrowed down my options to the hyo gt250(R) the GSX250 the Bandit250 the hornet250 ZXR250 and maybe the CBR250r.

I dont want a gutless bike and I dont want 2 look 2 big for the bike.

Can anyone offer any advice from past experience as I go looking? CHEERS

Tide has a Hyo 250 and he's a big boy. Manages to look pretty good on it too.

However, he has had a few complaints about his, so you might want to flick him a PM to ask for feedback.

What about a VTR250? Plenty of enjoyment there, I can assure you...:niceone:

Go the Hyo or a bike without a step up to the pillion seat, I'm 6'2" and almost had to sit on the pillion seat to ride my GPX.

Same as Colapop, i'm 6'4", but a tad heavier.

Hyosung works brilliantly for me.

Why limit to just the Hyo GT250R, the GT250, and the GV250 (cruiser) are all good for the taller or larger amongst us :) all three have different riding positions try em all for an hour then make your choice.

I rode a hyosung GT250. Quite big bike, not too powerful thou. It overheated at two different occasions trying to cruise at 110kph slightly uphill. The engine stopped but could be restarted 1 minute later when cooled down. Oil levels etc were all good.
I'm 175 cm, 75 kg.
Maybe that's to expect from a 250cc air cooled engine?

Im 6'2 and 140kg, and my zzr250 was fine. go for a tourer rather than a sports bike and you will get a better riding position. it all depends on how much money you want to spend too

The other bike to try that is very comparable to the Hyo is the Suzuki VL250, I have one of these bikes find it great and it has a little more top end speed vs the hyo because it is a little bit lighter.

You should try a Hornet on for size ... I have a tall mate and when he got on it the first time, he was surprised at how comfortable it was for him. Just give all the 250s you can a try and test sit ... but don't go past the Hornet!

I had a VTR250 and I'm a tad over 6 foot. Cramped my legs on longer journeys though. It's a better made bike than the Hyosung and has a stronger engine but the Hyosung is better for your stature.

Best thing is sling your leg over some bikes however the faster 250s (ZXR250, CBR250, Bandit 250) are smaller in stature (in general) and the slower ones are more comfortable (GT250R, GSX250)

That bike is fucked. Mine will 'cruise' at 130 all day (haven't tested this past about an hour on SH1. didn't go below 125 at any time), a new one should be fine. Just not that one. That bike is fucked.

Seriously however, if you're learning. You are learning right? (No one buys a 250 unless they are trying to burn money, or they're learning.) You won't need more power than a Hyo can give you. You might WANT it, but you dont NEED it. Not at 75kg. Besides, you can bling it up, and put on go fast bits and when you sell it you'll probably get what you paid for it - and you'll have learnt quite a think or two.

Also very cheap to repair, a certain Korean wholesaler is my new best friend.

Either way you go - good luck.

Ehh, the hyosung might be a big bike, but it has a very racey posture.. just because it's big doesn't mean it's good for big guys.
I had a gpx250 for my first bike, I'm 6'2 94kg-ish, I would go to Auckland -> Pauanui/Whangamata regularly and never had a problem, a short stop at Kopu and it was fine. You don't NEED a big bike to feel comfortable.

If I were to do it all again I would get the Hornet, hands down no contest. The posture is perfect for a bigger guy and the seat is well above par for long rides. The engine is understressed but can also haul ass when it needs to, even with heavy set riders on it.

Re. new ninja 250, I really doubt it would be the size of a hyosung. A ZZR maybe, solely because of its 17" rear wheel.. but it's basically a shitty version of a Ninja 650r and a hyosung GT250R is as big, if not bigger than those.

You need to sit on the bikes and feel like you love it. My partner (wannabiker) and his son both had the hyo's and had no issues with them at all. Both are 6" and found it to be the most comfortable bike for them. But it does come down to indervidual preference so you have to go try some out.

In terms of power they had no issue, took them up to Napier regularly and got really good fuel economy. As for speed, they hit 170 ok, had no issues with overtaking and responded well. We now only have one but it has done over 25 000km and has had no issues at all.

Good luck with the search, all the bikes you have mentioned are good in there own way so get out and try them and see what you like best.

Well just to add something more to this discussion, I will comment on a bandit 250.
My bandit is an awesome bike, with great power. I do find it is a bit small though so if your looking for something more comfy try one first but probably not what your after.
After riding with a mate with a cbr250rr there wasn't a lot of difference in power, maybe a couple horsepower, but the fairing makes the difference over 120k ish.
As has been said test ride a few bikes to see what you like the feel of. My bike is all good for a couple of hours in the saddle so I went for something that was a bit more fun than a hyosung or zzr etc.

Happy riding!

:oi-grr: I highly resemble that remark! And here I thought people liked to ride their steeds of freedom! (Okay, I take "riding" to a little more extreme than most) I promise to halve my "tootling" distances to only 400km ... hows that then! :innocent:

Shizen! I'm 5'11, 105kgs and the hornet does me very well as well! I pillioned zeocen on the back of my little ol'hornet and it still zootled along nicely, even in the fast lane on the moronway!

Im not as tall as you but heavier and thought I looked the part on a GT250R...but had more fun on a CBR2500RR...and felt more comfortable on the naked Bandit 250 and Hornet! (especially in the city)

The Hyo is a good bike and you'll look 'good' on it...
However you may also want to consider weighing up what you want to get out of the bike and how long you intend to or are fiscally able to keep the bike for etc...

Just my $.02

Im basically the same size as you, probably taller, and i chose to go for a GSX250, no regrets here. Hyosung 250's are also a great bike for the taller people, as are Hornet 250's.

VTR's and Bandits are simply too cramped for leg room.

So what exactly is your question? are you wanting a new bike? if you are happy witht the RG then whats the problem... I start getting a numb but on the Firestorm after a couple of hours as well. (And just done the southern scenic route into milford (just on 600ks) and then back in two days) I had a numb butt

Sheep skin can go a long way for rider comfort and a thing layer of foam rubber as well. This will raise the seat height a little though but being 6 3 it won't make a difference for you though but it can change the riding position.

Anyway my thoughts are you should take regular rest periods when riding long distances anyway

I'm 6foot and i had a zxr 250 c it was fine 4me. With the 250's make sure you set up the suspension right. My zxr was set up 4 me (bout 75kg), when my bro got on it (95 kg) it looked like he was squashing it, but hes 6ft 4' and he fitted ok, just needed the suspension tweeking, which is reasonably easy on the zxr c model.

The zxr' s also have a hell of a lot more go than the hyo's, and handle much much better! In fact the zxr's are just better than the hyo's in all capacities aside from the digital speedo the hyo has.....n thats bout it.

I'm a tad over 6' 4" with riding boots on and just about 110k all geared up. The Hyo GT250 hauls me around no problem. If your a tall learner I recommend this bike. The Hornet, Bandit and GT250R are much nicer but this is more suited to a tall rider starting out. It is a very learner friendly bike, and a tall guy doesn't look silly on it. Many may disagree with me on the next point but if you've got no riding experience I would run with the GT250 before I hopped on the GT250R. The GT250 is much more practical to learn on, with it's upright seating position. Get a second hand one and trade up to a GT250R in a couple of months once your road sense has been sorted. There are other threads about this also. Best of luck.

If your just starting out on a bike it's a totally different experience than in a cage. You have to master the handling of the bike while at the same time be much more vigilant than a cager for hazards. On a GT250R your leaning a lot further forward than the GT250. The riding position is sportier and does not lend itself anywhere as well to the upright GT250 position for being more aware of what's around you. In the first few months of riding on the road this can be critical in my opinion. I recall a Road Test of the GT250R in Kiwi Rider magazine last year, and if I remember correctly the reviewer made comments about the GT250R not being the ideal learner bike. I think it is a great bike for the price, for the looks and for a 250 but I would get my basic skills up and running on a bike offering a more upright seating position first.

About HYO fairings.

You can replace the entire bikes fairings for around 600-800 dollars with brand new ones. Of that $300 would just be in shipping. Hyo fairings are fucking cheap if you buy straight from Korea.

Just don't get a yellow one. Koreans don't do yellow (unlucky or dirty colour?) and therefore you can't get them from straight from the factory surplus dealers.
