XZT660 or NX650 or F650 Funduro?

I am looking at up-sizing my DR350, Need the extra set of pegs and i dont think the DR will be happy 2 up + luggage, :scooter:

By the title you can see what style of bike i am looking at.
In my price range i have found...

1992 NX650, 27,000km, $4995.00
1998 XTZ660, 65,000km ~ $3K
1996 BMW F650 Funduro ~ 88,000km ~ $5.5k
Probably many more out there too!

Going for the cheaper end of the bike market = less tears when i test the swimability of the bike - less rider toughness testing. :lol:

Main use is blacktop with adventure rides, gravel etc. :yes: Right bike choices or way out??

The DR is awesome off the road but i find getting big air and harder trail rides or really the ground impact issue whn i become detached from the bike is really.... getting hard on the body, so i need to de tune my ride style.

How many km is tooo many, can a bmw F650 really do 100k miles and is the XTZ really good for 100k km?? and the Honda... well its a honda and should outlast the lot :shit:

Anyone want a 1999 DR350? 7000km, 600km since FULL top end rebuild $4k.

Personly I'd go for the beemer(but only for about 4 1/2 g tops) got 2 of them, both done about the same k's as the one you found. Mine (the other 1's the missus'ss) done about 3 thousand k's in the last 4 months and hasn't missed a beat, goes alright 2 up and I find it easy to ride, down side is parts are expensive compared to a jappa and only got a 19 in. fr and 17 in. rr wheels, still looks difrent though which i like

You know that BMW hijacked the Italian Aprilia Pegaso, rebadged it and called it their own? (Funduro)
But Italian styling is a bit different....
I got mine with 17000 kms, fully serviced with new chain/tyres etc for same money you buy BMW with 88000 kms....
Same Austrian Rotax engine ,Pegaso has 5 valve head (BMW 4) Most engine parts available from BMW....
Oh., and Pegaso "only" 160 kgs ( BMW 190 I think)
I love riding mine, looks different, sounds different (a nice Thump),
They have quite a following in Europe,but not so common here....There is still one on TM,( $5000) and one on Motorcycle trader.....

Sorry you're wrong there. As you note the bikes are very similar. Same engine apart from 5 valves, same frame. The weight difference is perhaps a couple of kilos.

I had a 95 Funduro for a year and 24,000km. This included a 4400km trip around the South Island without problems. I sold it at 55,000km and was starting to experience a few niggling, but not major, issues. It was a Jap import and I don't know the history. Well maintained F650s will do 100,000 MILES. I did not find spares to be a problem, either in price or availability, compared to Japs.

You need to figure out the balance of seal vs gravel vs trail. The F650 is perhaps the least trail compatible of the three, but the best for long trips on the road. If you have more of a trail bent, consider the DR650. Much better on the road than your DR350, but not as good as the others you listed.

A lot of the Funduros around are ex-rental bikes (which speaks volumes for their reliability I guess). You may want to consider the pros and cons of this (not to mention try to find out the previous owners of the bike): Renters tend to be well maintained, but less well cared for by their riders. Mine was a former renter and at 60,000kms did burn a bit of oil. It had also been pranged and was never quite right in the front end... One of my mates has one, (also an ex-renter) which has 115,000kms on it and runs fine, although parts like the rear shock are unsurprisingly pretty well farked. He loves it so much he is exporting it to Australia. Go figure.
I got rid of mine because it tended to shake apart over rough roads, and because little things just kept breaking on it. I ended up yearning for Honda build quality... and now I have a Transalp.
Consider also that adventure bikes can have a pretty hard life (like mine) in which case 88,000kms is HEAPS, or they can be owned by sealed road pootlers in which case it is less of a big deal.

If you're looking at the likes of a Funduro it's also worth keeping an eye out for some of the bigger gear too like an R80GS, Super Tenere, Transalp, old Tigers etc as they've all got similar offroad capability to the Funduro but a bit more grunt, & sometimes good ones can be had for around the $6K mark.

As Warewolf said, different figures quoted.

Wet weight of a 94 Pegaso is 179.4kg, that of a 94 Funduro is 185.9kg. Okay, the difference is more than 2 but a lot less than 17.

If you'd read my signature, you'd see that I now have a 2006 Pegaso (and I've no idea what that weighs).

Ok, I had seen a few aprilia's on trade me but knowing nothing about them i did not look, :blink:
Looking now at the one on trademe i see bmw photo copied it quite closely indeed! Also looked at the tiger, lot of bike for $5200! There is a few more NX dominators on there now also...and I do like the transalps too.
Depending on what review you read every one of the bikes i am looking at is both the greatest and the worst bike ever built, depending on who pushed the pen and if the reviewer was a rider or a cage driver or F.O.S i guess.....

I was tossing up between BMW and KTM...WHen I finaly decided enough is enough, I buy a bike This trip off (work at sea) there were no affordable BMW' GS "s around...and a 94 Funduro with 100.000 kms for over $5000...
So when this Aprilia smiled at me, i took it home.....
It is more road oriented ( like the BMW) then the KTM, but that is fine for me, had dirtbikes for the last umpteen years, and quite keen on some softroading further afield....
Oh yes EVERY single kilo less when you do get offroad and into trouble is a major, major advantage....:bleh:
May get one of those new 800 cc BMW's one day......70 some HP and less weight then 650's

KLR was designed in the dark ages - thats why it has a carburettor. So it misses out on the EFI problems which BMWs were widely reported to be having

Never seen or heard of a DR650 with Ohlins myself.
