What is going on here?! I have elderly parents who live on the North Shore, plus sister and brother and their families. Are there more people like this lot who are targetting the defenceless? The end of the article says a few people have been detained, names suppressed (wtf is with that too?!) but it isn't obvious whether the two issues are connected.

I must say I'm a bit concerned. The last best place is slowly being dragged down by lowlife scum taking advantage of a marvellous way of life that is NZ. As ever, it's a very small minority, I'm sure, but wanton crime is bound to be encouraged to some extent, in that if they do get caught, the State appears to be pretty bloody soft on them.

Should I be worried for my family and friends safety? I'm not paranoid, normally, but this sort of thing does worry me.

Girlfriend lives on the shore, and is really frightened by all of this. I live in Mangere Bridge, which is one thing I suppose, with its proximity to South Auckland and lower socio-economic areas with all of the problems that go with that, but Milford? Jesus. The restaurant I work for in Parnell has a branch in Milford; when I've worked there I'm always happy as I get to finish early -- all the customers are pleasant mild old retirees who go to bed at 9.30pm.

She catches the bus home at night, father always picks her up from the bus-stop, despite being 21, she's that kind of girl... to hear about this really put her in a spin.

I mean, an assault or mugging is one thing, but the brutality of it was what made me pay attention. Perhaps it was just the media's spin on it, but the way they were chased with bats; and they weren't robbed either -- or part of some opposing `gang'.

I should add I lived in Takanini for 3yrs as well so I hear ya on South Auckland. We used to get the local kids hitting golf balls at our house every once in a while. I spent 15 years or so in the bays (with parents), Mairangi to be exact. I aspire to being able to afford a house back that way again. The olds are still there.
The nicer side of glenfield (it exists, near manuka, easton park parade area) is where we managed to buy our first house. It's mainly second home owners and young families around here.
Try to avoid Beachhaven and birkdale directions and also the Bentley ave way.

Women are front line troops and Police officers now. They want equality? Well if they bash a bloke they get it back.

What makes violent women immune from retaliation? Why is it OK for a woman to slap a bloke in the face or hit him with a frying pan or rolling pin on TV?

In this particular case, it's not that they bashed a woman. It's that they bashed a person. You're not worth more if you're a chick, and you're not worthy of extra consideration when a person is sentenced for bashing you. Scrub that gender bias rubbish.

I guess I just need to keep reminding my folks to be aware - I'm sure my brother and sister must do that already. They don't walk around much anymore, just down to the beach with the dog, or around the shops, but random violence can occur anywhere and I don't want them to ever be targets.
Mum was conned by a guy with a kid (!) a couple of years ago, talked his way into the house, took credit cards while she was getting him the phone, then he called back claiming to be the police and she believed him and gave out details so he could use the cards. She's 85 FFS! The only good thing was no physical harm, but still.............
It is, sadly, the way of the world, it's just taken a while longer to get to NZ, but seems like it is there with a vengeance these days, and been going that way for the last decade, I guess.
Aren't we supposed to leave a better world for our kids? I think the last generation has let us down, and the previous generations are paying for it now.

It's great to see a fairly united front from KB members on this issue. It is becoming a countrywide problem and i am sure that we have all had a gutsfull of this disguisting behaviour that is being carried out by these lowlife scum. There is No place in our society for these animals to continue living and breathing and the powers to be must take all the lawfull means available to them to remove these morons for good.
I have far more radical personal views on this but will refrain from mentioning them on here. To me, the Law and Order issues should be on the Top of our Governments agenda as many of our MP's campaigned on this but don't appear to have done anything further about it once elected. Typical i guess.
We should all be concerned about this and i for one would give full support to any campaign that attempts to address it.
Bring back our once safe streets as they used to be.
