Anyone tried it out?
Im thinking of upgrading to Leopard (http://store.apple.com/0800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/nzstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=457B32CC&fnode=home&nplm=MB427Z/A) from Tiger.
Looks great, has some brilliant features.
Main reason though I would like to be able to use Bootcamp again.. since Leopards release the Tiger version "expired" ...clever buggers!

Great, yeah I have heard the little 'niggles' but nothing major to put me off. Still heaps better than 'other' new release OS' :innocent:
Do you know of any 'fell of the back of a lorry' versions?

Apparently most successful version yet of OS X, going by purchase stats and customer satisfaction.
Watch performance, though. If your hardware is a little bit old it may struggle (or at least that's my experience when using upgraded Macs).

im running leopard on a G4 ibook. Runs fine, nice and smooth
I use linux/freebsd for pretty much everything workstation and server wise so
A) you get workspaces, which are sexy awesome
B) You get expose, which is still sexy awesome
C) You get freebsd terminal commands, directory structure, all that foolery
and D)...
It has pretty colours

Does look quite mint. Some small trick desktop apps are now starting to be Leopard only which is going to get annoying real soon. Have a Mac Mini (Dual 1.8GHz 2G RAM) so hoping it runs it ok when the time comes.

hoping to upgrade with the expensive version of Leopard fairly soon myself (comes with a free mac), just have to decide which one and why!

that might be a problem.. If you could top it up, like to a gig, then yup, it'll be fine. Don't know how you'd run anything on a meg of ram any more..

Using it at work on various machines:
Mac Mini 1.83Ghz 1GB Ram
Macbook Pro 2.2GHz 2GB Ram
New Mac pro with 8 core and 1GB RAM (will be upgraded soon)
Haven't seen any issue yet, all my old Tiger apps works well.
Definately worth the upgrade.

Oops Freudian slip - 1 GB of Ram! 1MB? Reminds me of the old days when I had an Amiga 500, got a Ram upgrade to a whopping 3MB!
And a 20MB external hard drive, damn thing cost me about a grand!
Aah, the good old days.....they were shit in computing terms...

We had a couple of issues with getting the linked ethernet running but they turned out to be the switch not the Mac.
Adobe says Freehand doesn't work. Second hand words say it does.
Very nice. Time capsule works (had to try it ;) )
Don't like Stacks.
Don't like the way it displays connected servers in the sidebar. It's better but worse.
Overall - I'm thinking of buying it for home (for the five that can run it here...)

AWwwwwww! I know it's a troll, but I can't let another urban legend survive.
Both the OSX and BSD kernels are broken into two bits called (get this) the top and the bottom. The bottom deals with hardware interrupts, scheduling etc and the top is the stuff that gets called by userland. Now, OSX has a Mach microkernel as the bottom half, and the top half was ripped from BSD. As was most of the userland (command line) stuff.
None of which has anything to do with Dan's question which related to 10.5. Which kicks arse. Whether or not it's worth the upgrade from 10.4 depends on how you feel about spending money on an OS. But it is IMHO a big improvement.

No prob if I'm getting something I need.
I'm gun shy from the system 7 days and not fixing what doesn't need to be.
I worked for an Apple Center in the 90s doing onsite support for printerys and studios.
the don't fix it if it ain't broke mentality is leftover.
I switched the virtual memory off on a working Quadra - at a badge makers once, 'here - this will speed you up even more' - and spent 5 hours on the rebuild.
I already have a backup protocol - what's better in the new one?

Mach microkernel as the bottom half, and the top half was ripped from BSD.
A microkernel wot is fairly interchangeable. See our old friends at GNU for Hurd/Mach.
So it's as near as damnit to BSD innards. The bits that aren't are fairly generic `cogs'. In a broad sense.

I love Leopard. Very nice upgrade and worth the money. Freehand works a charm, but InDesign still has issues (not hiding, not showing, occassionally quitting apparently but not on me).
I don't use a lot of the features: Spaces (I have multiple monitors so less utility for me), Time Machine (I use Retrospect), but I do like web snippets for cartoons. And one day I'll use the stationery to send an email...
Other than that, nice smooth upgrade. Oh, that's on a couple of Mac Pros BTW.

No apps for creating music... The one I use is Windows only (they are not making MacOS versions of it and there is no plans to) Not only that but I have no plans on replacing all my commercial sofware to Mac versions... ie Corel which I don't think they have a mac version I could be wrong there...
I do know that a fair bit of my software is multi platform... FileMaker9, Fireworks, Freehand, Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc

It has some seriously cheap kit available too. There's a fairly healthy community of people recording semi-seriously on Garageband - part of iLife, $110 (as is iWeb, quite possibly the worst web design package ever).
I was going to start a rant about Pro Tools but you can get it for a bargain $600 now.

Drag and drop and online in 5 minutes - you don't even have to resize the source images - all automatic - I reckon for amateur applications it's great.

I already have the PC equal... CuBase, Reason, ProTools, Audition 3, ACiD, and Sonar . However no I don't do much live recording any more (keyboards), and use midi to control iVST plugins synths. The main app I use is FL Studio (which as I said has no Mac Version nor are they plaining... and the main reason I use FL studio, is because it gives you live time free updates... :-)
Personally I don't see any advantage of converting... My PC is setup and is running smoothly for do all multimedia, video, audio and graphics, as well as database and web design, plus all the other normal user stuff
I haven't had a crash in well to tell the honest truth my main system hasn't... nor had a virus in about 10 years. the Mac doesn't do anything any other system can't do...

It has been flakey lately - idisc syncs are failing 50% of the time.
It co-incidently started being fruity about the same time as the latest OS was released.
I suspect the upgrade will fix it.
You get 10gb space and bandwidth now - I post/embed all my pics from .mac on adv and buell groups and here.
I even move big work files around on it. A printer in France is picking up a book I designed at the moment from the file sharing thingy. That all works great.

FL Studio
Hahaha I remember that program, it's a right laugh. Had a blast transcribing and re-writing some of my uni composition assignments into techno dance numbers for shits and giggles  Not really ideal for the type of `serious' music I'm into, though. I remember there was a VST plugin marketed specifically for FLStudio which had an amazing, realistic-sounding orchestral sample-set. Tried the demo, almost as good as handing the conductor the score in real life, except with no rehearsals and drop-outs playing out of tune...
BTW FL Studio runs in Linux under WINE with great success. Or at least it was a while ago. I expect Crossover for Mac would do quite well with it (being WINE-based).

I know its an old thread but meh...!!! I don't come here that often
FL Studio is a full fledged DAW and whilst I don't do a lot of direct audio recording in to it, (as stated earlier I do via midi) it can do it I have seen it do a full band... but that was some advance guru stuff... the new live feature think was how it was done... Many pros and big names are using it now. Even if they don't use it as their main DAW many other producers use it via rewire in to something like ProTools, Cubase or Ableton etc
I still use it mainly because I don't have to worry about always buying the updates as they are free...
I find the workflow easier than some of the other DAWs, (others find it confusing and difficult but meh!)
It meets all my needs...
I have my own following in the indie music world... whilst I f=could reproduce the same song in another DAW I really can't be bothered to learn another one...
It comes with its own synth maker (Flowstone) module so I can make own synths and effects VSTi's
Has too many features to mention that are on par with all the other DAW's so no issue
I have been using it since version 3.4... (dang thats 8 or 9 free upgrades so far)
Native 64 bit
Not overly expensive which means I can afford to buy other stuff and plugins
I could go on but meh!!! anyway Thats why I use it...
The wrapped version of FL Studio on the Mac has had limited success but the need to fully port it... but it is written in Delphi
I am hanging out for FL Studio Version 12 and its new features which I don't have to pay for. the upgraded mixer :gob:
It has come a long way from its humble beginning as drum sequencer... lol
