View Full Version : KB Two Wheel for Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix

OK these are one if those early morning silly ideas:crazy:
BUT
How about we (KBers) enter a bike/trolley in the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix?
There does not seem to be a spec from how many wheels the "trolly" has to have only that:
Your trolley may not have any external power sources or energy storing devices at all. The power of gravity only, absolutely no exceptions. That means no turbo’s, superchargers, NOS, old V8’s, jet engines, rocket boosters, pedal power, rubber bands or wind up devices (see http://www.redbulltrolleygrandprix.co.nz/info/requirements.html for the rest of the specs).
So I thought, hey we could remove the peds, gears, chain and sprockets of a old ten speed (I have one we could use). Put foot pegs for the rider and push rails behind the seat for the "pit crew" (rules state that "Each team shall consist of a maximum 4 pit crew and 1 driver. That is 5 Team members in total.
Pit Crew will only be allowed to push the Trolley for the first 10m. "http://www.redbulltrolleygrandprix.co.nz/info/rules.html for the rest of the rules). Make some cardboard fairings for it. Paint it KB Yellow with big KB logos on each side and enter that.
I though TS might be cazy enough to be the rider:ride:
OK tell my if I'm completely nuts:crazy: but:
it would definitely be novel
promote this site
promote bikes
have a good chance of being a winner:first:
and be a lot of fun:Punk:

anyone got an old rg frame and wheels etc lying round, they are light as, espc minus engine!

Yeah, but you'd have to glam it up quite a bit.
A standard bike frame sans engine would not raise much interest.
Of course we can't go the other way to far as we still want TS to get his (sparky) knee down on every corner :yeah:
Milky
13th November 2004, 15:29
that would be a good idea... a reasonably weighty bike frame with TS on it should go pretty quick. Be a huge amount better if it was done at night though - more sparks :)
10m of pushing by the pit crew should get a trolley up to a high speed, and the momentum from a heavier trolley will keep the speed up... hopefully...
I am up for lending a hand on the day or in building it

I just had a good look thru the terms and conditions:
10. All trolleys must comply with the following specifications and also pass the Promoters pre-race scrutineering criteria before racing commences:
• Must not exceed 1.5m width, 2.0m high and 3.0m length.
• Must not exceed 80kg dry weight (weight excluding the driver).
• Must be equipped with an adequate braking system that functions independently of the steering and acts on at least two wheels (braking with hands or feet is prohibited).
• Must be equipped with a horn or a suitable acoustic warning device.
• Any add on weights or decorative parts must be securely fixed to the trolley.
• Must not have any external power sources or energy storing devices such as batteries, motors, or rubber bungys.
• Must have a minimum of three (3) functional wheels.
• Must not have more than three sponsor’s logos. All sponsors logos must not exceed 40cm x 40cm. All beverage, alcohol and/or tobacco sponsors are prohibited;
• The Race Number plate issued to the Race Team must be prominently attached to the front of the trolley so that it’s clearly visible.

That could be quite a vibe Doug....
I'd be there for support and lots of laughs too I bet!

.....Dam, they hid that one on me:finger: OK how about a trike done Bad Boy HD stile or an inline trike to look like this idiot Yankie http://fran.nelson.geek.nz/motorbikes/wierdness/3wheelnR1.jpg
Could put the seat between the back wheel and mid wheel (where the motor would have been) and have a shorter frame:shifty: The mid wheel could be disguised by the fairings

We could just put training wheels on it  and they will actually be considered functional in that they prevent the bike from falling over when both the rider's feet are up on the pegs and the bikes not moving!
But, just using an old bike frame is'nt fair is it? I mean, don't we have to build it mainly from scratch?

.
Ok, Functional's alright we can just bolt a couple of skateboard wheels to the fairing and tell them that TS needs them as he decks it over so low :bleh:
I didn't see it say anywhere that they had to be constantly in touch with the road.

Cool,we can do one in the style of a F1 sidecar, now we just need an experienced sidecar crew to ride it :2thumbsup

Man, that would kick ass if done right! Yeah, just shove a skatebaord wheel under the fairing, should get past the rule.

I recall last year or so someone entered a bicycle with some flashing lights on it in a CHiPs-esque attempt.
It was pretty lame by memory, so maybe that's why they've got a 3 wheels minimum spec.
I reckon Kickaha's idea of a sidecar would be wicked, although they specify 1 driver and 4 pit crew.
I presume that 1 rider, 1 swinger and 3 pit crew would recieve a "Error! Does not compute!" response from the organisers.
However a pit crew member that just happens to be in leathers, forgets to let go and jumps on the back would probably make the first run before disqualification..

Why didn't I think of that:doh: A small one does not need a swinger. A guy in Tauranga had a mini sidecar powered by a grass trimmer motor. It was small enough for you to be the rider and swinger at the same time. Lots of fun:banana: :2thumbsup

Why bother building one--we could just "borrow" a bucket sidecar and dress it up Mind you guys --the thing is you dont win just by being the fastest--That would be too easy.
Its in 3 catagories ya have to win.
Fastest
Best presented trolly
Best show by the "pit crew"
A lot of the fast trolleys lost traction on the sharp right hand turn and spun out --So Im thinking tyre warmers turned up max to make the tyres super sticky.
I imagined a 4 wheeled "leaner" -- basicly 2 bicycles joined together with the rider in the middle -the dress it up with fairings and stuff.
-Um yep Im a sick puppy

How about putting a blow up doll in the sidecar? (suitably attired of course since its a family event).

Or if you want to reinforce peoples negative stereotypes about motorcyclists you could make it a blow up sheep! :niceone:

Fastest - yup, a KB team will surely win this. The rider will pass the other trolley on the outside of a blind corner, fall off and slide through the exit on their arse.
Best presented - Sounds like this might be difficult, considering the amount of gaff holding together certain KB bikes.
Best show by the pit crew - I don't think a KB pit crew would be that showy sober. But if they were drunk and given a banana, they might entertain the croud for a brief few moments.

Hahaha! sounds like a great idea!
when me and my old man saw it on the TV the other night we thought and chatted over some ideas too, you know i reckon it shouldnt be all THAT hard to do well in? should it? i was thinking a low level 2inch off the ground plank, some big diameter wheels (off MTB) with strips of rubber for tyres just about - or highly pumped up skinneys, and just an old lever type steering coloumn with hotrod wheel like i had on mine years ago, cept i only had motormower wheels and they sucked for rough chip road.
then hit the corners as fast as u can using classic apex lines yeah? -spread the wheelbase as wide as they let you so that she wont tip onto 2 wheels, which should be near impossible anyways as ideally the mass of rider etc should be below the axel of both sets of wheels.
But anyway im real real real keen on helping out on the whole idea! have a bit in the way of materials, and reckon with minds like milkys we could get some serious tech shit going!

my workmates (a bunch of engineers) thrashed this idea for a while a few months back and its definitely a great deal of fun - so long as the team actually agrees on what the concept is because there's so many ways to get down the hill you need to pick one and then just go with it.

i entered it last time, we built a stealth bomber, on wheels, painted it matt black, ..we had the same time as the winners!! but we came 7th over all (out of 90!!!) had soooooo much fun, were going to make a humby this time , but have moved, and the others have lost hart also.. family life eh?

It looked to me that the main problem was lack of traction on some of the faster karts.
I think the driver needs to be able to move around easily to load up the wheels propperly -otherwise its gonna be spin city

yes some of the carts had huge amounts of money spent on them, we had wheels from the dump, $20 tyres (60 psi) had a slite toe in (on perpose of cause!) we didn't come first i think it was 7th fasted time (same as the winners) but we finished ! the last corner was the killer .. a tight left hander, (try riding down it next time your at the musem! ) that took out all the fast ones, the wheels buckeled, they lost traction on their skinny wheels hahahaha

If TS isn't able to attend the event or ride the KB 2 wheeled contraption because of other commitments or anything, can you pretty please please put me down as the next contender????? :confused2 (that's please with a cherry on top :))
I won't let KB down, I promis!! :niceone: I am always up for showing the 4 wheelers how it's done on 2 wheels! :Punk:

Toad's Parter was looking at building a 3 wheel for this and is looking for a driver (and 3 others to push). I told him that TS are MR would be his best bet for riders (I had not thought of Frosty at that time, but he's keen as well). Best to contact Toads to see if his has got the reg for the Trolley GP and is still keen.

Just to dredge up the past here folks.... But the Red Bull Trolley GP is due to be held again next year (February). Now is the time to get your thinking caps on. There's info aplenty of different designs on the net etc.
The Porsche entry last year spent (apparently) a huge budget on their trolley and although they were the fastest - they didn't win. Regardless of whether you spend a lot or not it's a great fun event to take part in (and there's free food and booze at the end of it)
And I'll definitely be up there for it so I'll need a bed.....
P.S. I'll post some pics of last years entries when I get home.
