View Full Version : Are YOU politically correct ?

TOTO

"Political correctness (adjectivally politically correct, both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to racial, cultural, or other identity groups. Conversely, the term politically incorrect is used to refer to language or ideas that may cause offense or that are unconstrained by orthodoxy."

So Are you politically correct. Are you politically correct 100% of the time or only around certain people or about certain issues ? why are you politically correct or why Not ?

In my humble opinion (yeah right) political correctnes is for those namby panmy prats who do not have the courage of thier convictions to say what they think. They want to like in a sugar coated world where everyone has one opinion and it is a nice cute fluffy one which is complete bollox.

I hate PC as it goes against freedom of expression and speech and does not help any issue to move forward. I have found that quite a few people from ethic minorities find pc shit which is supposed not to offened them more offensive.

I am not PC at all and will never be so. I think that everyone has the right to say what they think not matter how offensive. How can we possibly change and challenge the beliefs of others if we don't know what they really think cos they daren't say anything.

Not when it comes to our iconic mountain. Was said to be renamed Mt.Egmont/Taranaki in all publications, including maps, newspapers etc.Pisses heaps of us Naki peeps, both maori and non maori(pc fuck),mind you mostly locals refer to her as the mountain, still annoys when the local daily news says Mt Taranaki. And in todays paper someone was going on about this Naki name,I think it's brilliant, gives each provence a feel good idea to them,i.e Rapa,Wangavegas,Rotovegas,Dorkland(sorry couldn't resist),next all the local icns will be deemed not pc,no carrot, trout, gumboot.Fuck the PC:Police:

On reading the definition a few times to be sure I got it, yes. I try not to offend people, (except round these pages, but who really takes this place seriously?)

Someone who is offended by what you say will generally consider anything you say with as much stock as the stuff they clean out of thier navel. And I, like most would like to think I have something to say. I may well be wrong, but atleast people will think about it before making that conclusion.

Where as I nowadays always seem to ask people about their partner/ spouse to find out they just split or are getting divorced!!

Sometimes you do have to be a little sneaky, that is how I got my Kiwi man (just don't tell him)!! I think being too blunt would have had him running for the hills:gob: He is used to it now and seems to rather appreciate it.

Asking questions is how we learn and progress so you keep asking those questions and challenging others, you never know they might actually learn something too!!

Politeness and political correctness aren't the same thing. You can avoid the use of PC terminology (which is most often identified by the use of 'excessive' gender neutral terms) without having to resort to being blunt. So if you use terms like "flight attendant" instead of Steward/Stewardess or use this new annoying habit of referring to all male and female stars of the screen as "actors" instead of actors/actresses, then you're basically being PC. Gender and race neutral terms are the most obvious terms, but I imagine there are many others.

Granted, it's not limited to linguistics, but that is a significant part of PC. There are also PC ideals, for example toeing the "eco-friendly" line just for "eco-friendly" sake. To me the differentiating factor would be the motivation; someone who has adopted "eco-friendly" after a solid education in sciences then years of experience working with the results of "non-eco-friendly" messes would, to me, have taken that stand from personal experience and rationalisation. Someone who is "eco-friendly" because the TV says everyone should be is swaying towards PC.

Well, that's my take anyway.

PC-ness has certainly been taken too far but I wonder at which point one stops using a bit of PC politeness and simply becomes rude and/or ignorant.
Example (maybe a poorly consructed one) : A group of Bikers are enjoying a cold drink at the local bar discussing the state of race relations/land claims/Maori place names/whatever when in walks a couple of Maori dudes. Does the group continue its conversation as they were, with possible racist slurrs or do they adopt a somewhat PC angle and begin to replace words like black & coon etc. with less offensive terms should one of their pigmented brothers overhear the discussion...if you carry on with the conversation unchanged are you simply a racist?
Being 100% 'non PC' can often double for being intollerant, sexist, a dangerous or inconsiderate road user, an ignorant bastard/bitch and racist etc...
A balance of sensible PC understanding (much like common sense really) and sticking up for what yer beleive has got to be better for every one than stubbornly standing firmly in one trench or the other...

Yep, I agree with that...and I think if you kept that discussion up, the bar would become a very animated one in no time! :chase::spanking:

However, all it comes down to is respect...even if you don't know the other person, reserve your judgement until you do know them.

I have no qualms speaking my mind, but will however exert a certain amount of diplomacy depending on the situation...and that is when respect for yourself and other, as well as plain common sense will come into play.

A little finesse has never hurt anyone, except for those lacking in it.

Perhaps the combined effort of several groups of liberal minorities. Liberalists, Feminists, Environmentalists, Maori activists, Human rights activists, Gay rights activists...
I think fairly soon you'd arrive at Motorcyclists being a Liberal Minority like all the other groups.
