View Full Version : Has riding made you paranoid?

I've been riding for two years now and haven't driven a cage once in that time, but now that i've gone and injured myself i've had to get mates to kart me around all day.

Strange thing is, i'm paranoid these days and absolutely cannot just sit still without flenching and grabbing on tight to the hand rail. It just freaks me out to not be in control of the driving, thinking they're driving too fast or tail gating a bit too closely or they're braking too late or whatever.. when we drove over gravel.. that was the worse.

Dunno if it's just me being cowardly, but does anyone else get this sort of thing? The driver always get offended when i'm holding on for dear life while they're rolling around at 60..

I don't think riding has made me paranoid. But why does everybody pick on Yamaha riders?

Its just you being cowardly.

No idea what the PC answer would be, so the truth has to do.

Has riding made you paranoid?

I dunno about paranoid but I reckon riding has made me a much better cage driver.

Sounds like a fairly natural reaction to being in an out of control situation straight after a trauma (the crash). People tend to move toward either fear of being out of control or fear of being in control to some degree after an accident.
Question is is this going to won you or are you going to own it?

Taking the HTFU approach will help noone. Deal with your actions and the outcomes. Look at what contributed to the crash without emotion.
Take every chance to go in the car with people you trust and talk about what you are feeling.
Either the feelings will recede or you will learn to hide it better.
If you feel that much distrust it may not be just your issue, it may well be their driving not just your perception of it.

He doesn't need all that...he just needs to get some mates who can drive.
Actually, wait for a few more years of 'being in control' to go by, then try to be a passenger. If you think now is difficult...

Hmm, yeah alright. Just me then.

Ah well, cast comes off on wednesday then back on the bike..

Couldn't think of anything particularly traumatic. Does seriously injuring yourself crashing count?

Yes, I do.

I much prefer to ride my own ride, so much so that i tend to take my bike eveywhere, then I have a great excuse not to get in the car with those perfectly safe drivers.

Think its just natural...Riding generally makes you acutely aware of your surroundings and the dangers about...You become a better driver, but a terrible passenger...I trust my wife, but hate her driving!

Ithinking they're driving too fast or tail gating a bit too closely or they're braking too late or whatever.. when we drove over gravel.. that was the worse.

but does anyone else get this sort of thing?

Yeah I've had that.
Before you learn to drive you don't know what bad driving is, so you don't know how to critique and you're always a passenger, so everyone seems to be a great driver cos they get from A to B. My only critique when I was a kid was if I got carsick. Then you get your license, and you're always the driver cos it's so fun. And you discover all the road hazards.

The first time I went back in a car with a fast driver I was shitting myself constantly. Stuff I'd do myself gave me the shits with someone else driving. I think it was because I was trying to react to the hazards but couldn't.

Takes a while to get used to being a passenger again, but I did eventually, and now I just ignore everyones shortcomings cos I know I'm not perfect either. :2thumbsup: Just did a long road trip with my brother driving. Hes only just got his restricted after 6 months on his learners!!! Now as a passenger I enjoyed not having to drive instead of feeling scared shitless. I did give him a bit of stick about his driving but mostly compliments cos it wasn't any worse than when I was on my restricted!

I reckon it's a normal reaction, just try and realise you probably drove that badly once before and you turned out all right. Realise that they don't want to crash any more than you do. Finally, think of it as a bonus, you don't have to watch the road, you can look out the window, fall asleep, relax.., someone else is doing all the hard work, and theres no point trying to help them do it.

And then you can enjoy not having to drive for once!

Well I think I know where you're coming from.
As a result of a prolonged period of time always being the one in control I now can't stand riding pillion, and often have to make a very specific effort not to be a back seat driver. I wouldn't describe myself as nervous or paranoid in the car though, but then it's never been as long as to years for me.

Mate... I know exactly what you mean! After I got cleaned up by a car people didn't understand why I was filled with 'noia over them driving around like nana's. Not sure if my off was akin to yours but I got T-Boned and woke up in hospital then spent a few days drifting, but not quite landing, on conciousness island.

Took me over a month to get used to being a passenger in a cage - now I'm sweet with it. I still hate driving 4 wheelers though....

Riding has not made me paranoid, it's made me a better driver all around (bike and cage). However, I won't ride pillion unless absolutely necessary i.e. I may be persuaded if my life is endangered be staying put. I have control issues that manifest themselves as a slight fear of flying and a deadly fear of pillion riding (my wife won't take me pillion because I move around far too much and upset the handling). I just don't like not being in control of myself or my body (probably why I've never been drunk).

Yes, riding has made me paranoid.

Not about being a passenger, but about getting a ticket. Although I'm not a good passenger.
Speeding tickets on bike: 5 (over 34 years), including 2 in the last 12 months (= 70 points).
Speeding tickets in car: 0 (zero).
