This is a serious request for information.

Have any of you had any problems with a cage driver in the Haast area?

Probably while traveling alone or in a small group.

I will post more later but I need to know of other incidents, so far I have three similar ones over the last couple of years. Cheers John.

Good luck with this John, your anger over the incident was pretty obvious when you pulled up in Fox,i tend to think that maybe he/they target guys riding on there own as prior to you there was us in a group of 3 and then the two guys on late model bmws with the time difference between us all not being that great, glad you came through it ok,meeting a lunatic on a one way bridge isnt my idea of fun.

Sounds like a front page thread to me... this would easily get lost in the fray as it ages...

Mods?

What the hell did they do? It wasn't a silver legacy was it? I had one of those scream past me at 160kph+ while they jeered out the window at me just south of Fox Glacier about 3 weeks ago.

Believe me this is pretty serious shit and if left unresolved I think some poor bloody biker is going to get killed.

Had I stayed in my legal position on the road, I most definitely would be very badly injured or dead.

At the very least my bike would have been smashed and probably unrideable.

I am waiting for our local police and a police officer friend to make enquiries of the Haast police before I decide what action I can pursue.

Meanwhile any incidents that any other KBr's have experienced in the Hawea/Haast/Fox/Franz Joseph area, mainly Haast, would be appreciated.

The power of our KB network could be of great benefit in helping to get rid of this potential threat to our lives on an otherwise beautiful piece of biker heaven.

There may already be a pattern emerging of the offending groups behaviour in the area. Cheers John.

the offending groups behaviour in the area.

So we are talking about a specific identifiable group then John?!

Glad you made it !

Care to tell the less informed what actually happened? From the looks of it it's pretty serious.

I "believe" that the drivers are locals of the area, not tourists.

I think vulnerable tourists are the target. (like lone or pairs of motorcyclists etc)

I wish I had access to *555 records, if they have such a thing.

I know of three recent incidents similar to mine. and I think I am onto another, still checking it out. Cheers John.

Are the police taking this seriously?

Did you manage to get the plate of the guy who nearly ran you down?

Gosh, this sounds really grim. I guess I have been a bit naive, but until I started reading kb I never realised there were maniacs in other vehicles who would target bikers on the road. For a while I put it down to the general road rage stuff that seems particularly present in big cities.

I hope to God I never encounter or somehow "provoke" one of these monsters on the road. I love riding, and am aware that it has a darker, dangerous side in terms of personal risk, but I hate realising that the darker side is growing due to some creeps with bad ideas/attitudes.

Best of luck sorting this out, and thanks on behalf of all of us other bikers for trying to remove a menace from our roads.

I hope you action this asap John, because if you have said it was bad then it really must be :angry2:

I hope whatever they have done (or are doing) then it doesn't result in serious harm or death

Good luck sorting them out

It does happen.
Many years ago at a NZ National Enduro at Paihatua a crazyfuck was driving up and down the road at the top of the Tararuas - aiming at the riders. If my memory serves me right he ended up breaking a guys leg. Someone may remember it a bit better than me. The rider with the broken leg was a pretty good MXer.

Good luck John with your efforts. :niceone: You will almost certainly save someone from serious injury. Or worse.

I remember you were still pretty shaken at the rally John.
You're doing the right thing pushing it, even if you didn't hear of any other incidents.
It's only through complaints that the cops can see a pattern and decide to act.

key would be description of the vehicle and plate number. Bit hard to get if you are fighting to stay alive I know.

a guy I know was knocked off a pushbike by a SUV towing a caravan a week or so back. broken collarbone, munted bike. Brakelights came on, then the guy just buggered off.

Good news is the pleece are treating it as hit and run, and they believe they know who it was.

He hopefully is in the shit majorly when they catch up. Hit and run, injury accident, leaving the scene, dangerous driving causing injury, etc etc.

good luck.

There is bugger all cellphone reception for miles around Haast, so *555 might not show up much at all. Good luck getting it sorted.

Hope you get some action on this.
Yeah, there are a lot of fools who do target riders. On my cycle I get it a lot - but the worst incident (which I might start of thread on later) was on scenic drive a few weeks ago when some kids leant of their car to actually punch me. I was on the edge of a drop too. Laugh? I nearly died. (no, I was not injured).

There was a guy killed around Haast a couple of years ago rideing an RSV1000 tuono, He was halfway onto a oneway bridge and a van drove onto the other end at 100 kph, Poor bloke didn't have a chance.

Good luck getting a result on this, John. It sounds as tho it has the potential to be really nasty.
Be careful out there, especially if you happen to be in the Haast area, folks.

You still haven't told us what happened and therefore what to be on our guard against. Are you hoping someone else will get hit to prove your point? p.t.

There is logic in withholding particulars on this issue in order to ensure any reports are accurate, without words being put in anybody's mouth, which will assist in a prosecution. Let the post run it's course, lest it results in an outcome that is not desireable. :calm:

Heading south out of Greymouth last Labour Weekend My son had a slow high side on the second road rail bridge (wet)
While we were there (fixing bike) a car load of youths came up behind two other cars giving way to vechicles at the other end of the one lane bridge.
Youths decided they weren't waiting and took off past the two cars onto the bridge:spanking: they got most of the way over. The driver of the bus at the other end must have seen what happened and wasn't having any of it, he pulled onto the bridge and made them back all the way off.

Must say it brightened up our day. lol

i hate one way bridges with a vengence, and i almost always come to a complete stop no matter who has right of way. at the very least ill slow to a crawl until i can see if the way is clear, even as far as no oncoming vehicles up the road that might not stop.

when i was down last year, i do recall a tourist bus ignored the right of way and just barreled straight on. had i not stopped, i would have been mush. cant remember where it was though... somewhere between wanaka and hokitika. [o yeh, i had right of way...]

I wish I had access to *555 records, if they have such a thing.

If the call got through, all phone calls are recorded and held for a month. (111, *555 and general query calls) In this case, it would be in the Southern Communications Call Centre.

The one lane bridges from Murchison to Haast are f@#king dangerous...considering the ammount of traffic on one of the most popular tourist roads in the country its not acceptable I reckon...in the Buller gorge ther'yd be atleast 5 frontals a year because of them, usually tourists involved.
Hope you get these buggers...
