Round 1 nationals 2008

After the Friday practice day going well I was quite confident going into qualifying. I went out for the first of the 20 minute sessions and got back into the “groove” and then set to, to set my times. My bike was jetted pretty rich but I did a 1.43.20, this was enough to put me in fifth place on the grid after this first session of two.

The next session we had put the new Dunlop tyres on, and jetted the bike a bit leaner to try and get a bit more power out of it. The only problem was that the wind had picked up quite a lot so the times were slower than the first session, I was the fastest in this session but because of the wind my times weren’t fast enough to move me up on the grid. I was happy enough with fifth position as it was the very front of the second row.

Sitting on the dummy grid waiting for our first race of the national series, I thought I’d be more nervous than I was. I was more determined than nervous.
We gridded up and the lights went out, I got quite a good start and was third going into the first corner. I passed Adam and was already up to second place. Before the end of the third lap, I was in the lead, I tried to set a fast pace at the front and I was using my pit board to see how the people behind me were going. By the seventh lap I was finding it a bit harder to concentrate out at the front and I could see from my pit board that my lead was slowly being eaten up. I had a sneaky peak behind me to see Cam Jones only a wee way behind me, this gave me the extra boost of determination that I needed to up the pace a bit. I could hear Cam’s bike behind me in some of the corners and knew he was close, so I took defensive lines where I could without compromising speed. On the last lap I rode well and stayed in front to cross the finish first!!! My fastest time was in the last lap, a 1.42.52.
I left the track very happy but also a little nervous as to how the next day would go.

We had a five minute tyre scrub session before our next two races. After the tyre scrub I realised that I had forgotten my shirt to wear under my leathers for the race, so went back to Steve’s where we were staying, to get it. On the way back there in the 100 k zone I was driving along with the window down, and there was a chicken walking across the road towards my lane. I slowed and swerved to avoid hitting it, next thing there was a loud bang and I looked down to find a dead chicken on my lap. It had flown up as I had swerved and it’d hit the window frame and then ended up on my lap with blood coming out of it. I reversed the process that had just happened (threw it back out the window) as I was rather stunned and didn’t know what else to do with it.

I arrived back at the track (with chicken blood on my pants and feathers all through my van!) with about 45 minutes until our race, enough time to get a bit of rest and hydrated.

I got another good start and was up to third place into the first corner, I stayed third until the beginning of the third lap where I passed Adam down the straight and he came back up the inside under brakes. He came in a bit fast and hit me towards the grass, in an effort not to go on the grass I stood my ground, and then let off the brakes and peeled in, in front of him. At some stage in all this Adam ended up in a tank slapper beside and slightly behind me (me knee was rubbing on his front wheel) and crashed taking my exhaust some of the way with him.

While all this was happening the two front runners were Cam and then Kirk, I noticed that since the incident at the top corner my bike sounded different and knew he’d broken my exhaust. I passed Kirk and the chase was on, to catch back up to Cam. I caught back up but was having trouble keeping up with him down the straights (broken exhausts reduce power). I was right behind Cam by lap 7 and was beginning to have a go at passing, as we exited the corner onto the front straight I got amazing drive and was coming up behind him so tried passing down the straight but as I pulled out of the slipstream he pulled away. I knew if I was going to pass it’d need to be near the end of the race because of my lack of power. I tried everywhere on the last two laps, I got right past him in the top corner but then he powered past me again approaching pothole. I couldn’t get past so finished behind him in 2nd place.

After fitting Kevin’s exhaust we were on the grid for the last time. Lights went out and I got an amazing start, and was first into the first corner. I decided it was the best time to just put my head down and go as fast as I could. I pulled a 3 second lead at the front, but while braking for the end of the straight on the 6th lap, as I blipped the throttle as I was changing down… it wasn’t responding! I turned in like normal and when I went to drive out there was nothing. After what felt like an hour it started going again, with my heart pounding and my mind thinking the worst, I knew the others wouldn’t be far behind now. I rode hard to try and open up the gap again but it was giving intermittent misses exiting corners, which was making it hard to get drive. I was still first going down the straight at the end of the 7th lap but I knew the others were right there behind me. As I braked at the end of the straight, the motor died again and Cam and Eric went honing past. Just after the apex it was away again so I chased them down again. On the second last lap I was trying to drive out of the dipper and it was dead as I slowly brought on the throttle, all of a sudden it was away again, this started spinning the back round. I saved that and kept going to finish 3rd.

As we came in, we were pulled aside to go on the podium and be interviewed for TV.

After being on the podium we pulled the bike down to find that the high tension lead had been falling out of the spark plug cap… relief that it was only that!! It’d been the most eventful race day I’ve ever had by far!! I was standing in second place in the championship.

I’d like to thank all my sponsor’s as they are all so good to me…

Round 2 nationals, Levels

We arrived at Levels on the Friday, to a drizzly sort of a day. I was in no hurry to unload because while it was wet I wasn’t going to be going out anyway.

Around lunchtime it cleared up so I got everything ready to go. I got out on the track to find my bike dying whenever I gave it full throttle. To cut a long story short, when I had the carb in bits I looked in my jet box to see all the jets sitting there (no main jet in the bike). That was my silly moment over for the weekend, nice and early.

The next and final session the bike went fine so I started getting back into the feel of things but after no time at all, it was over.

Saturday dawned a nice day and after the usual morning chores we were ready for 1st qualifying, I went out to try and set a few good laps early on but was in traffic and was having a bit of trouble with bike setup so only qualified in 7th place with a 1.12.50 for that session. Next qualifying I had my new tyres on and had made an effort to improve the bikes setup a bit. This session I had a much better series of laps and ended up qualifying in 6th place overall, which put me in the middle of the second row of the grid.

My start for the first race was quite good and I ended up about 6th exiting the first corner and the chase was on for the guys at the front, I got past Kirk and then was behind Adam. I could pass him down the straight but he would pass me back under brakes at the end of the straight. I was having a lot of handling problems with the bike including slow steering, which was getting worse as I was going faster. I remained in 5th until Gregor crashed on the last lap, I momentarily moved up to fourth but Ashley passed me in the decreasing radius. I had a go at passing him back which failed so I finished in 5th place. I was a bit gutted about the result but knew how to fix the handling problems so it was looking better for Sunday.

After making the necessary suspension adjustments it was time for tyre scrubs on Sunday morning, the bike felt much better with the changes to the suspension that I had made, so I was happy.

Race 2 saw me with another good start, advancing to fourth place by the end of the first lap. I was behind Adam again and had the same problem with getting past him as the previous race. I ended up having a quiet race apart from Ashley passing me in the decreasing radius and me getting him back at the hairpin. I followed Adam over the line to take 3rd place, the bike was now definitely handling much better and I was slowly getting the confidence to push it through the corners a bit faster. I finished the race feeling as though I could’ve gone faster, and hopeful for the next race.

Race 3 was a bit of a struggle in the first few laps as I kept getting swamped with riders as I tried to pick my way through the ones ahead. Wishing I had qualified a little better, I could see I had my work cut out for me as Levels isn’t an easy track to get past people. The first half of the race saw me in placings around 6th as I was now desperately trying to get past the other riders. On lap 5 I finally started making progress, gaining a placing per lap using my good drive out of the bottom turn to slipstream and pass the other riders down the straight. By the end of lap 8 I was up to third place but with a sizeable gap to Kenneth Jones in 2nd place. I put in some good consistent laps to try and catch Kenneth before the end of the race but I’d spent too much time getting through the traffic jam in the first half of the race, so only closed a bit on him. I finished the race in third place with a gap in front and a gap behind, I was happy enough with how the race went. I should’ve been a little more aggressive getting through the traffic but it’s always easy to sit back and say it after the race, I finished the weekend in fourth overall for the round and 2nd in the championship.

I’d like to thank all my sponsor’s, without their support none of this would be possible...

Round 3 nationals 2008.

After having a good day on the Friday. It was time for the first qualifying session on the Saturday, I went out and took it quietly for a lap and then when I went to go fast I noticed my det counter was clocking up a lot of dets (detonation). I pulled in and Kevin changed the main jet, I went back out and it wasn’t much better… so came in again. Once again went back out to find little change and now the bike felt very rich and slow at the top end.
We finished the session there and took the bike in to try to find the problem.

For the second qualifying session we had done a lot of work to the bike including fitting another new piston. I went out and the dets hadn’t really died down very much so once again I pulled in to change the jets. By now I realised (with the help of Steve) that I just needed to get a qualifying time down and sort the bike out later, I set the second best time, a 1.06.4. I was happy with this as this was by far the best I’d qualified all series.

After putting Kevins exhaust on for race one, I got the worst start ever and ended up in about 8th place on lap 1. I picked off the other riders and could see that by this stage Adam was starting to pull a bit of a gap at the front. I passed both Cam Jones and Nick Cain in the loop and the chase was on for Adam. Throughout the race I closed in on Adam and was right behind him for the last lap. I had a good plan, to get better drive out of the elbow and pass him before the line, I did that but just before I crossed the line I saw Nick Cain stick his front fairing just past mine. I didn’t know who crossed first until I looked at the timing sheet, when it was revealed that Nick won it by 0.025 of a second!!!!

After Tyre scrubs on Sunday we were sitting on the grid, I was in my 2nd spot and was hoping for a much better start to the race than the previous one. I got a reasonable start and was third into the first corner behind Kirk and Adam. I got past Kirik and chased Adam, I got past him and led for the rest of the race until the last lap. Coming into the hairpin on the last lap Adam came up the inside just before I apexed the corner. I got much better drive and was beside just a little bit ahead of him by the time we got to the braking point for the elbow. My plan was to end up just behind him through the elbow so knew I needed to brake late to stay close. Adam braked earlier than I thought so I pulled ahead, I turned into the corner and felt a little bump on the back of my bike. I went down the straight first and won the race. I came in to find Adam’s team very unhappy about what had just happened as he’d ended up falling off and re joining for 12th place. I felt a bit responsible as I assumed they knew what they were talking about, but I was sure I was well ahead into the turn. After a bit of waiting some video evidence was found revealing that I wasn’t at fault and that Adam “should’ve” conceded to avoid the collision. I believe that Adam lodged a protest, but I was cleared of any blame.

After being cleared from any blame I was feeling a lot better for the last race. I was off to another good start, and once again I was behind Adam and Kirk. I passed Adam down the straight and then I just needed to get past Kirk. I passed Kirk the next lap and I knew I had to get away at the front to hold the rest of the pack off. The very next lap Nick Cain passes me down the straight, we had an awesome race from there on. Every lap there was a passing move, but I knew that since he could slipstream past me down the straight that I’d need to be second going down the straight on the last lap. I did that and slipstreamed past him at the end of the straight, I put in a good lap but was having a bit of trouble finding grip in the slippery track. I came on to the straight first but knew there was a very good chance Nick could pass me before the line. Just as I thought I’d held him off I saw him come past just before the line, to win the race by 0.031 of a second this time. I had done all that I could but was a bit gutted to end up second.

I’d like to thank my Sponsors because they have all been very very good to me!
