View Full Version : Waitangi Day Adventure Ride (North Range Road)

Hi all
I am thinking of having a look at North Range Road on Waitangi Day (Weds 6th Feb)
Is anyone else interested?
I am not sure of the condition of the track, it has been a while since I was last over it :(
Here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=48395&highlight=range) is a post from Merv a while back
I was thinking of meeting in Woodville at say 10am and go from there, that would give riders from Wellies time to get to Woodville too :2thumbsup
May even get time for a few gravel roads around Pahiatua
Is anyone else keen for a ride :2thumbsup
Cheers Scott

I could be interested Zukin so I'm seeing if I can rustle up some others down here.

I'm keen at this stage. Have well-worn Scorpion S/Ts so this will limit the dirtability.

OK keep in touch and an eye on the weather. I'll bring the DR650SE which is still on its OEM roadie tyres anyway. North Range road is a fairly easy track and I'll not be going down any heroic tracks, just staying with gravel or seal generally.
I've sent a message out to Aslan, Re-cycled, bulabil and marks to check this thread out too.

I might be up for it. Could be on road tyres though. Can't be buggered changing tyres.

Great
I will work on a plan and post it here?
How long is it from Welly to Woodville, that will determine the start time

I'd look at one meeting point being Shell Mana at say 8am (hope I can pick up a crew of Welly/Kapiti riders) and then head directly to Woodville via Shannon and meet you at Caltex Woodville probably around 10am. Then we can start our fun riding the Wairarapa starting with North Range Road.
We could do a few gravel roads on the way down and I presume at sometime Zukin you'd peel off to head North and home while we keep going South. Maybe I take those that haven't been before up Mt Dick before we head home over the 'takas.

I was thinking on how time was going to go back via Pori Road etc :)
I will probably ride to Masterton for a quick drink before heading home :)

After doing North Range Road what route? Maybe into Pahiatua, down Makuri Gorge (Pahiatua-Pongaroa Rd) then peel off down Pori Road and through to Alfredton and then onto Masterton? Then you head back and we head to Mt Dick.
Hey seems like you've convinced me I'm coming. Who's riding up with me then? Frodo looks like you'd better be a starter at least. marks says he's definitely out - he's off South with tri boy the day after so will bunk on this one.

I am not sure how long North Range Road will take, but we can head off it it takes a little longer than expected

Ok so shall we meet at 10am at Caltex Woodville (which is on the Main Road to Palmerston North)
Then depending on time we will head for Masterton via some nice back country gravel roads

Yeah well I thought that was the plan - then to do North Range Road first. Bart is suggesting Wharite but that's off to the other side, I'd prefer to give it a miss and take in more of the roads like Pori to the South.
Looks like it will be me and Frodo from down here and Jim if he gets his lazy arse up. The other regulars aren't available.

After the north ridge road you should head out to conoor via the Makuri track. a number of ways to get there from Woddville. Then you can head back through to Makuri and Alfreton. Etc. Have a good trip.

OK who else is a starter tomorrow? - leave 8am Shell Mana - gather a few minutes beforehand. So far its me and bulabil and we pick Frodo up at Paekak on the way through. BusaJim you going up the 'rapa or will you see us at Mana too?
I don't plan on doing Makairo track on this ride but there is one already planned for Sunday http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=66455

Crap, I'm interested but can't do tomorrow as I'm on call. Maybe next time as long as the tractor/road widener would fit down the tracks.

I might try and make it tomorrow at Mana Shell.
Been up working on the Dakar since afternoon trying to track down an electrical fault finally (wire jumped off terminal inside indicator on last ride and blowing main fuse - arragh!)

Hey Guys
Hopefully one of you reads this message before you leave.
I am still up (or got up) because of a few idiots that decided that tonight was a good night to rip us off
What they didn't know was that my wife was still up, she busted them in the middle of their crime night, and chased then with one of her crutches down the road :eek5:
They didn't get away with much, but we think the Police nailed them, luckily for them....
So anyway if I am not there at 10am I have slept in, I will text you Merv as I have your number, but I should be there, I have been looking forward to this ride
Cheers Scott

OK I'm up raring to go so about to get ready. I'll wait at Mana for a wee while and see if you turn up as it looks like I'll be the only one there with BusaJim and bulabil dropping out, then we pick up Frodo on the way.

Sorry mate, I got a wasp fly into my helmet doing the Karapoti crossing a few days ago.
The little bast*rd stung the crap out of me near my eye. After spending the last two days looking like the elephant man, I woke up at 7am to find my eye so swollen shut I couldn't make it, let alone probably get my helmet on! At the time I was riding I thought the pain was pretty average and thought 'is that all you can give me you little proverbial?!' - How wrong was I!
Hope the ride was good and we get to see some pics.

Well I made it. Awesome day.
Didn't think the back tyre would hang in, so bailed after lunch. Came home the long way. Poked around in the north end of the Makairo track to see what state it's in. Will post pics later.

Anyway, posting the ride report and pics here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=66599
