91 or 96, just wanting opinions on what they think suits the harley better, have had mixed responses in the past

I honestly can't tell any diference between any of the fuels in mine. It runs fine on all of them.

I have to run 16:1 avgas and 91 for the old iron motor. other than that it will runn on anything I can find.

My old 1340 used to run on 91. I'm not sure why you'd run high octane fuel in such a low compression engine?

My XLCH has quit high compression, pings on the hills with just 91

Usually 95, sometime 98 but havent used 91..remember reading in the service manual to run highest octane you can..not sure if this is a must or just a good idea....might try 91 on the run to the rally next weekend....

I have a 2000 FLHTCI that I run 91 octane in with no problems. Anything less and it will ping.

You can get fuel with LESS than 91????

I use 96 mostly, 98 at times.

We use 91 in everything. It is the most stable and takes the longest to deteriate in the tank.

When I scored my hog the biker told me to use 95 octane as he said it has more lead in the fuel to keep the chambers coated .Then another biker further down the road told me to use one part aviation fuel mixed with 91 octane. This he told me gives better performance. Also putting lead deposits back in the chamber.AV gas is costly so now I just run 91,then maybe once a while I'll run 95 or AV just to keep my bike happy.,,,,,LTR<_<

AV gas is a waste of time unless its high compression motor, Has your engine had extensive work done on it?

Actually, never mind, If it had and you ran low octane fuel in it then it wouldn't be very healthy.

And there is no lead in 95.......

Actually the avgas comment regarding older harleys is a good one--Get some lead in there once in awhile.
Ok reread that--I mean AVgas has lead -our gpump gas doesn't -lead for Harlys longevity can be a good thing

hmmm.....can any HD mechanics vouch for the need of the odd tank of leaded gas?

I would have thought whatever additives they put in NZ fuel to lubricate the engine in replace of the lead would do the job fine, Is this not the case?

Haven't put leaded/avgas or any other additive in any of my Harleys since unleaded first came in.

Mind you, I had already fitted my iron-head with stainless steel valves and hardened seats when I did the top end re-build.
