Now firstly I want to say sorry if this has been covered already. If not yay.

I have a 2004 Hyosung GT 250. Its USD forks sometimes make very brief grinding ummm feelings/shudders under heavy breaking.:oi-grr: My mate said he heard it pulling into his driveway.

Is there any special or different type of maitenence required for USD forks??? or shuld I take it into the shop and get them to do it??? Any advice would be appreciated

I think you need to get some one who is a lot more mechanical than you to check your bike out mate

It could be coming from the brake Pads, or the brake disc, or the stearing head bearings, or the forks- Lots of things this could be:msn-wink:

PM Frosty on here mate, he is in Auckland, and I am sure he would give you a bit of time for advise on this issue

Maintanece wise, USD or conventional, they all need good service work, but nothing special different really

I don't really know, I can't imagine that they need special attention. As I ride a sportsbike, I've always thought of USD forks as the "normal" ones :)

you may be doing more damage to it by riding it.
when were the pads last changed? is the disc scored or damaged?

Yea it is, I understand what you are saying but! Mechanical failure can hurt you rather badly, so please get it checked

There are a few guys in the racing section, ( From Auckland) who I am sure you could PM, and do a deal with, to have your bike checked for safety at least!

I thought USD forks were too awesome to need maintenance?

Not wishing to generalise based on a few personal anecdotes, but the Hyo USD forks seem to blow their seals rather quickly. One which was already weeping with less than 6,000kms on it. I think many riders of these bikes don't really know about fork seals as well, so don't know what's going on and just ignore it. Have the forks got any oil left in 'em?

Good advice: listen to Shaun
Not so good advice: listen to others
Seriously bad advice: listen to skidmark

There is a bit of a clue here, if they blow seals regularly then one of the most common reasons is over-liberal fork bush clearance. Add that to the checklist, given Hyosungs abysmal quality standards it would be none too surprising.

While your around Robert whats your views on compressing bikes front forks with tiedowns. Is it good to have them compressed for long periods. If you don't have to pull them down hard like in a van is it better to leave them loose and just stabilize the bike from falling sideways?

That's a bloody good question, Garry, I've always wondered that myself.... waits for RT to answer

Its not good to leave them in a pressurised state for extended periods, especially also as it will thrust the inner tubes hard up against one side of the bushings and distort the seals ever so slightly. Not good for the springs either, especially in the ''bikes'' of mainland Asian manufacture. One of those little adaptor pieces or a nicely shaped block of wood to hold the bike up and set a compressed limit is a good call.
