View Full Version : Should the PD Section be Binned from KB

Seems to me that posts and threads getting sent to the PD site of KB seems to be the most common cause of complaint against the mods and the cause of some of the friction real or percieved here on KB.
Personaly I belive if a thread has little or no merit it will die of natural causes anyway and the moveing of a thread to PD just seems to cause friction for the mods and the thread starter.
Probly been done before but nothing wrong with re-runs

I think some arguements/posts dont die until they've been moved to PD eh?
But I guess it creates other arguements if someone doesn't like the tripe extra crispy and moved to PD.

I agree, it causes more friction than it's worth. What is useful, however, is the actual `Pointless Drivel' thread, where they can send individual posts that are ruining an otherwise decent thread.
If a thread is clearly in the wrong forum (for instance, a beer thread in the Engine maintenance forum), then move it to Rant and Rave or whatever suits.
Shit threads will die quickly enough.

That's the problem, they don't. And they take up bandwidth.

I think polls should be banned....

+1 to sending individual posts that are hijacking or ruining genuine threads being sent to PD.

No, PD has a good and useful purpose, and getting rid of it will just increase the amount of pointless drivel on the rest of KB.
There's enough random bullshit on here allready, and it's good when it goes to PD.

When will this thread end up there?
Or is that a bit incestuous?

One has nightmares and recurring facial tics imagining a the living hell of a KB world without PD.

The option for not having a PD is that threads deemed pointless would be deleted instead. It's safer to have a PD as at least the threads that are (or have turned to) shit will still be around for those who really have to go on with it.

As with many things, I would call it a necessary evil...and Hitcher's facial twitch is contagious

Spank created PD for a reason, he does not believe in sensorship... but he also felt not every member had to be subjected to some of the crap people post.

I wish more pointless posting was sent to PD... you know, just the people's posts that add nothing to a thread at all and take it off topic.

Let's do some mythbusting.
1. PD is not censorship. All posts still exist in the form created by their authors.
2. Nearly all of the material that's PDed is done so in a manner whereby the conversation can continue, if that's what people wish. Look at the Religious Ravings thread -- approx 8,000 posts in PD and (intermittently) still going strong.
3. While most threads meander around a bit at times, flagrant hijacking of threads provokes the (rightful) ire of contributors more than the occasional sobbing and foot-stamping from some thin-skinned mummy's boy who's magnificently insightful commentary has been relocated to somewhere more worthy of their world-class talent.
4. Get over it.

Some valid points for PD's continuance. Accepted.

As far as I'm concerned posts and threads are effectively deleted when moved to PD.
PD is described as a black hole in the FAQ - I think it's fairly accurate: There's an event horizon and nothing ever escapes PD after it's been sucked in.
But then again, I've before expressed my opposition towards any form of censorship whatsoever. And again I wonder why the "lock thread" tool is never used instead.

SpankMe prefers that no thread is locked, unless a good reason is supplied by the OP. Either we PD it (which is a last course of action, generally threads will only be PD'ed if the first post is PD material) or prune it.

PD is such a pretty black and blue though :(
Wasn't PD originally to stop 'meaningless' posts from adding to post count and stop people boosting their counts up? Now R&R doesn't count and PD has now become quarantine.

More, sensorship, as Joni remarked.............No comprehende?
PD is not sensorship? Without PD it would be needed, but PD alleviates any sensorhsip. As you know posts and threads are not deleted on KB, as on other sites.
SpankMe prefers that no thread is locked.Yup he alsways told me that is the last resort.

It'd be useful to make it searchable. There's a lot of good posts get thrown in there (baby out with the bathwater so to speak).
It's censorship by proxy really. "I'm not censoring it - just putting it somewhere it'll never be found".

Any moderation that involves modification or relocation of any text body is censorship.

Hey, an intelligent reply.
Please let me know what the result of this poll is so that I can ignore it.
Thanks.

Ban PD? No... just delete the posts all together.
Want to have a boo hoo? Then go find another forum site to waste your time building your postcount.
